Video: Whitening teeth

Here we are going to discuss a common need, and that is the need to brighten or whiten teeth. All right! Well, let's go ahead and zoom in on this image. We can do so by pressing Command+Plus on a Mac--that's Ctrl+Plus on Windows--and press your Spacebar key and click to reposition the window there. Now you can see I have a pretty big brush. You can change your brush by pressing the Bracket key. Remember that one. If you want to change the feather--I will make this bigger so you can see this-- press Shift+Bracket. So Shift+Right Bracket, that is more feather. Shift+Left Bracket, and that is less feather.

Whitening teeth

Now we also want to have Auto Mask right here turned on. You can toggle that on and off by pressing the A key. So press A to turn on Auto Mask. The next thing we want to do is go to our Effect pulldown menu and here choose Teeth Whitening. You'll notice this is just a touch of exposure, also quite a bit of desaturation, and that's it. Sometimes I like to add just a little bit of contrast there, because when you brighten, you lose a little bit of dimension. Or even a little bit of clarity, just add a touch of that there.

Okay, here I press Left Bracket key, make my brush nice and small, and with this Auto Mask turned on, I can go about this pretty quickly. And that's the nice thing about teeth whitening inside of Lightroom is we can do this without a lot of effort, and also without spending a lot of time. Now one of the things we want to watch for is that we are not overdoing it. It's very easy to go too far with techniques like this. We want to keep this pretty subtle, pretty natural looking. And so here I am just painting over these teeth with this adjustment, painting in this nice whitening effect.

Now, what we need to do of course is to see the before and after. One of my favorite ways to do that is to press the Backslash key. So here we have it. There is our before and then after. I will zoom in a little bit more closely here so you can actually see this. Once again, before and then after. Now the one thing you want to keep in mind, as I mentioned, is not to overdo this. But at the same time, you may want to experiment with your control. So, for example, let's brighten this up a little bit more. Now I brightened it up pretty significantly, and it was only a little bit in regards to one point there, right? But it just went too far.

So again, you really have to find that sweet spot. You have to really find where this is going to look its best. Also just to experiment with your other controls. More or less contrast, sometimes that will look nice. Sometimes when you take out too much saturation, the teeth look gray and lifeless. Don't want to do that. Also what we are looking to do is to not overdo this, but to have this really natural look, so that they can focus in on the sparkle in the eyes and the smile and the face, and not be overly drawn to the teeth. Well, in this situation, I think we have done just that.

Once again, here it is: our before and then our after.
