Hi there. First of all, let's go through a scenario.

Locking artwork in Illustrator

Hi there. Welcome back to Creative Quick Tips. My name is Justin Seeley. And in this video, I'm going to be talking about a shortcut that I use all the time inside of Adobe Illustrator and it wasn't until recently that I realized, not many people know about it. And it's something that I really take for granted because it's something that makes my life so much easier. First of all, let's go through a scenario. So let's say that we're working on this slide. This is a slide for a recent presentation that I was doing. And, as you can see, it's got a lot of different objects on the slide. And what I want to do is, I want to be able to quickly and easily edit all of these small details in the middle.

And so, what I might do is try to click and drag a selection around those objects to make a change to them. Unfortunately, when I try to click and drag, I wind up moving my background layer, and that really frustrates me, because then I have to reset it, and then I have to go in here and I have to manually click on stuff, and it just makes it such a headache if I have tiny little details that I'm trying to get a hold of. So, there's a shortcut in Illustrator that makes this so much easier to deal with. It is command or control 2. The number 2 on your keyboard. When you do that, you can lock an object in place.

So there I just selected the background, I press command or control 2 and now it's locked. Now I can click and drag inside of here and actually make selections of the smaller objects. In fact, I could click and drag, select all these big objects, Command or Control to those, and that way I only have access to these little small details here inside of it making it much easier for me to work with these objects and change them without worrying about the position or the color or anything else of the surrounding objects around them. Now to unlock all of the objects on the art board, all I have to do is hold down Option or Alt, Command or Control and press the number 2 again.

And that's just going to unlock everything allowing me full access to the background, to all of these different shapes, and allowing me to work on those independently once again. I hope that this shortcut saves you some time. I know it's something that I use almost every day when I'm working in Illustrator and I just took it for granted. So I wanted to share it here with you and I hope that it helps you keep your workflow going smoothly and saves you some time in the process as well.
