InDesign FX is a collection of self-contained effects projects designed to be completed in ten minutes or less. Taught by expert Mike Rankin, the series explores every aspect of InDesign's graphic effects capabilities through real-world examples, all without relying on Photoshop or Illustrator. The intent is to reveal the quick, practical, and sometimes surprising application of InDesign effects to creative projects.
Hi, I'm Mike Rankin and welcome to InDesign FX. In this week's effect, we'll see how to add a glittering metallic sparkle look to objects using a combination of blending modes with effects like inner glow and Satin. I'll zoom in on my text here, so you can see what we're going for. So, you can see that nice little sparkly texture in there, looks a little bit glittery inside the letters and also inside the darker stroke. So, we'll zoom back out and we'll make this. I'll go to the next page of my document where I just have some outline text here, filled with gray. I'll slide it over, make room for the dialogue box and I'll double click and I'll choose inner glow, I'll change the blend mode to overlay with 100% opacity, I'll set the source to the center, and the key setting here is noise, 30%.
Next, I'll choose Satin. Again, I'll pick the Overlay blending mode. I'll drop the opacity down a bit to 30%. I"ll set the distance to 70 and match that with the size. And set the angle to negative 90. I'll also choose invert. I'll click okay. And that's the bottom copy of my object. I'll zoom in and see a little bit of that glitter there. Zoom back out. Now, copy and paste this in place by pressing command C and then command shift option V or control shift alt V on the PC. And for this object, I'll switch from the normal blending mode to overlay.
That's going to just further enhance the highlights and shadows. I'll also give this copy a black ten-point stroke. And there you have it, the sparkle effect. So, in this video, we saw how to create a metallic glitter or sparkle paint effect by using a combination of effects like inter-glow with noise, and Satin. And, we also duplicated the object in place, and set the new copy to the overlay blending mode to enhance those shadows and highlights, and put more spark in the sparkle. I'm Mike Rankin, I'll be back in two weeks. Thanks for watching.
