In Photoshop Lightroom 3 Advanced Techniques, photographer Chris Orwig shows how to master the subtleties of Lightroom 3 and maximize its efficiency. The course begins with an in-depth exploration of Lightroom catalogs to keep track of photos, collections, keywords, stacks, and more. Along the way, Chris shows how to integrate Bridge and Photoshop in the Lightroom workflow and shares advanced techniques, including image editing with the adjustment brush, automating actions, using plug-ins and extensions, exporting to email or an FTP server, and more. Exercise files are included with the course.
Now that we've talked a little bit about working in the Print module and about creating our own layout style and then saving that as a preset, what I want to do next is talk about how we can import other presets from external locations, and also export, or share, our own presets. One of the things that you can do is if you find a good layout preset--either something that your friend has created or something you found online--you can then copy that say to your Desktop or to a particular folder, and then in Lightroom navigate to the Print module.
Click on the User Templates here and then right-click or Ctrl+Click and choose Import. And here, what we'll do is we'll navigate to try to find a template to import. I've included one just for fun in the Exercise Files folder. You can select it here, and then go ahead and click Import. Now, what that will do is it will bring in that template. Here you can see it's co-demo-1. And then to use it, or to take advantage of this, just simply drag and drop. You can change the images up, as we've done before. In this case, I'm just going to go ahead and try to bring in some photographs to create a bit of a nice color here, and to have this colorful layout grid.
Now, the great thing about working with layouts like this is that you can completely change these. Many times, this will be just a starting point. For example, let's say that you don't like the width of the border, well you could go ahead and increase that. You could make that bigger, or you could make that a little bit smaller as well. So again, you can customize all of the different options that you have inside of your panels on the right-hand side. You can also simply click on a grid, and then delete it, get rid of it, if you want to do something different. So again, think of these as starting points. And this is a great way to begin to use other people's layout styles.
It's also a great opportunity for you to share some of your own. For example, let's say that you've created one, and you want to share it with a friend. Well, all that you need to do is to go over to your User Templates and then right-click or Ctrl+Click and choose Show in Finder or Explorer. Now, here you can find that little template file. What we could do with these template files is we could select them, and then if you go ahead and copy them, you could copy and paste them to another location. In this case, I've just copied them to the Desktop here, and I could e-mail these to someone else, or I could copy them on a hard-drive, or I could post them on my blog, so other people could download these and then take advantage of these different custom user templates, so that it could ultimately expedite and speed up their overall printing workflow.
