One of the most unique modulation features in Sculpture are the two control envelopes. So we have Envelope 1 and Envelope 2 down here. These can function like a normal ADSR envelope or we can use a MIDI controller to record the shape of the envelope. Right now, I want to explore the envelope just in the normal Envelope mode. So what I'm going to do is go ahead and set up our sound. Then I'll set the Target for this envelope--so that's what our envelope is going to modulate--and then we'll set up the envelope shape.
So I'll play a note on the keyboard and I'm going to adjust the Media Loss because I want more sustain to this sound. (music playing) There we go! And I will adjust the Strength of Object 1, just so we can get a little bit more intensity. (music playing) So that sounds good. So now here we have the targets for this envelope. So I've got Target 1 and Target 2. These both apply to Envelope 1. So, I can set two destinations or two things to modulate with this envelope. So I'll go ahead and turn on Target 1 by pressing the 1 button.
Then in the Target menu, I can select what I want to modulate. So it can be Pitch, a String parameter, any of the Object parameters, the Pickup positions, and the WaveShaping parameters and also the Filter parameters. So let's modulate pitch. So here, I can adjust the amount of pitch modulation. So I'll set it to the full amount, which is 1, and I could scale that modulation using Velocity, KeyScaling, or MIDI Controller A or B, and those are assigned down in this MIDI Controller Assignments down at the bottom.
So for right now, I don't want anything to scale with amount of Pitch modulation, so I'll leave that at off. So if we take a look at our Envelope here, notice that there really isn't much going on. It's pretty empty right now, and if I click, I don't see any points or anything. So if I take a look at the mode at the bottom, I can see that there are two different modes: there's Control mode and Envelope mode. So right now, I'm in Control mode. So that means that I can use my MIDI controller and I can record the shape of the envelope or I can modulate this Pitch parameter with the controller that's assigned to this envelope.
I don't want to do that quite yet, so what I'm going to go is just turn on the normal Envelope mode. So I'm going to hit Envelope, and I'm going to turn off Control mode. So I'm going to click on Control. So now we're in Envelope mode, and you can see that we have five points. So I can adjust each of these points to shape the envelope. So I'll start with point 2 here and I can move this left or right to adjust the timing and up and down to adjust the shape of the modulation. So notice when I'm making these adjustments, there's a box to the right. So it says right now Time1: 470 milliseconds, Level1: 0.53.
So that's just giving me information on the adjustments I'm making. So if I move this to the left, you can see the Time is changing. So this time is set to 330 milliseconds. I'll set the Level all the way to 1. So what's going to happen here is when I play the note, the pitch is going to rise between this first point and the second point and then it's going to fall and be back at the original pitch. So let's hear what that sounds like. (music playing) So that's pretty straightforward.
So then I could adjust this next point here. So this fourth point is our sustain point. You can tell that by the S flag that's here. So what I'm going to do with this one is I'm going to also bring this up. So now the pitch will rise and fall and then rise and that will sustain as long, as long I'm holding the note, at this high pitch, and then when I let go, it will fall in pitch. So between the fourth and fifth point is the release stage. So let's hear that. (music playing) So now it's sustaining, and I let go, and the pitch drops.
So, one of the cool things about this envelope is that I can have either positive or negative modulation amounts. So, right now this is all positive amounts and that's why it's pitching up. We can take this third point in the middle and give it a negative amount and it will pitch down. So now what will happen is the pitch will rise up and then it will fall back to its original position, but then it will continue to fall to a negative amount, then rise back up to a positive amount, and then during the release, it'll fall back down to its original pitch.
So let's hear that. (music playing) And I let go and release and it falls in pitch. So we can do a couple of things to actually shape this envelope even further. So I can click right on the envelope itself and drag up and down and adjust the curvature. So I can make this bulge out a bit, make this next point curve in, and I can do that for each one here. If I want to see things in finer detail, I can actually zoom in and out. Right now, it's in the auto-zoom mode or zoom-to-fit.
That's why I can see this little magnifying glass here. So when I move a point, for example, and I let go, it's going to automatically zoom to fit. So, if I want to turn that off, I can just click on the magnifying glass, and now I can just zoom manually. So, if I click in the background I drag back and forth. I can zoom in or out. So now notice when I'm in zoom-to-fit-- so I'll engage it by pressing on it-- if I go ahead and click in the background and zoom in or out in any way it automatically disengages the zoom-to-fit. So, now I'm zoomed in and I can see in closer detail here and that allows me to just make finer adjustments if I want.
So we have our envelope set and it sounds pretty interesting, but what if I wanted to synchronize this to a tempo of a song? So fortunately, there's a Sync mode. So, I can press the Sync button right here, and so now our grid is switched from being in milliseconds to quarter notes, and divisions of the beat. So if I zoom out, you can see that the length of this is now 6 quarter notes or I can zoom in and I can move one of these points and you can see it's all in divisions of the beat. So in the information box, it says Time2, it's an 8th note, and it shows me the level. If I play this, it's going to be synchronized with the tempo of the song.
So as you can see, we have a lot of control with this envelope to tailor our pitch modulation. So in the next video, let's explore how we can use a MIDI controller to record the envelope shape and explore the rest of the control envelope parameters.
