One of the best ways to be efficient inside of Illustrator is to create nondestructive files and by that I mean files that can easily be edited at any time. One of the best ways to create nondestructive files is through the use of masks. Now there are three types of masks inside of Illustrator. There are clipping masks, layer clipping masks, and also an opacity mask, which is almost the same as an alpha channel inside of Photoshop.
