In this video, we'll install Node on a Mac using a precompiled binary. This binary is available on nodejs.org so let's go there now. So if you're at nodejs.org, just click the big Install button, and this is automatically going to download the. pkg file for Mac. So I'm just going to click Keep here and it's going to download that file. Now if you got some other file, like a. msi file for Windows, or anything else, head over to the downloads page and you have several different options here for downloading packages.
So, for instance, if we have a different computer with a different architecture or you wanted a 32 bit rather than the 64 bit, you could select that here. Now our download is complete. So let's open the. pkg file. So now we're going to walk through this installer. This is like many other wizards for other software packages that are available for a Mac. Let's start by clicking Continue. It's telling us where it's going to install Node and MPM. So click Continue. Next, there's the software licensing agreement, so you can read that at your own pace and then click Continue.
Also click Agree to say that you agree to the terms of the license. It's going to tell us how much space it's going to take on the computer, so just click Install, and now type in your password. And now it's saying that Node is installed and it's ready to go. So it's installed both Node and NPM, and it's also telling us to make sure that the user local bin is in our path. I'm going to click close, and now I'm going to open up terminal. So now that I'm at terminal, I'm going to type in node and then hit Return.
And this pulls up the Node prompt. So here, I'm just going to type console.log, and then hello in a string. And type Return, and it's going to spit back hello and undefined. So now, Node is ready to go on this Mac. Whenever an update to Node is released, you're going to need to repeat this process again. If you'd like to learn a way of installing Node that does updates with a single command, have a look at installing Node via NVM in this chapter.
