Mordy Golding demonstrates how to be more productive, efficient, and creative by taking advantage of Adobe Illustrator to create pixel-perfect web graphics and interactive Flash content. Illustrator CS4 for the Web investigates the pros and cons of pixel- and vector-based web graphics, demonstrates efficient workflows, and explores the creative options available in Illustrator. Mordy also covers design techniques, such as creating typography that works well on screen, adding reflections, and making Flash animations. He discusses new Illustrator CS4 features, including using multiple artboards, bringing art into Dreamweaver, and utilizing Flash Catalyst. Exercise files accompany the course.
Making sure that certain Preference Settings are set correctly from the beginning will really save you a lot of heartache later on. For example, when working with web graphics, you are always working with pixel dimensions. Now, when we created a new document using the Web Profile, we saw that Illustrator already set our measurement system to pixels. However, that doesn't mean that everything is now using pixels for measurements. For example, when I click on this rectangle right over here, I could see that my Stroke is measured in points. I find it easier that when I am designing web graphics I really want to use a consistent measurement system. So I will go over here where it says Illustrator and choose Preferences. If you are on a Windows machine, you would go under Edit and choose Preferences, but I'm going to choose here Illustrator > Preferences, and then I will choose Units & Display Performance.
Here for a Stroke Weight, I will also choose Pixels. So now my General setting is set to Pixels as well as my Stroke. I am going to leave my type setting left to Points right now, just because in my own designer mind it's easier for me to understand type size based in points than pixels. But I will leave that up to you. Now I will click OK, and you notice that when I go ahead and I select this box right now, my Stroke measurement is measured in pixels. Now, as I make adjustments all throughout Illustrator, I will have one consistent measurement system, pixels for web graphics.
