With the Instagram mobile app and photo-sharing service, you can use your Android or iOS device to snap a photo, apply creative filter effects, and then share it with millions of Instagram users—and on Facebook and Twitter, too. In this course, Justin Seeley details the ins and outs of the Instagram app and sharing service. The course contains tips on shooting photos using the Instagram app and also describes how to edit and enhance photos taken with Instagram or imported from another app.
Justin then details the process of posting photos to Instagram and adding descriptive tags, captions, and location information. The final chapter offers insights on building a community of followers and on enhancing your Instagram experience with additional apps and services.
Although Instagram is mainly a personal social sharing service where individuals use it to share photographs across all different types of networks, whether it would be Facebook, Twitter, Google+ whatever it might be, Instagram also has its place in the business world. And so Instagram has actually launched an Instagram for Business blog which you can visit at business.instagram.com/blog. And once you get here, you're going to notice that it has a nice welcome message at the top, that says, Welcome to Instagram for Business. You can explore how businesses are using Instagram and they give you tips, brand spotlights, API examples, and news from Instagram HQ.
So let's take a look at this. Here is the Instagram Best Practices. So, this is the Tips section and you can see that it's tagged as Tips up here in the address bar. And so some of the tips here are like Instagram Best Practices, how to change perspective, sharing compelling content, how to tell your story effectively, how to post consistently and engage with your community. And so, there's all different types of things that you can read on this blog on how your brand or your business can use Instagram to reach potential customers and then extend the conversation with them using a service like Instagram.
So, they've got some examples here like charity water, NBC News, Puma, Almond Surfboards. There are all different types of people who are using Instagram as a way to extend their brand presence online and as a social media marketing tool. Let's go over here to this next section here, this is the Brand Spotlight. So you can see that GE, and they're calling them an Instagrapher Contest, and so basically General Electric is asking you to become an Instagram photographer here. They're running a contest for that. So you can see all that.
Then showing off the new Photo Maps feature; you've also got a Spotlight, the most followed brands on Instagram. So they're showing you different people and brands who are really popular on Instagram. They post different things that people are interested in, so like MTV, Starbucks, E! Online, Victoria's Secret, things like that, all of these people are posting to Instagram, and they're really starting to make a buzz and get some serious followers and traction based on this. So when they post photographs, it's not just a silly photograph of like what they're eating for breakfast necessarily, but it might be something from their new fall product line.
And then in the description of that, they're putting a link to that. So people see this photo and they're like, "Oh man! That looks really cool." And then they click on it and it takes them to a product page where maybe they're able to buy it or something like that. So, it's a great way to engage customers through the use of really cool imagery. Jump over here to some API examples, you can see how people are actually integrating with the Instagram API in order to use that in their own work and their own websites. And so here, you've got API Highlight: the Burberry Live from the Runway. So these are all things that are coming in live as they happen on the runway.
They've used Instagram's API to serve content up to their website which is pretty nice. It's also get Major League Baseball using Instagram, and all of these different brands that they're highlighting here give you a great example of how they're using their technical knowledge through their UI and UX teams to integrate the Instagram service into their business or their blog. It's really genius how people are doing this. Then finally, we have the Instagram News, and so Instagram News is where your business can go to get really up-to- date stuff on what's happening in the Instagram ecosystem and things that they introduce that are going to be really helpful for your business or your brand.
So, for instance, recently they redesigned the way photos are displayed in the mobile version of the Instagram website, and so they show you an example of it here, they teach you how it works, how likes and comments are interacted with, how the descriptions are displayed, all that kind of stuff, when they release the new Photo Maps feature inside of Instagram, they describe how to use it, why you would want to use it, things like that. So, this is almost like a real time tutorial base for how you can use these new features of Instagram as they continue to roll out. They're also going to have things here that pertain to Best Practices for business and stuff like that.
So be sure to check that out. All in all, Instagram, while it is this massive social networking and sharing service for individuals, it is really starting to become a tool for businesses to reach out and extend the conversation with their customers and create brand awareness.
