Explore the numerous type options, type-related features, and type-specific preferences of Adobe InDesign. Using practical, real-world examples, instructor and designer Nigel French dissects the anatomy of a typeface and defines the vocabulary of typography. The course moves from the micro to the macro level, addressing issues such as choosing page size, determining the size of margins, adjusting number columns, and achieving a clean look with baseline grids. This course takes you from laying out a page to delving into the hows and whys of typography.
Smart Text Reflow is a feature that automatically adds or deletes pages from your document as necessary. Maybe you've changed the size of your type, or maybe you've deleted part of your story, or maybe you've added to it, so you need more or less pages. Let's, first of all, see where the feature is located. It's in the Preferences > Type > Smart Text Reflow, so it's on for this document. Sometimes you may want to limit it to Primary Text Frames.
Primary Text Frames, I talked about in an earlier movie. Primary Text Frames are a feature unique to InDesign CS6 and above. Prior to InDesign CS6, they were called Master Text Frames, so this used to say Limit to Master Text Frames. I'm going to leave that off, so that it applies to all text frames. Add Pages To; we have these three different options. In the case of this particular document, they are all going to amount to the same thing, because I have just one story in the document.
And then I'm going to choose to delete the empty pages. So when I'm working with Smart Text Reflow turned on, this is how I will have it set up. Preserve Facing-Page Spreads; this is going to ensure that if you have text on the left-hand page, it will preserve the right-hand page, even though there may not be any text on there. I'm not going to have that turned on. So now let's say I make a change to my text.
So I'm going to insert my cursor into the text frame. Press Command+A to select all, including all of the text on the pages that I can't see, because this is one threaded story throughout all 74 of my pages. If I now change the size of my Type from 12 point to 13 point, obviously the type is going to take up more room. And after a brief delay, we see that we've now gone from 74 pages to 84 pages. Conversely, if I go from what was formerly 12 point, and I'll now go to 10 point, we've now shrunk to 52 pages.
So Smart Text Reflow is just an automated way of managing the number of pages in your document.
