Custom templates are the key to making a Joomla!-driven website stand out. In Joomla! 1.5 Creating and Editing Custom Templates, Jen Kramer McKibben offers instruction and insight to help Joomla! users create eye-popping websites. Jen starts with the basics, like how to add the Joomla! template codes to a static HTML layout, install the template package, and clean up styling after installation. She also shows how to make multiple layouts within the same Joomla! template, configure menus and submenus, and more. Exercise files accompany the course.
There are some prerequisite courses you should complete before you watch this video, as well as some tools that we recommend you use for completing this course. First of all, you will need to have knowledge of XHTML. A great way of getting this knowledge will be the XHTML Essential Training with William Weinman. You need to have knowledge of hand-coded CSS, not just the CSS that Dreamweaver will write for you. Two great ways of getting that is either the CSS Website Design movies with Eric Meyer or CSS for Designers with Andy Clarke and Molly Holzschlag. Finally, you also need to make sure you have completed the Joomla! 1.5 Essential Training videos with Joseph LeBlanc. This will give you a significant background in Joomla! and its general functioning that will not be covered as part of the templates course.
You will also need to have a method for editing HTML, XML, CSS, and image files. We are going to use Dreamweaver and Fireworks for the purposes of this video but you can use any software that you are comfortable with. Finally, it's best to have the latest version of Firefox downloaded and make sure you have the Firefox Web Developer toolbar installed. You can get these by doing a Google search for Firefox and the Firefox Web Developer toolbar. Once you have this background under you belt and you have all the tools in place, let's get started creating and editing Joomla! templates.
