Many types of websites can be built and maintained more easily using a content management system (CMS). A CMS provides a web-based interface for creating and organizing content. The content is stored in a database, then consistently presented according to a set of templates and preferences, which eliminates the need to handcraft each page in HTML. Joomla! is a popular, easy-to-use, open-source CMS built in PHP. It has near-limitless functionality, thanks to its community of extension developers. In Joomla! 1.5 Essential Training, Joseph LeBlanc uses Joomla! to build a small-business website from scratch with no programming at all, from installation to launch. He demonstrates how to create and organize content; add menus, sidebars, and other features; change the look with templates; install plug-ins and extensions; and much more. Exercise files accompany the course.
The Media Manager in Joomla allows you to add and organize images and other assets. In this video, we will upload some images and create a folder. Let's go to Media Manager now. Scroll down. You may recognize this interface from a previous video. That's because Joomla's article editing screen uses this same interface for adding images to your articles. Let's start using Media Manager. We have an image on our hard drive that we'd like to upload to use on our Joomla site.
So let's click Browse Files. We're going to select the blueberries and click Select. Now are going to click Start Upload. The upload is now complete, and now blueberries are available for us to use. Media Manager is not just limited to images. You can also upload other assets as well. For instance we have a Word document that we'd like to upload to the site.
Let's click Browse Files again, click Select. Then click Start Upload. As you upload files to the site, they appear beneath these boxes. If you don't want to see the list of these files anymore, click Clear Completed. We can also use Media Manager to create folders. Let's create a folder for images of our Seasonal Specialties.
Click Create Folder once you've entered the name. There are two ways we can get into this folder. We can click on it or we can navigate using the tree. Let's click the tree item. The one item that we see in the folder is actually navigation to get us back to the parent folder. Let's click Specialties again to get back into that folder. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen. Let's add a picture of one of our Seasonal Specialties.
Click Browse Files, and then select a picture. Click Select then click Start Upload. Now we have a picture of our delicious crab salad sandwich. Let's go back up a level. We can also delete assets and images for Media Manager. To delete an asset or an image, simply click the X.
Now that document is gone. The Media Manager allows you to add images and other assets to your site. Your assets can be sorted into folders, which you can also create through Media Manager.
