You'll also find that there will be certain situations where you're going to need to remove specific colors and we can do that with HSL, and what I want to do here is take a look at a couple of different images where we're going to desaturate specific colors. The first image is this portrait of David Duchemin. Great guy, really strong photographer. You can find it in the neon folder here, and let's go to the Develop module by pressing the D key. Next, let's open up our HSL panel. If yours isn't open, simply click on the triangle icon.
All right, well in certain situations what can happen is that we can have different types of colors in our photographs, either from color temperature or from something in the environment. Like here I have this blue in the background. If I want to remove that, it's really simple. Click on the Target Adjustment tool and then simply click and drag down. What this can do for us is that it can expand the way we think about our photographs and in other situations, the color in the background may be something that's wrong and we didn't correct that color.
Well again, we can do that really easily by simply working with our Saturation here. All right, well let's take a look at one more situation. We'll press the G key to navigate to the Library module. Once there, click on the people folder. We're going to select this file here, which is titled fashion. Double-clicking the image opens it up in the Loupe View mode. Well, now let's go to the Develop module. Press the D key. Well, here let's say that what we want to do is we want to bring the focus to the dress.
We know how this works, right? It's going to be really simple. All we need to do is to remove the colors except for the color in the dress, and once we've done that we have this particular effect, and at this point we can increase the Saturation if we want to or the Brightness if we want to, and we can come up with some really interesting and creative results. Now other times we may use these types of desaturation techniques in order to be able to make a selection of something. Let me show you what I mean. I'll hold down the Option key on a Mac, Alt key on a PC, and then I'll reset my Saturation and Luminance.
So in certain situations it can be helpful to grab our Target Adjustment tool and desaturate what we have in our photograph. And basically what I'm going to do is go through and I'm going to desaturate everything but the blue background. And so I'll go ahead and drag my sliders down so we can see how that will work. And what I've done here is I've just left this blue in the background, and we can see that it's a pretty prominent blue. I can change that blue to different colors if I drag the correct slider there. There we go.
And so now I have this green background, and we can see I'm modifying that by swinging my Hue control there. Down in Luminance what I can do is I can darken the background or I can also brighten it up, and sometimes what we can do is we can make adjustments like this and then bring this image into Photoshop and use this to be able to extract an image from a background. So by desaturating or taking color out, it can help us target different areas of our photographs that we want to then work on in further detail in Photoshop.
All right, well in closing, as you can see, there are a handful of different scenarios where we can start to use the Saturation and the other HSL controls, in order to come up with some pretty interesting results.
