This next shortcut is a solution to kind of an annoying problem about InDesign. That's if you create a paragraph style based on an active selection, it doesn't actually apply the style to the paragraph that you've just created it from. Let me give you an example. So let's click into this paragraph. Let's say that I have done a bunch of formatting choices here, right? I have got a certain amount of type size and leading, a particular font, color, first-line Indent. I have done a bunch of choices here and I want to capture that as a Paragraph Style. Right now, it says it's just the Basic Paragraph Style with a bunch of local overrides.
So I want to create a new style and apply it to this paragraph. So textbook method, you go to the New Style icon in the Paragraph Styles panel, and click the Create new style button, and it does create a new style for you called Paragraph Style 1, but you'll notice that it did not apply that style to this paragraph. It's still the Basic Paragraph of local overwrites. So I am going to undo that, Command+Z or Ctrl+Z. The workaround, the shortcut here is to hold down the Command Key on the Mac, the Ctrl Key on Windows and then click on the New Style button and you'll see not only does it create Paragraph Style 1 for you, but it also tags the paragraph that the cursor is in with that new style.
So when in doubt, just hold down that Command Key as you are creating new styles so that the paragraph that you actually base that off of, actually does indeed get tagged with the style that you've just created.
