Video: Sharing with social networks

One of the things that makes Instagram such a powerful program is the fact that you can share across multiple social networks using this one single app. So not only when you publish photos to Instagram can you share it with your Instagram followers but you could also share it with your Flickr friends or your Facebook friends or even your followers on Twitter using this one single application. The ability to cross-pollinate across all of these networks is a very powerful feature and I think that's what makes Instagram such an appealing choice for most mobile photographers. Because they can appear as if they're active across multiple spaces when they're actually only using this one single application to do so.

Sharing with social networks

One of the things that makes Instagram such a powerful program is the fact that you can share across multiple social networks using this one single app. So not only when you publish photos to Instagram can you share it with your Instagram followers but you could also share it with your Flickr friends or your Facebook friends or even your followers on Twitter using this one single application. The ability to cross-pollinate across all of these networks is a very powerful feature and I think that's what makes Instagram such an appealing choice for most mobile photographers. Because they can appear as if they're active across multiple spaces when they're actually only using this one single application to do so.

So in order to publish to these multiple networks on Instagram you will need to first connect all of your accounts to your Instagram account. And in order to do that you need to navigate over here to the Profile tab on the right-hand side. And once you do that you are going to click on the little Gear icon in top right corner. Once you do that you are going to go down to Share Settings. And you may have some of these enabled already, but if you need to hook up these services to your Instagram account it's as simple as tapping on them. So Facebook for instance, if I tap on that that's going to automatically reroute me to the Facebook for iOS application or the Facebook for Android application for that matter, if I have them installed.

If you don't have those installed and you're not logged in already, this will then navigate you to the Facebook mobile website inside of your mobile browser, where you will then have to allow access to Facebook. Once you have allowed access to your Facebook profile for Instagram it will reroute you back to Instagram and you will note that it's working because the Facebook icon will turn blue, like you see here. The same holds true for Twitter, if I tap Twitter it's automatically going to search my iOS device for the embedded iOS Twitter account that I have set up. In iOS 5, Apple started integrating Twitter accounts into iOS.

If you're not using that feature you will have to then go to Twitter's mobile website and login with your username and password. But if you are using that iOS feature it will automatically just log you directly in from this screen here. Same holds true for Android, if you are not currently logged in to the Twitter for Android application this will then reroute you to the mobile Twitter website, you just log in username, password. It should reroute you right back here and when it turns blue you know it's working fine. Tumblr works much the same way-- let's tap on Tumblr, it's going to ask me for my username which is just my email address and then my password so I will type that in and once we have that done all we have to do is tap Done in the top right corner and that should log us into Tumblr and it should turn blue.

Flickr, I will tap on Flickr here, that's going to take me over to the Flickr website and I'll have to log in using my username and password for Flickr or if you've used Facebook or Google to sign into Flickr you can use either one of those services. Once you enter in your username and password for Flickr whatever that might be it will take you to a screen similar to this where it will say, "Instagram wants to link your Flickr account." Just scroll down until you see a big blue button that says Okay I'll Authorize It. Once you see that, it reroutes you back to Instagram and Flickr should turn blue.

So now I have the ability to post photos to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Flickr all simultaneously from Instagram. So if I go back over into the Instagram application and I find a photo that I want to share with someone-- like let's say this photo here-- just position it, crop it and then let's give it a filter really quick and we will hit the check mark. Once I do that I can write a caption.

And then I'll scroll down here until I see the Share settings and I just tap the services I want to share with, in this case Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Flickr and let's tap Share. Once I do that you will see the photo pop-up in my Instagram newsfeed just like this, but also if I navigate over to Facebook once that loads up I'll scroll down a bit and here are some Instagram photos, you will notice the first one is the photo I just posted, if I tap on it, it loads up just fine. I can like it, comment on it, I can also tap Done to exit out.

Let's navigate over now and find Twitter. If I go to Twitter, the Twitter for iOS application launches here. I can click on the Tweet section to go to my latest tweets and you will notice the first tweet is the photo I just posted. And if I look at that I can tap that and take a look. Tapping it again allows me to hit Done and exit back out. I can also go over to the Flickr application. When I get over to the Flickr application I can tap on the You button at the bottom and once I do that I can see my photo stream and my Instagram photo should show up in my photo stream there.

And finally let's navigate over to Tumblr and once I get over into Tumblr, you will see it tries to load my newsfeed and there of course is the photo right there. I can then tap on that to launch it into a full-screen view. Tapping it again returns me back. And then I will just switch back over to Instagram. And so with this one photo I've now posted content to not only the Instagram system but also to Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and Tumblr. So there's four other places I have simultaneously populated with this one photo, making that easy for me to share content with as many people as possible.

So again if you want to connect your social networks to your Instagram account, just go over to your Profile tab, tap on Share Settings, hook up all of your different social networking services that you want to hook in Instagram and then start sharing with everyone across all of your different networks.
