In Photoshop Lightroom 3 New Features, photographer and author Chris Orwig explores the enhancements that Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 brings to each phase of the photographic workflow—from importing and editing, to exporting and publishing. This course details Lightroom 3's new importing and asset-management features and its significant improvements in the Develop module, including enhanced sharpening and noise reduction. Chris also shows how Lightroom 3 broadens output options, and shares workflow tips and advice for upgrading Lightroom 2 catalogs and working with images processed in earlier Lightroom versions. Exercise files are included with the course.
So far, as we've examined using the Publish Services, we've taken a look at how we can publish our files internally to hard drive or externally to Flickr. For the most part we've said, okay, well, how can I then add these files manually and we've clicked-and- dragged them to our particular set. Well, we can take things even a little bit farther. What we're going to do here is click on this plus icon, and when I do that you'll notice I've a number of different options. Here are the different publishing connections that I've set up. Here's the one for my parents, another Desktop one, my Flickr account and so on. One of the things that I can do with this: to the hard drive, I can create what's called a Smart Folder.
Now, that's equivalent for my Flickr one as a Smart Photo Set. What Smart Folders or Smart Photo Sets are is exactly like what Smart Collections are. Let me show you what I mean. So, I'm going to create a Publish Smart Folder. This is going to be a part of this parent's connection here. I'm going to say, "you know what, give me all the files that have at least a 1-star rating." So, I'm going to name this 1 Star. I'm going to do this just to keep things simple. You don't have to name it 1 Star. You can name it whatever you want. Well, I'm going to match this particular rule. Now, keep in mind, there are a ton of rules that you can use here and you can see all of the different options.
In this case, again, just for illustration we'll include the 1-star rating. Well, I'll go ahead and create this. Well, now what it's going to do is it's going to give me a folder where I have these images that have a 1-star rating. Well, that's pretty handy. Let's say that the 1-star rating for me equalsyeah, this image is a keeper, and this is a keeper for a particular client or something along those lines, and I go back to another folder. I'm in this folder and I say, "you know what, yeah, this image should get 1-star." So, when I add a star to this, you'll notice that this particular folder has been updated.
So, I'm going to go ahead and add a few more star ratings there. When I go back to this folder or this set, you'll notice that those images have now been included in the mix. So, these photo sets are really dynamic and again it's identical if we do this for this Flickr account here. I'll do the 1-star rating, and I'll just name this one 1 Star as well just to keep things consistent, and hit Create. Down below you'll see that it's including those particular photos. Now, if you ever want to remove one of these, well, pretty easy.
Right-click or Ctrl+Click, and we can choose Delete. Now, you don't have to worry about deleting, because it's just going to delete the collection. It's not going to delete the images. The images still exist and we can see that if we go over here. All these images are still here. I'll right-click or Ctrl+Click, and I'm going to choose Delete there as well. That's just a nice way to clean things up when you're working with your Publish Services. Now, the last thing that I want to highlight here in regards to Publish Services is that if you want to find more icons, the last thing that I want to highlight here, is that if you want to minimize this interface a little bit, you can show or hide those icons.
So, if I show them, I'm not going to see the little Flickr logo or the harddrive icon. Although in my own workflow I tend to leave that on, because it's a nice visual to keep me tuned into what I'm uploading to. Then finally if you click on the plus icon, you can go down to the bottom option where it says Find More Plug-ins Online. This will take you to a location where you can discover some more plug-ins that will even extend the functionality of Lightroom even further.
