InDesign CS4: Typography explores the numerous type options, type-related features, and type-specific preferences of Adobe InDesign CS4. Using practical, real-world examples, instructor and designer Nigel French explains the purpose of each feature and describes the conventions for how and when to use it. Nigel dissects the anatomy of a typeface and defines the terminology needed for the successful application of typography. He moves from the micro to the macro level, addressing such issues as choosing page size; determining the size of margins; adjusting number columns; and achieving a clean, structured look with baseline grids. This course is essential for anyone looking to expand their work from just laying out a page to understanding the hows and whys of typography. Exercise files accompany this course.
(Music playing.) Hi! My name is Nigel French. Welcome to InDesign CS4 Typography. This course is aimed at helping graphic designers and indeed anyone who uses type to improve their work by focusing on the rules and time-honored conventions of typography. We begin with essential background information on type terminology, how type is measured and the classification of typefaces.
Well, there may be no such thing as a correct typeface, I'll explain how to make informed typeface choices as well as give some suggestions on how to effectively combine typefaces. Of course, we'll be looking specifically at how to apply this knowledge in Adobe InDesign. We'll be working with type on both the micro and macro levels. The aesthetics of kerning, the difference between the various whitespace characters and the distinction between fake and real small caps as well as the big picture, setting margins and columns, designing with grids and working efficiently and achieving consistency through the use of styles.
