In Photoshop Lightroom 3 New Features, photographer and author Chris Orwig explores the enhancements that Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 brings to each phase of the photographic workflow—from importing and editing, to exporting and publishing. This course details Lightroom 3's new importing and asset-management features and its significant improvements in the Develop module, including enhanced sharpening and noise reduction. Chris also shows how Lightroom 3 broadens output options, and shares workflow tips and advice for upgrading Lightroom 2 catalogs and working with images processed in earlier Lightroom versions. Exercise files are included with the course.
There is another great new feature with the Crop tool and it has to do with how we can quickly change the overall crop orientation. Let me explain. Well, for starters let's say that we decide to crop this image. So we press the R key to access the Crop tool. Then we now know that if we have a defined Aspect Ratio as we do here, we can simply click and drag across the image. This will then confine or limit the Aspect Ratio to whatever we've defined here, in this case, Original.
Next we can click to reposition the crop, and then double-click inside of that area to apply the crop. Here with this photograph let's say we kind of like this portrait orientation, but also it would be interesting to see how this would look in a landscape orientation. Well, to change this, all we need to do is to reactivate the Crop tool. We can do so by pressing the R key. The next step is going to be to press the X key and with the crop active, you can press the X key and it will flip the orientation of the crop.
What's interesting about this is let's say, for example, we have this extended really far here. So you can see that it's much taller than it's possible to be wide. Well, if I press the X key, it's going to extend that as far as it can based on the image. Next what we can do is simply reposition or we can change the crop and we can do all the things that we like to do with cropping. Perhaps change the overall perspective there by tilting it a bit, and then press Enter or Return, and we have a completely different image. So the new feature here just to reiterate is the ability to change the crop orientation really quickly simply by pressing the X key.
