Mordy Golding demonstrates how to be more productive, efficient, and creative by taking advantage of Adobe Illustrator to create pixel-perfect web graphics and interactive Flash content. Illustrator CS4 for the Web investigates the pros and cons of pixel- and vector-based web graphics, demonstrates efficient workflows, and explores the creative options available in Illustrator. Mordy also covers design techniques, such as creating typography that works well on screen, adding reflections, and making Flash animations. He discusses new Illustrator CS4 features, including using multiple artboards, bringing art into Dreamweaver, and utilizing Flash Catalyst. Exercise files accompany the course.
So you have created your masterpiece here inside of Illustrator and you are ready now for the next step. You are ready to bring your artwork into Flash, the application. Now, one of the great things that Adobe has done recently is made it much easier to move artwork between Illustrator and Flash. In fact, beneath the hood, Flash now uses the exact same drawing engine that Illustrator does. That means that when you bring artwork from Illustrator into Flash, the integrity of your artwork is preserved. But in reality there are a variety of preferences that you can set inside of Flash to make this transition a pleasant one.
Let me switch over to Flash here and I will go over here underneath Flash, and choose Preferences. On Windows, you would find the Preferences settings underneath the Edit menu. Notice on the left side here where it says Category, towards the bottom there is something here called AI File Importer. By choosing this option I now see all the settings that Flash applies when bringing artwork in from Illustrator. For example, do you want to able to exclude objects that appear outside of the artboard? Do you want to import hidden layers? When you import text, do you want that text to remain editable? Would you like it to be converted to Outlines, or do you want it to be Rasterized? Notice that in each of these cases as well, whether you are importing text, paths, images, groups, or even layers, you can specify to have Flash automatically convert those elements to movie clip symbols. Likewise, you can set the default registration for those symbols.
For now, I will leave the default settings here inside of Flash, but as we become more comfortable with moving artwork from Illustrator into Flash, you may come back to this Preferences settings to get things exactly the way that you need them.
