In Collaborative Workflows with InDesign and InCopy Anne-Marie Concepción shows how Adobe InCopy and InDesign work together, helping editors and designers collaborate on publications, and save time and money, with no additional hardware, software, or expensive publication management systems. It's easy to add footnotes to any story that you check out, but like a lot of the other advanced text processing topics I'll be talking about in this chapter, footnotes is something that the designer usually sets up and that the editors in InCopy implement, and by set up I mean the designer is the one who say like, what is the paragraph style and the character style used by the footnote in the footnote reference. So you really don't have control over that in InCopy, but you do have control over actually inserting the footnotes. So let's see how that works. I've checked out this story in the beginning.
Now this might not be the typical story that you would add a footnote to, but it will serve its purpose. I'm going to zoom in and let's say that we want to add a footnote after the words "Plant Care." So I'll click right here, and then I just go to Type and choose Insert Footnote. So, the reference appears right after Plant Care and then the number appears down here for our footnote with this little separator bar, which may or may not appear when you do it for your documents because this is something the designer has control over, and they can choose whether or not that shows and what color it is and how long it is, and I'll say See our Plant Care brochure on our web site! And then if we want to add another one say right here, I can just right-click and choose Insert Footnote, or I can assign a keyboard shortcut to it, so I don't have to keep adding it to a menu, and that footnote appears right below.
The world's second-best city, next to Chicago of course. Another way to work with footnotes is to use Galley and Story, and I think you're going to like this. If we switch to say Galley, you'll see that footnotes appear in line. They have a slightly different icon, and they're numbered, right. So you can collapse and expand the footnotes, just like you can with notes, and if I want to add one here, I could say I want to do one after clientele. I'll just right-click, choose Insert Footnote, and start typing some sort of footnote.
So did you see that other command that you can collapse all the footnotes? You'll only see this command when you're in Galley or Story View. So pretty cool. Adding footnotes is very simple. If you place a Word file that has footnotes, you have the opportunity to maintain those footnotes, and they're converted to InCopy footnotes. So whether you create them in Word or whether you create them from scratch in InCopy, or InDesign, don't worry. The program will support your use of footnotes.
