Video: Links panel enhancements

In the latest Creative Cloud update, Illustrator's links panel gets an overhaul. With the ability now to unembed images and package files, it's no wonder that Adobe boosted the features in the links panel. Let's take a quick look at the features that are now available. I'm beginning this video with the links.ai file already open on my computer. And what I'm going to do to show you some of these features is I'm going to click on one of these images in my document. Now the first thing I'd like to do is show you here that you can click on the name of the file and that will actually allow you to also relink and access options about this link.

Links panel enhancements

In the latest Creative Cloud update, Illustrator's links panel gets an overhaul. With the ability now to unembed images and package files, it's no wonder that Adobe boosted the features in the links panel. Let's take a quick look at the features that are now available. I'm beginning this video with the links.ai file already open on my computer. And what I'm going to do to show you some of these features is I'm going to click on one of these images in my document. Now the first thing I'd like to do is show you here that you can click on the name of the file and that will actually allow you to also relink and access options about this link.

In addition, with an image selected we can click on the linked file link and that's going to basically show us another instance of the Links panel. Now to make it a little bit easier to see, I'm just going to go ahead and open the Links panel by going to the Window menu. And I'm just going to re-arrange my window so we can see things a little more clearly. Because now in the Links panel you're going to notice that we have this additional disclosure triangle down here in the lower left of the panel, and if you click that triangle you're going to see all of the options that have been added.

Now I'm really going to open up this panel so we can see everything here because there's some really nice features that we gained in this update. So first of all we can see the name of the file, but secondly, we can also see what the format is. So, in the event that the extension is incorrect or is not being displayed, we can see the format right here. We can see the color space, and very easily the location. What I like about this is option is that if I want to quickly access that file in my finder or Windows Explorer, I just come over here to the right and click on the folder icon and that will take me to the location where these files exist.

Back in Illustrator, we can also see the resolution, the pixel dimensions and the scaling of the selected graphic. So if I click on the header, we can see that that is a different dimension. Click on the logo bike, we can see that that's scaled a little bit. We can also see the created and modified date and also identify whether the file contains any transparency. As you can see, with the updated Links panel in Illustrator, all of the details about placed links and graphics in your Illustrator documents are just a click away.
