Custom grid layouts

Video: Custom grid layouts

One of the great new features inside of Lightroom 3 that photographers are really excited about is located in the Print module. In the Print module, we have a new layout style. It's called Custom Package. And while a lot of attention has been given to Custom Package, what I want to do here is just help you begin to think about how you can work more effectively with Custom Package. Now if you are unfamiliar with this layout style, what it is is a layout style that gives you a lot of flexibility. Here you can see in one of the pre-installed presets I have Custom Overlap x3 Border selected here.

Custom grid layouts

One of the great new features inside of Lightroom 3 that photographers are really excited about is located in the Print module. In the Print module, we have a new layout style. It's called Custom Package. And while a lot of attention has been given to Custom Package, what I want to do here is just help you begin to think about how you can work more effectively with Custom Package. Now if you are unfamiliar with this layout style, what it is is a layout style that gives you a lot of flexibility. Here you can see in one of the pre-installed presets I have Custom Overlap x3 Border selected here.

So this is my layout style. To add images to this, all that I need to do is simply drag and drop, and voila! I now have this layout. Now the great thing though about this type of layout style, if there's a cell that you don't like, we'll click on it, and then press the Delete key. Or if there's a cell position that you want to change, you can go ahead and do that. I am going to turn on my Grid snap, so that these snap to the grid, and then I'll bring this one over as well. All right. Well, so far, so good. I now have these little cells brought in here, and I am going try to make these little bit closer together.

What about going deeper? Well, if ever you have a cell size that you want to replicate, simply hold down Option on a Mac--Alt on Windows--and then click on it and drag. And here you can see I now have that cell copied over there. And the great thing about this is we can continually move these until we get them in the right position, and until we get this layout to look exactly as we want it. If you want to change images, that's easy; simply click on an image, drag and drop, and now you have a new photo in that particular spot for this layout.

All right, well, let's say you want to add a new cell completely. If you want to create a new cell, the easiest way to do it--at least in my opinion--is to simply click and drag to add that cell and then go ahead and change the dimensions, get it to an exact spot where you want it, and voila! You now have this new layout. Well, let's say that there are particular types of layouts that you like, like this one here. Let's say that this is something that's kind of interesting to you, and you want to save this out. Well, before I save it out, I want to add my logo.

So I will go down to my Identity Plate, I will turn that on. And then I may just go into edit this, and I'll go ahead and type out "Chris Orwig Photography", and then I will highlight the text and change it to anything else than Zapfino, because that font is just horrible. I think they chose that font so it would force you to make a change here. All right, well, anyway, I am just going to reposition this down below, and let's say we have this little layout. Now I am not saying this is the best layout in the world, but rather, I am trying to illustrate how you can start to work with this type of a layout.

Well, the thing that you might want to do at this juncture is to save this as a preset. To do so, what we are going to do is close Lightroom Templates, so that we can focus in on U ser Templates. Here, I will click on the plus icon, and I will go ahead and name this one, let's say "chris_orwig_demo," and then click Create. Well, now here, I have this template, and when I roll over this template, you can see the layout. It highlights that up there for me in the Preview panel, and I can take advantage of this in some pretty interesting ways.

All right. Well, so far so good, most of us have probably seen this. What I want to do next is dig a bit deeper, and I want to talk about how we can start to work with templates in perhaps an even more effective way, in regards to sharing templates, and also in regards to importing external templates, and I want to talk about that in the next movie.
