In the 90s, grunge was everywhere. It was a reaction to the ordered, neutral look that had dominated graphic design since the end of the second world war. Not coincidentally, the rise of grunge corresponded to the increasing affordability of home computers, and the availability of desktop publishing software. A cynic might say that the reason for the popularity of grunge, was that you could pass off your mistakes as design intentions. You didn't need to learn the rules. Mistakes looked cool, and sloppiness was a virtue. However, when you come to imitate a grunge look, it quickly becomes apparent that it's not easy to get a good result. And that the designers who were using this style successfully, had a very incisive understanding of the rules. And how to effectively break them.
