In this first installment of the Foundations of Audio series, author Brian Lee White shows how to improve the sound of a mix with compressors, limiters, gates, de-essers, and other dynamic processors. The course explains the fundamentals of sound waves, and amplitude, explores common compressor controls, and shows how to eliminate unwanted noise using gates and expanders. The course also demonstrates best practices in compression and limiting in a variety of audio applications and covers sculpting the attack and decay of individual notes with transient shapers and applying frequency specific dynamics control with multiband compressors. Exercise files accompany the course and include special Get in the Mix session files.

Brian Lee White

Brian Lee White is an Oakland based producer, mixer and educator. As both an engineer and composer, Brian’s work has been experienced worldwide: on major label releases, billboard charts, network television, national ad campaigns, and in internationally acclaimed live acts. An Avid Certified Expert Instructor, Brian is co-owner and head of training at Future Rhythm, an Avid Authorized Pro School and multimedia training center located in the California Bay Area. As a founding partner of RxBx Music, and composer for Everstudio, Brian’s production work encompasses a broad range of clientele, from independent to major label artists, television and film companies, and advertising agencies. Brian also teaches in the Commercial Music Program at Ohlone College in Fremont, California.
