Adding borders to your photos

Video: Adding borders to your photos

One of my favorite features of Instagram is the borders that are applied to your photographs as you change from filter to filter. Some of the filters look really great with borders; some of them don't look great with borders. And so when I first opened up Instagram it wasn't immediately apparent to me how I added and removed the borders from a photo. So for instance if I pick one of these that has a border around it, like let's say Hudson. Hudson has this nice dark black border around the outside with rounded corners. I might like that for most of my photos but what if I didn't want that for a particular photo, I wanted to remove the border? Well there is no border removal button necessarily.

Adding borders to your photos

One of my favorite features of Instagram is the borders that are applied to your photographs as you change from filter to filter. Some of the filters look really great with borders; some of them don't look great with borders. And so when I first opened up Instagram it wasn't immediately apparent to me how I added and removed the borders from a photo. So for instance if I pick one of these that has a border around it, like let's say Hudson. Hudson has this nice dark black border around the outside with rounded corners. I might like that for most of my photos but what if I didn't want that for a particular photo, I wanted to remove the border? Well there is no border removal button necessarily.

But if you look in the top left-hand corner there is something that looks like a postage stamp or a border. And so if you tap that it will turn off the border for the photo that you're working on. Tapping it again turns the border back on. So some of the ones a little bit more obvious would be something that has a white border, like let's say the Sierra filter. The Sierra filter has this nice off- white kind of border that goes around the outside, makes it look very vintage-- almost a Polaroid. And in most cases it looks great. But in the lighter photographs things that don't have really dark contrasty things going on around the outside edges, I don't think this looks good.

So I might want to turn it off, so again you just tap one time you turn it off. And you can see this photo right here that I'm working on looks a little bit better with out it. So if I tap it again turns it back on, I don't necessarily like that. So, again removing it, just a single tap with that button in the top. Now certain effects look okay without the border like let's say Earlybird, but I think Earlybird actually looks better with the border in most cases. Lo-fi, Lo-fi is one of those interesting things where I don't really like the border ever. So I usually turn that off. Look how much better that looks without the border altogether.

And then finally the one that I always make sure that I have turned on is Nashville, because Nashville when you tap it without the border on it looks just like a standard cross-process-like photo. Turning that back on though you get that nice film appearance with a little information across the top and things like that so it's really cool that way. And so again, anytime you want to put a border on your photo, make sure that you're looking at the little border icon in the top left, make sure it looks like a stamp, if it doesn't look like a stamp that means your borders are turned off,. So to turn them back on just tap it one more time and it comes right back on.

So there you have it, how to add and take away borders from your Instagram photos.
