Video: Getting started with Lightroom

I wanted to take a moment to introduce you to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. Lightroom is a software application designed from the ground up as a comprehensive tool for photographers. Lightroom enables you to organize, optimize, and share your images with tremendous flexibility and control. Once you get comfortable working with Lightroom, I think you'll find it enables you to work more efficiently so you can spend more time taking pictures and less time working with those photos on the computer. Let's take a very basic look at some of the key ways you can work with Lightroom.

Getting started with Lightroom

I wanted to take a moment to introduce you to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. Lightroom is a software application designed from the ground up as a comprehensive tool for photographers. Lightroom enables you to organize, optimize, and share your images with tremendous flexibility and control. Once you get comfortable working with Lightroom, I think you'll find it enables you to work more efficiently so you can spend more time taking pictures and less time working with those photos on the computer. Let's take a very basic look at some of the key ways you can work with Lightroom.

We'll start off in the Library Module. And here, we can select which images we want to view, scroll through and review those images, and ultimately identify which images are our favorites, and which ones we'd like to work with for a particular project. Once you find an image that you're happy with, you can then switch to the Develop Module to optimize the appearance of that photo. You can fine tune the Color, adjust the Exposure, you can apply a variety of different adjustments, including some rather sophisticated and advanced adjustments.

When you have some images that you're happy with, you can share those images in a variety of ways. That includes making photo books that you can produce as PDFs or print out. You can create slideshows that you can share directly, for example, with a digital projector among your friends. Or, export as a video to share in other ways such as posting online. You can also print your images either as a contact sheet or as a group of images or even just one image on a page. And you can also create Web Galleries to feature your images on a website. Of course, this is just a very basic overview of some of the things you're able to accomplish with Lightroom.

It's even possible to view your images on a map so that you can see exactly where you captured particular images. Markers for the images are shown on the map, and you can also identify where a particular image was taken very, very easily. For example, double-clicking on one of the images, I can then Zoom In to see on the map exactly where that photo was taken. I've obviously just given you a very high level overview of what Lightroom is capable of. As you get more and more familiar with what Lightroom can do for you, I think you'll find the you're able to find just the image you need when you need it, and you're easily able to share those images with others.
