Exploring the Instagram website

When it comes to online social networking websites you would expect there to be a really robust presence when you're dealing with things like this. However, Instagram is something that's a little bit different. They rely mostly on the mobile applications that they've developed to give you access to the Instagram system. However, you can access the Instagram website at instagram.com. On the Instagram website there is some good information and there are also some areas of your account that you can actually manage from here as well. On the Instagram website itself when you go to instagram.com, you'll notice here that there's a little intro on meeting Instagram, exactly what it is, what it does, things like that.

There's also links to the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store to download the application for those respective devices either iOS in the Apple Store or an Android device in the Google Play Store. You can also access the Instagram blog down here at the bottom by clicking the Blog link. And when you do that that is going to take you to the Instagram blog which is going give you some nice updates about the Instagram system. It's also going to give you status updates when Instagram goes down or something like that. So Instagram's blog is a great place to go. It's blog.instagram.com and that's where you can go to get some serious help when things might not be going right or if there's an update that you want some more information about.

You can read all about it. For instance, right here it's talking about what's new inside of the new iOS 6/iPhone 5 version of Instagram. So it's pretty cool all the different things that they post here on the blog. So you might want to check that out as well. You also have access to your profile on the Instagram site. So once you log in to the Instagram site, you can actually access this link here at the bottom of the homepage called Your Account. And when you click Your Account that is going to take you to this page, which is your Edit Profile page. So once you're on the Edit Profile page, you're able to enter in your First and Last Name, your Email address, change your Username, add your Phone Number, change whether or not you're male or female, Edit your Birthday and your Biography, and you can also add in your Website as well.

This is also where you can go to Delete your Instagram account. If you'd like to delete it, you can get rid of it right there. You can also Change your Password, Manage Applications that are authorized to use Instagram. If you check this out, you'll see all of the different apps that have the ability to access your Instagram account right now. So I've got a couple of these right in here. And all of these just have permission to access different parts of my account. You can read about what they have access to and if you don't want to them to have access to your account anymore you can revoke access here. Basically, this is going to be third party services that you use on Instagram things to track your statistics, or to see who started following you, to get yourself an online profile, or even this thing called Instacanvas, which is used to create canvas and framed prints of your Instagram photos that you take.

You can also log out using this link right over here on the left. If you look up here on the top right you will have a link and if you click that it actually just drops down to say Edit Profile or Logout. So that is just a little shortcut link to those parts of the UI. Finally, the last piece of the puzzle when it comes to the Instagram website are photos. You can actually view Instagram photos online. So when you see people post Instagram photos on Facebook or Twitter or something like that, usually it's followed by a URL that says Instagram/something. So when you click that URL, it's going to take you to a page like this.

So you can see that Web Address here is instagram.com/P for photo /and a bunch of alphanumeric characters. That's a unique URL for this particular photo. So here is the photo of my dog Tank and Tank's got his Halloween costume on. And so in this photograph you're not able really to do anything with it; it's just kind of sitting there. But if you notice here, you can see the Likes over here on the right. So there are five Likes on this photo right now. You can also see any comments that are associated with it by clicking the talk bubble. That's going to show you any comments that are associated with this and will also allow you to comment.

So again clicking that expands out the comments. You can add a comment and then press Enter or Return to get that going. So that's the basics of the Instagram website. Like I said there's not a lot here, because they mainly want you to use Instagram on your mobile phone or your mobile device. So going to instagram.com, gives you access to very limited amounts of your account and other pieces, but mainly we're just going to be using the app. But I wanted to show you the Instagram website. So if you ever needed to do anything like change your profile or anything like that, you would know exactly where to go to do that.
