If you're familiar with Twitter, the social networking service that allows you to share 140 characters status updates all the time, then you're undoubtedly familiar with something called a Hashtag. And Instagram actually uses hashtags as well. If you're not familiar with what a hashtag is, a hashtag is basically like a keyword that you attach to something-- either a status update, or a photo, or something like that-- that describes that particular photo or status update and when you type out a hashtag you always type out the Pound symbol which lets systems like Instagram and Twitter and things like that know that you're typing a hashtag.
So hashtag or Pound sign and then something after that always explains what it is that you're doing. So in this case I have got a picture of my dog here. And I'm going to just hit the check mark to go to the next screen. And so I have already typed out a description here that says, "I'm so tired," and so I might want to tag this with some hashtags to make it easier for people to find this on the web. So I might type out something like hashtag #bulldog because I do have an English bulldog, making it easier for people to find the photo of my dog or #dogdaysofsummer.
Anything that I feel is related to this photo I can hashtag it. So for instance this was taken on an iPhone, so I can type out #iPhoneography, that's a really big hashtag nowadays. And so once I type out all of these different keywords and I post this to different networks, people who are subscribed to my photo stream will see these hashtags, they can then click on those hashtags to see other photos that are related to this. So if I share this photo now, it's going to go out and you are going to notice that it pops up in my Instagram newsfeed.
You're seeing the hashtags #bulldog, #dogdaysofsummer and #iphoneography underneath there. If I happen a tap on #bulldog it's going to take me to a list of photos that have a hashtag of #bulldog making it easier for me to find photos with that hashtag. You'll see "bulldog" across the top with a number sign in front of it indicating that that's the hashtag I am currently viewing and this hashtag actually has 400,000 photos associated with it. So that is pretty crazy if you ask me. Let's go back and let's see if any of the other hashtags that I've used here will be applicable to other photos in the Instagram system.
See #dogdaysofsummer. When I hit #dogdaysofsummer you are going to see several photos of dogs just kind of lounging around, showing that they are having fun or they are really tired because it's hot. And so that's a really interesting hashtag as well. And so this has 6000 some odd photos in it right now and so that's a pretty, pretty decent number not as many as 400,000 that were in the bulldog hashtag, but you get the idea. So as you continue to share photos on Instagram, start using these hashtags that pertain to the photos that you're creating not only to provide other people with information about the photo, but also to give you an idea of what other people are sharing with a hashtag and give you new people and new photos to follow on Instagram as well.
So remember it's only available to you when you're adding a caption to your photographs. So once you take a photo or load it in Instagram and you've applied all your effects and hit that little check mark, in the Caption field just type out number sign or pound sign and whatever the word is you want to tag it with and then once you publish it, you will be able to click on that and view all of the photos related to that hashtag.
