Now that we have got our menus in place and they are all styled, let's move on to some of the other elements of our webpage. One of the things you may have noticed about this site is the breadcrumbs right above the word Products on this particular page. The breadcrumb consists of a link to the home page followed by an arrow, followed by the name of the page that we are on, in this particular case. If we go further into the site say, Hot Chocolate and let's go into the Caramel Truffle page, the breadcrumb gets much longer. So we have gone from Home, to Products, to Hot Chocolate, to Caramel Truffle.
Breadcrumbs are a great usability tool because I have an easy and clear way to get back to a level or two above where I am currently. Joomla! makes these really easy to add to your site as well. The breadcrumb looks a little bit big though and it is also smashed right into the title of this webpage. So I would like to add a little bit of styling to this. So I am going to open up CSS > Edit CSS and I am going to go to the default tab. I am going to scroll on down to the content area of my style sheet and I am going to add my breadcrumb styles within this area.
Let's take a look at the HTML that makes up our breadcrumb. So if we scroll down to the content for this webpage, just above that you will see that we have a div id of content, a div class of moduletable and then we have a series of span tags, links and images. Span with a class of breadcrumbs and pathway. A link for the home page followed by an image called arrow.png. Arrow.png is located in M_images which is in the Images folder in our website ChocolateBliss.
We are going to replace this arrow later in this video. The arrow right now is orange, as you can see here and it doesn't really go with the rest of this website. So I am going to replace it with a pink arrow a little bit later on. But first let's worry about styling the text of this webpage. Rather than worrying with the spans or the links here, I am just going to style div class, moduletable. Because this is the only module table that's going to appear within content. So I am going to add a content, div. moduletable and what I would like to do is make the font size first of all, a little bit smaller. Now I would like to give a little bit more breathing room between the bottom of the breadcrumbs and the top of the title. So I am going to add some padding on the bottom. Let's try 2 ems. That looks much better.
Now I am going to copy and paste all of my CSS into the Joomla! style sheet. Ctrl+A or Command+A, Ctrl+C or Command+C, to copy the style sheet. In the Template Manager, we will go to Inside, Edit, Edit CSS, default, Edit and once again Ctrl+A or Command+A, Ctrl+V or Command+V to paste in all of that CSS and Save. And when we refresh our webpage, you will see that our breadcrumbs are looking much better. Now I would like to replace that arrow. In advance of this video, I downloaded this arrow to Fireworks and I recolored it with the same pink that's used elsewhere on the website and saved it out as a file of the same name arrow.png. Now I am going to copy that arrow.png file into the Joomla! website.
So I am going to go my Exercise Files and I am going to go to arrow.png. I am right clicking or Command+Clicking. I am going to go to Copy then I am going to go to my Joomla! website. This is the root of my Joomla! website, yours may be in a different location. From here, we want to go to images, M_images and then here you will see that we have a file called arrow.png. There is also called arrow_rtl.png. That's for sites that have text that go from right to left.
Now I am going to right click or Command +Click and pick Paste and I am going to Copy and Replace and there is my arrow.png file. Now when I go back to my website and I click Refresh, my new pink images come up. If they didn't come up for you, keep in mind that your browser may have cached the arrow.png that was orange. Make sure you go to the cache for your browser and clear it, if you still see an orange arrow and you have copied the arrow to the correct location.
Breadcrumbs are very functional on large websites and they add a great layer of web usability and some additional navigation to your website. It just makes it a little bit easier to use and Joomla! makes them so simple to add. You might consider adding them to your Joomla! website.
