In this movie, I will show you how to take that black and white dot drawing from the previous movie and turn it into this full color rendering. Now, this is a very easy technique to pull off but its a very versatile one as well because you can apply it to any number of images. I am going to go ahead and close this final version of the portrait. I'm going to create a copy of this existing smart object here by pressing Ctrl+J or Cmd+J on a Mac. Notice that creates a copy of not only the smart object, but all of it's filters as well. We don't want the filters for this effect, so just go ahead and grab smart filters, and drag them and drop them into the trashcan, so that you delete all of the filters in one fell swoop. Now you want to change the blend mode, from Normal to Color, in order to create this effect here.
But to my way of thinking that's not quite enough. I want a higher impact effect. So I went ahead and took this new version of Portrait Layer and pressed Ctrl+J or Cmd+J on a Mac, in order to copy it as well. And then I changed its Blend mode to Hard Light, in order to produce this effect. And you can actually use Hard Light by itself if you want to. You could turn off the color version of the Portrait layer and we end up with this effect or you could try Overlay or you could try something like Soft Light as well. But my favorite effect is to apply Hard Light.
Along with the color version of the layer below, an then to press the five key to reduce the opacity of the hard light layer to 50%. An that's the technique folks. That's how easy it is. So there's really, nothing more, except to switch out the image, and show you how cool this works. So you can switch out the image by double-clicking on any one of these three thumbnails here, because they all linked to the same Smart Object. So I will just double-click on the middle one and if we get the alert message just click okay, all its doing is telling you Smart Objects work, and then I could turn off the face layer, close this image.
And then click the Yes button here on the PC, or the Save button on the Mac. And I'll switch us back to our image composition. And you can see that all three of the Smart Objects update. Now, you might say, well, Deke, gosh. It appears to me that the thumbnails did not update, and that's true. That's a bug in this specific version. And you can get those thumbnails back just by turning the layers on and off, like so, and that'll update those thumbnails. We can also add a totally different image in here if we wanted to. I'll go ahead and double-click on any one of these layer thumbnails. Click OK in order to hide the alert message, and I'll switch to this guy. So, I'll duplicate this image by right-clicking inside of it with the Rectangular Marquee Tool.
Then I'll choose Duplicate Layer, and I'll go ahead and send this image to the portrait.psp file and then click OK. That's a temporary Smart Object file there. Then I am going to rename them. And then I'll go ahead and close the image and I'll click the Yes button here on the PC, that's the Save button on a Mac. And I'll go ahead and switch back to our three layer composition. And you can see that we've automatically updated the image from this to this. And he looks really darn good I think, and he looks better in color than he does in black and white. So notice if I were to Alt+click or Option_click in the eye in front of the bottom portrait layer.
The effect doesn't really blend itself to this guy quite as well as you can here. However, if I Alt+Click or Option+click again to bring back the color layers, the image looks absolutely great. and that folks in a very tiny nutshell is how you take a black and white detroit and turn it into a full colour detroit here inside Photoshop
