So the way we can add some more harmonics and saturation to the sound is to use the Waveshaper, so we've got that up here, and I can go ahead and turn it on. First, I actually want to adjust our sound setting. I want something that's going to sustain a little more than this impulse, so I'm going to set Object1 to GravityStrike and adjust the Strength here, and bring down the Media Loss and the Inner Loss so that it really rings out. (music playing) Okay, there we go.
So the Waveshaper is on, and I have three different parameters. I have Input Scale, I have the Waveshaper type, and then I have Variation. The Input Scale adjusts the level going into the Waveshaper, and that's going to affect how the wave shaping responds. In the center we have the Type, so this is the type of wave shaping, and there are four different types. And then Variation parameter works differently depending on what type of wave shaping we're using. If we are using the soft saturation, tube distortion, or scream distortion, the variation is going to adjust the symmetry of the wave-shaping curve.
If you're using the Vari Drive, it's going to adjust the amount of wet and dry signal mixed in with the wave-shape signal. So let's take a look just at the soft saturation setting, and we'll adjust Input Scale and Variation, so here is the sound, and let's crank up the Input Scale. (music playing) So you can hear already it's more of a saturating, slightly distorted sound, and I'll adjust the variation so this is going to be the symmetry of the wave shaping curve. (music playing) All right, so, pretty heavy distortion to it, (music playing) and I can adjust the symmetry in the other direction. (music playing) So it really comes down to getting the right balance between the Variation and Input Scale. (music playing) So let's explore one of the other types here. So we've got Vari Drive, so this one reacts a little differently.
The Input Scale works in the same way in that it's the level going into the Waveshaper, but variation is going to functional a little differently. It's more like a wet/dry balance. So when I have this in the center, I'm just going to get the wave-shape signal. So I adjust the Input Scale, and I get more or less distortion depending on my Input Scale. And then if I adjust the variation, if I move this to a negative value-- (music playing) --what it's doing is it's reducing the wave-shape signal and it's adding in a dry signal.
(music playing) And then if I go to the right, what I've got is it's raising the wave shape level, and it's adding in a phase- inverted dry signal, so that makes the sound a little bit sharper. So again you kind to have to explore these settings and find what you like with them. The other type is Tube distortion, and so this one's a little bit heavier than the soft saturation. (music playing) And variation adjusts the symmetry of the wave shaping, and again that all works dynamically with the Input Scale.
Then last we have the Scream distortion, which is even heavier. (music playing) So it's a really crunchy distortion, and I can adjust the symmetry of that here. (music playing) So it can really change the texture, because let's hear it now with the Waveshaper off. (music playing) All right, much more of a mellow sound. So it gives you a lot of possibilities, in terms of adding harmonics and changing the tonal characteristics and giving it a little bit more oomph to the sound than without the Waveshaper. In the next video, let's explore how we can further shape the sound by cutting out frequencies with the multimode filter.
