So let's take a look at the pickups in the EVD6. So we have two pickups: one is above the strings and we have a lower one that's beneath the strings. And we can choose our Pickup modes with these Pickup buttons in the global section. So if I press right here, you could see, I'm switching pickups. Now it's probably easier to actually select our pickup with this menu right here. So I'm going to choose the lower pickup and so the lower pickup tends to have a warmer sound. (music playing) Now if I choose the upper pickup, it usually tends to have a brighter sound. (music playing) So the next thing, I'm going to choose is the Lower+Upper Pickup.
So this is both pickups together and it usually has a very full sound. (music playing) So the last choice I have is right here. It's Lower-Upper. And so what that means is it's both pickups but they're out of phase. So this tends to be a very thin sound. (music playing) So one of the really cool features is that I can actually move the pickups' positions. So I can adjust the upper pickup position right here, so I'm moving one side of it, or I can move the other side of the upper pickup and I can adjust the lower pickup position as well.
So one way that might be easier is I can actually just click and drag. So if I click in the center, I can drag the entire pickup. (music playing) And you can hear when I play and move the pickup, we get this phasing effect, or I could just drag on one side. (music playing) And it's easy to drag in the other pickup as well. (music playing) And so I highly recommend trying the different pickup modes and moving the pickup positions around. So if we look down below, we have the Stereo Spread feature, so we can spread out the stereo image of the pickups.
So if I click on the bottom portion right here and I drag upwards with my mouse, it's going to spread out the stereo image of the pickups. (music playing) So now it sounds really wide. (music playing) So maybe I want those a little bit more towards the center, so I can click again and now drag down, and that will rein in the stereo image. So next let's take a look at the Global Voice settings. So here we can adjust the polyphony, the number of voices. So this I can set all the way up to 24 voices. Beneath that we have a fine-tuning adjustment for the entire instrument.
So I can offset the tuning of the instrument plus or minus 50 cents. So beneath that we have the pitch bend range, so I can set it up or down 2 octaves. So if I set it to 24 semitones, that means I can use my Pitch Bender-- (music playing) --and bend up 2 octaves or I can bend down-- (music playing) --2 octaves as well. In the next column, we have the Warmth parameter. So what this refers to is the amount of random deviation from equal tempered tuning. So what's going to happen is if I increase the amount of Warmth, each different note is going to be randomly offset a little bit from equal-tempered tuning.
(music playing) So I get a little bit of tuning variation between notes. So if I really increase the amount of Warmth, we can actually get it to sound almost a little bit out of tune. (music playing) Beneath that we have the Stretch parameter. And so if we increase the amount of stretch, what's going to happen is the notes are higher up on the keyboard are going to be tuned a bit sharp, so they're going to deviate from equal- tempered tuning, and notes that are lower on the keyboard are going to be tuned more flat. And beneath that we have the Pressure control.
This allows us to have pitch bend based on aftertouch. So if I increase the amount of Pressure, now if I play a note and then I push harder, I can actually bend the pitch. So I'm using the Aftertouch feature of my MIDI controller. (music playing) And so the more pressure I give it, the more pitch range you'll have. So now that we've explored how to set and adjust our Pickup positions and Global Voice settings, in the next video let's explore the Effects section.
