In Photoshop Lightroom 3 New Features, photographer and author Chris Orwig explores the enhancements that Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 brings to each phase of the photographic workflow—from importing and editing, to exporting and publishing. This course details Lightroom 3's new importing and asset-management features and its significant improvements in the Develop module, including enhanced sharpening and noise reduction. Chris also shows how Lightroom 3 broadens output options, and shares workflow tips and advice for upgrading Lightroom 2 catalogs and working with images processed in earlier Lightroom versions. Exercise files are included with the course.
While we have previously talked about the crop presets and overlays, the Crop tool itself has gotten a bit better inside of Lightroom 3. Let's go ahead and navigate to the Crop tool. The shortcut is the R key. So go ahead and press the R key. Well, this takes us to the Crop tool in the Develop module. Now one of the things that you notice here is that this image has been cropped pretty significantly. A lot of the image has been removed there or has been cropped out in order to change the overall composition.
Let's go ahead and reset the crop. We can do that a few different ways. The first way that we can do this is simply by clicking on the Reset button and of course here's a shortcut for resetting the crop. On a Mac, that would be Option+ Command+R. On a PC, the same shortcut is Alt+Ctr+R. So let's go ahead and reset that crop. Well now we can see the image as it was captured. Now, one of the things that we can do, which is new to Lightroom 3, is create a crop in a unique way.
Currently, my Aspect Ratio is locked down. What I can do is I can click and drag over the image and it's going to give me a crop at the exact Aspect Ratio that I've dialed in here, and I can reposition that and then take advantage of all and the rest of the crop functionality. So the ability to click and drag is brand new to Lightroom 3. Well, let's go ahead and reset this. Another thing that we can do here is unlock this ratio and then in that case, we can just create a free-form crop. It isn't confined to any Aspect Ratio.
Although typically I find it works best to have this locked down because typically I want to keep the same Aspect Ratio when I am creating this particular new crop. Once we're ready to apply the crop, we can either double-click inside of the crop area, press Enter or Return, or simply click the Done button.
