Mordy Golding demonstrates how to be more productive, efficient, and creative by taking advantage of Adobe Illustrator to create pixel-perfect web graphics and interactive Flash content. Illustrator CS4 for the Web investigates the pros and cons of pixel- and vector-based web graphics, demonstrates efficient workflows, and explores the creative options available in Illustrator. Mordy also covers design techniques, such as creating typography that works well on screen, adding reflections, and making Flash animations. He discusses new Illustrator CS4 features, including using multiple artboards, bringing art into Dreamweaver, and utilizing Flash Catalyst. Exercise files accompany the course.
It seems as if one of the prerequisites of creating Web 2.0 graphics is having rounded corners. In fact, you see rounded corner artwork all over the Web these days, and when you are using Illustrator, it's really easy to apply to that effect. Rounded corners are added as a live effect inside of Illustrator. That means that you can apply it to a shape, but then always go back and modify or adjust it. Let's take a look. I'll start by click on this rectangle right here. I just want to point out that for this rectangle, if I go over here to towards and click on the Stroke Setting. You can see that I have aligned the stroke to the inside of the path.
That will prevent any anti-aliasing issues for that shape. I'll click over here on the path to target the entire path, and then from the Effects menu down here on the bottom, I'll choose Stylize, and then Round Corners. I'll specify a radius of around 10 pixels. I'll click on the Preview button to see what that looks like, and then I'll click OK. The great thing about working with Live Effects is that if later on my client says, "You know something? The corners are just too rounded for me." I can easily go back anytime and change it. I'll click on the object right here, simply click once on the word Round Corners here, adjust it to maybe around 6 pixels. Let's look at the Preview, yeah. That looks great. Click OK, and I could easily update that at anytime.
