Bert Monroy: The Making of Times Square, The Tools

with Bert Monroy

Take a virtual journey to the bustling streets of New York in Bert Monroy: The Making of Times Square. Digital painter Bert Monroy reveals how he created the minute details that build the impressive 108,000 x 21,600 pixels, 25-feet wide photorealistic portrait of this iconic intersection.

In this installment, The Tools, Bert demonstrates how he uses the brushes, filters, and textures in Photoshop to create everything from the trees in Central Park to the billboards on Broadway, and shares his techniques for keeping his project organized with layers and groups. He also touches on the importance of channels and channel calculations, and how the evolution of the tools in Photoshop from CS3 to CS5 shaped his work.
Topics include:
  • Making a chain brush
  • Understanding the layers in lights
  • Using the 3D tools in Photoshop
  • Using layer styles
  • Creating wood and fabric textures
  • Applying a layer mask
  • Linking layer masks with layer styles
  • Understanding channels

Bert Monroy

Bert Monroy is considered one of the preeminent pioneers of digital art. He builds his hyper-realistic digital paintings as a traditional artist would, adding color and texture, except he uses Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator as his media. Bert spent 20 years in the advertising industry and he has been a commercial illustrator for 30 years. Bert co-authored the first book on Photoshop and he is the author of several other books, including Photoshop Studio with Bert Monroy: Digital Painting. He also writes a column called "From Bert's Studio," which appears in Photoshop User magazine.

An accomplished teacher and lecturer, Bert has served on the faculties of the School of Visual Arts (New York), the Center for Creative Imaging (Maine), and California College of the Arts. He currently teaches at San Francisco State University. Bert was a regular on TechTV and he hosted PixelPerfect with Bert Monroy, a weekly Photoshop podcast for Revision3 Internet Television. Bert has been a guest on many other TV shows around the globe. He also consults with corporate clients, including Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios. His film credits include work for Industrial Light & Magic, Pacific Data Images, and R/GA. Bert has taught the Adobe Photoshop Creativity Seminar Tour, and he is a popular speaker at many conferences worldwide. He is a member of the Photoshop World Dream Team and was inducted into the Photoshop Hall of Fame in 2004.
