Today we're going to create a three dimensional coin. And we're going to go ahead and fill it with that foreground color.

Today we're going to create a three dimensional coin. Three dimensional so that you can twirl it around, see it from any angle, and do anything you want to it because it is a 3D object. And what the coin is going to be a quarter, like the one we see on the screen. And I started out by taking two quarters and scanning them on the flatbed scanner. We see the result on the screen right there, the head and the tail. Using the Elliptical Marquee tool, I went in there and selected each one of them and sent to their own individual files. Here it is in its own layer, with no background, and then here with the tail.

Which I also did a rotate 180 on it so that it would be upside down like a real quarter. The two sides are opposite each other. So that was my start. Let's go back here and let's start to create our coin. I'm going to deselect that selection there. And I'm going to pick a gray right from the quarter itself. Like right there. Just midtone right in there, which became my foreground color. And I'm going to create a new layer, a new layer right here, which we're going to call Coin. And we're going to go ahead and fill it with that foreground color.

Foreground color, OK, there it is. So we have this gray fill. So, what I'm going to do now is go up to my 3D menu and choose, New Mesh From Layer > Mesh Presets > Cylinder. These are some preset shapes that you can quickly make from a simple layer. I'm going to say Cylinder. And it's going to create this cylinder. Now, you'll notice that this little window came up, says you are about to create a 3D layer which would you like to switch to a 3D workspace? You can say don't show again.

But by saying Yes, you'll notice that none of my panels reflect 3D objects, so I'm going to say Yes. And it automatically reconfigure my panels to give me my 3D properties and 3D lay panel. So here we see that it's created this little cylinder. And I can select that cylinder and move it. See, its got a top and a bottom. And there it is in place, right? Now, when I select it, you notice it has all these little this little gizmo here that just showed up. I can twirl it, and you can see that this little object. What it does is that it reflects all three sides, the three axes, the up, down, and the in and out, there.

So there are these other little symbols on the device. And these control various parts of our object. Like for instance, this one will move it up and down in space. This one will rotate it. And this one will shrink this particular axis. So I'm going to grab that one and shrink it down so that our cylinder is now this little narrow cylinder, like that. So it starts to look more like the coin that we want. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to drag it down so it's straight on like that. And then this bottom box, way down there, the one that's joining the three axes, that controls the overall size of all axes.

So if I go in there and start making this larger, I'm going to enlarge my, my little coins so it's about the size of the existing quarters in the scene. And I'm going to move it down just to right, right about there. That looks good. So now, now we have our little coin. You'll notice in the 3D layer here that the cylinder is made up of three things. The cylinder material, that's the side which right now we're not seeing, the top, which is what we are looking at, and the bottom. So what I'm going to do now is to give them what is called a texture map. And I'll go to the top, top material. You notice, when I clicked on it, the properties change to reflect that particular part of the object.

So I'm going to go over here to the use a little preset materials. And I've got it set up right now for small list. So I can quickly find the one I'm looking for, which is this one right here, no texture. I'm going to click on that. So it's got no texture right now so I can come over now to this diffuse feature right here and click on the folder and say Load Texture. And what I'm going to do is I'm going to take my face, or the head. There's the head. Open. And now you see that my coin now has the face.

So what I'm going to do is I'm going to rotate it to the other side. And I'm going to select the bottom material. Choose that same no texture. And go in there and say, load texture, and take the tail. Open. And there we see that now we have the two sides to our coin. We have the heads and a tail. Now, the sides of the coin, well that's a whole nother story. because of the fact that a real quarter has these little ribs in there. So, what we're going to do now is to create those little ribs. So, here in background layer, I'm going to get a little closer.

So, we can see what's going to happen next. I'm going to select a tall rectangle. Just like that, a nice thin little line. And I'm going to go ahead and fill that line with a black. There it is. I'm going to just deselect it and give it a little filter. Select it and just give it a little bit of a blur, gaussian blur and that's good. Just enough to add a little gray in between there. So now, what I'm going to do. And let's get in real close to see this. I'm going to get in and select a little portion of it, just like that. Right, see? So I have, like, what looks like two pixels of white.

And then the pixels that make up that thing. And now that I have that little tiny section selected, I'm going to go in here and say. Define Pattern, and we'll call it rib, okay. Now, pulling back I'm going to create a new file and that's a good size, good size as any. And I'm going to go in there and fill this. I'm going to say Fill, I'm going to use a pattern, 100% normal and I'm going to choose that pattern we just created right there. Click, and there it is.

I'm now going to take this file and save it. Save As and we're going to call it ribbing, okay. I'm not sure that's what you call those things but we're going to call them ribs. Save. Now we can close it. We don't need it anymore, it's gone. So now back over here. I'm going to deselect this, and let's, at this point, let's pull back and let's make our quarter layered, just let's fill it with we'll fill it with black. So, now we can really start to see our quarter. Now, don't worry about this stair stepping that we see there.

We'll see how we fix that later. So, now I'm going to go to my 3D object. I'm going to click on the coin so I have it selected. And go back to my 3D panel, and there we see the cylinder material, that's this side here. Now, we're not going to give that a material like we did before, what we're going to do is go down to Bump. See? Bump, and here is where I'm going to say Load Texture. And, in that texture, we're going to take the ribbing file and say Open. And there's the little ribbing that appear.

We can increase the size of those bumps and so on but there's the little bumps that go on our quarter. So now that we have our little quarter in place let's pull back a little and look at it and we see that this little quarter here can be rotated from all different sides and lit however you want to do it. And do anything you need to it because we have a three dimensional coin that we can now manipulate. It's that easy. 3D feature, opens up a whole new world that wasn't in Photoshop before.
