InDesign FX is a collection of self-contained effects projects designed to be completed in ten minutes or less. Taught by expert Mike Rankin, the series explores every aspect of InDesign's graphic effects capabilities through real-world examples, all without relying on Photoshop or Illustrator. The intent is to reveal the quick, practical, and sometimes surprising application of InDesign effects to creative projects.
Hi. I'm Mike Rankin, and welcome to InDesign FX. In this week's effect, we'll see how to create a texture that looks like rusted metal. The key to this effect is to using two copies of the object you want to look rusted. Both copies have the inner glow effect applied with noise set in a brown color. So let's see how these two objects work together to make rust. I'll go to the next page of my document, where I have some outlined text that's filled with gray. And let's use some effects to rust this up. So I'll open my effects panel, double click to open the dialogue box and select inner glow.
I'll change the blending mode to multiply, and pick my brown swatch. Increase the opacity all the way to 100%. Change the source to the center. And I want a really large size, 140 pixels. And the key setting here is noise. I'll choose 30% noise, that creates that speckled texture in there and I'll click okay. Now I'm going to copy this and paste it in place by pressing Cmd Shift Option V, so I have a second copy of the outline text. I'm going to give this copy a stroke, 10 points of that brown color.
In the effects panel, I'm going to change the blending mode from normal to overall. So double clicking the effects panel to open the dialogue box, click on inner glow. I'll change the blending mode now to overlay and use my brown swatch with 100% opacity. I'll set the source to the center and again use that 30% noise value and click OK. And there, that looks pretty rusty. In this video, we saw how to make a rusted metal texture by using two copies of an object. Both objects had to innerglow effect applied to them with noise and the overlay blending mode.
I'm Mike Rankin. I'll be back in two weeks. Thanks for watching.
