From exploring each of its tools in depth to teaching layout principles and techniques, instructor David Blatner covers everything needed to use InDesign productively. He demystifies InDesign's powerful features, including converting QuarkXPress files, formatting characters and paragraphs, setting up style sheets for better productivity, and much more. Exercise files accompany the tutorial.
Welcome to InDesign CS3 Essential Training, I'm David Blatner. And many of you might know me from my many books and articles about InDesign, Photoshop, or QuarkXPress. I'm also the co-host of InDesignSECRETS.com, and I'm the editorial director of both InDesign magazine and the InDesign conference. In this title I'm going to guide you through everything you need to know to get up and running with Adobe InDesign CS3. Before I do, let me say a little bit about InDesign itself. Adobe InDesign has become the new standard for page layout applications around the world, replacing QuarkXPress, PageMaker, and perhaps even most design firms, ad agencies, magazines, newspapers, and book publishers around the world. And there's a reason for this. I've worked with a number of different page layout programs since 1987, and there's no doubt in my mind that InDesign CS3 is simply the best page layout program on the planet.
It's ease of use, combined with its powerful features goes way beyond anything else out there. But, the amazing thing is it's also fun to use. However, I have discovered one problem, or should I say challenge, when teaching about InDesign. Every feature relies on every other feature. So really, to get the most from the program, you might consider watching the whole series through not once, but twice. The first time through, you'll learn plenty. But the second time around, you'll really begin to master InDesign. On the other hand, if you need just a little tidbit of information about a specific topic, you can always jump right to that topic, without having to see all the movies before it. We've tried to make this as easy and flexible as possible for you. I'm glad you're coming along for this ride, because as I always like to tell my students, the more you know, the better it gets.
