So the concept of Auto Leading can actually be quite useful when you are just experimenting with type size and you don't really know what type size you are going to be using. You may want the Leading value to adjust automatically as you experiment with your type size. So in this case I have got this paragraph here I will go ahead and triple-click to select it. I have actually specified this to be 18 points of Leading, but if I actually change my type size, especially with my keyboard shortcut, so I will use Command+Shift or Ctrl+Shift and then greater-than or less-than on my keyboard. If I make the type size bigger, the Leading value doesn't change with the type size.
So I have gone up to 20 points now and on 18 points Leading and that may not be what you intended. You may have wanted your space to adjust between each line as your type size grew or shrank as well. So let's go back and undo this till we get back to our 14 point Leading I am just doing Command or Ctrl+Z. So what I want to do is set this paragraph back to be using Auto Leading and the keyboard shortcut for that is hold down the entire left hand side of your keyboard, Command+Option+Shift, Ctrl+Alt+Shift+A for Auto Leading. And you will see that you are now using Auto Leading.
If you take a look at the Control panel, instead of a specific number it's putting a number in parentheses. That's telling you that that's a relative number based on the relationship with the type size. So now if I increase my point size again, so Command+Shift, Ctrl+Shift+Greater-Than, you'll see the Leading value is incrementing with the type size value as well, as it should. So there you have it. Auto Leading. Why it is useful sometimes, and then how to return back to Auto Leading once you've applied a specific Leading value to a paragraph and you want to get back to it being Auto Leading.
