Hi there.

How to change your artboard color in Illustrator

Hi there. My name is Justin Seeley, and I want to welcome you back to another installment of Creative Quick Tips. This week I'm going to be showing you another little Adobe Illustrator trick, where we talk about how to change the art board color for your projects. So the first thing I'm going to do. Is create a brand new document 1024x768 is fine. Doesn't matter what size, really. And basically, there are two ways to change the art board color in Illustrator. One is to just take the rectangle tool and choose your fill and stroke color. So in this case, if I want to make it green, I do that. Grab the rectangle tool and just draw out a rectangle that fills up the entire background, and then lock that rectangle in place with Cmd or Ctrl+2.

That locks whatever object you have on screen making it easy for you to come out here and work without having to worry about clicking on anything and moving it. Now if you don't like that Object > Unlock All. I can just delete that and let's say you just wanted to change it so it looks that way all the time. You don't have to draw a shape. Okay. That's easy to do as well. Go to the File menu. Go down to Document Setup. And here what you're going to do is you are going to click a box that says Simulate Colored Paper. And then what you are going to do is come to this top box right here click and you are going to basically just put in a color.

Now if you want to pick a color like this from the slider you could certainly do so. So if I want to mimic that green color I just had on-screen I can kind of dial that in. And close that up, and then let's hit ok, and there we go. I've got my background color in place right like that. Now it should be noted that this way is not something that's going to show up, this is simulating colored paper. So you're not going to actually like, see this whenever you go to let's say, print it. When I hit Command or Ctrl+P for instance you don't see that shape.

Because, it's just simulating colored paper. It's assuming you're going to print this on green paper. Now this might be a good option for you if you're doing something like a website background. Cause essentially you're just changing the color for reference and then in the browser you can actually just type in what color you wanted. And do it that way, so it depends on what type of project you're working on. If you need it to print, obviously you would want to use a shape, if you're just using it for reference and you're going to be mocking this up somewhere else, or creating a website out of it. Maybe the document setup window is the best way for you to do that. In any case those are two quick and easy ways for you to easily change the art board color, while you're working inside of Adobe Illustrator
