So what we're going to do now is start to create our new page. I'm going to go ahead and hit the red button here, Create new page, in just a moment. But I wanted to show you that if you're not logged into your account for some reason, and you want to create a page, you can go ahead and do a Google search for something like create a Google+ business page, and it will take you to this page, or you can go direct to google.com/+/business and create your Google page. Either this big blue button or sign in to your account from this Pages icon is going to take you to this page. So, there are different types of pages.
The first page that you're going to see here when you're creating your Google+ page is the Pick a Category page, and you have different options here. You have Local Business or Place, Product or Brand, Company, Institution or Organization, Arts, Entertainment, or Other. A Local Business page is described as hotels, restaurants, stores, services. I look at this option as the best choice if you want to tie your Google+ for local account to your Google+ Business page, and especially if your business is a local business, then this selection best applies to you.
If your business is more focused on a product or brand like apparel, cars, things like that, this would be a more appropriate choice. For No Obstacles Sport, we're going to go ahead and make this our selection as we build our Google+ for Business page out. A company, institution, or organization page applies if you want your page to be more focused on your organization like a nonprofit, versus your brand or a geographically-based business. Arts, Entertainment, and Sports have their own page category simply because of the strong social interest occurring out on the world wide web for these particular categories, could be books, things like that.
This selection would apply if the page is more media-driven. and then there's Other. If for some reason your business doesn't fit under any of the categories above, you can go ahead and create this. What we'll do is we'll hit the Product page and get started. Google will guide you through the information they need to create your page. You will see where it asks for your name, website, and category. So, I'm going to go ahead and call it No Obstacles Sport, and I'm going to go ahead and add the website, and I usually just copy and paste this in, and then you select a category.
Since No Obstacles Sport is focused on apparel and accessories, I'm going to go ahead and select that, and your page will be publicly visible, and you can have the option to choose the content's appropriateness. For some organizations, you may want to limit it to certain age groups. In this case, it's an athletic clothing line, and it's applicable to all users of all ages. You have the option to be informed of future page releases and other relevant information, and this is an account signed Jaryl Leonard.
If she wants to stay in touch with Google+ for Business page information, news, tips, advice, she can go ahead and stay opted into that. and then the next step is agreeing to the Pages Terms and verifying that you are indeed authorized to create this page, and this is something that you would check if you are indeed someone at the organization who does have permission to do this, and you want to make sure that folks are not going out there and creating pages on your behalf as well. So what you're going to want to do is agree to this, and for any of you who are curious about the Pages Terms or want to make sure that you're truly signing off on terms that you agree to, you can go ahead and click this and learn more.
I'm not going to click it for the sake of time, but you can go ahead and read more if you'd like. Next, I'm going to go ahead and create my page. These are just the basics of your page's profile. You can always complete this later, and I'm not going to go through in super details and fill these out, we will go through in a following chapter on optimizing your profile. But No Obstacles Sport has a couple taglines, and one of them is Transcend The Ordinary. I'm going to go ahead and put that in as the Tagline for now.
What I'm going to do next is go ahead and select the profile photo. I tend to follow steps in top-down order and so I'm just going to go through step by step. I'm going to hit Set profile photo, and you have a few options. You can upload a photo from your computer, you can pull them from your own photos, connect it to Picasa's web album. So, if you have a Picasa account, you can connect your photos that way. You may have some photos of you saved. In this case, I don't. And you can also have the web camera take a picture of you.
Since I don't want to do that as a representation of the No Obstacles Sport brand, I'm going to go back to the Upload option, and select a profile from my computer, and I did create some photos in the right size at 250x250 pixels, and you can also add a caption. So I'm going to go ahead and call this No Obstacles Sport. I recommend creating a caption. It just helps the searchability of the image, and for images like this that may not be identified to someone, this is the logo for the brand.
It could give a little more clarity, and you can go ahead when you're happy with it, and you can, of course, move it left, right, and you have the creative kit as well that you can get detailed with and crop and do all of those things here. In this case, I am happy with the look and feel of it. But for those of you that want to spend a little more time refining that, you can go ahead and do that, and it looks good to me, No Obstacles Sport is spelled correctly, fantastic! Setting that, and following the blue button to continue.
I also have the option to start promoting the page. I can tell my friends about this page, I can tell the public, I can tell people in my circles. What you can do is you can add a comment, and you can share this. In this particular case, I'm not quite ready to share this with everyone, I'd actually like to perfect it a little bit more. But let's say I just want to share it right now with friends. Then I can do that, or if I wanted to share it right now with my co-workers at No Obstacles Sport. Let's say I'm not comfortable making this public to the world yet, because I want to add more information.
You can uncheck this, and I can go ahead and share this and in my No Obstacles Sport list, I have Mark LaCie, Juan Ricardo Estes, and Akee Ning Wu, and I can say Check this out - I'm finally getting the Google+ page set! Stay tuned! So, I can do internal messages to people which is great. That's the beauty of the contacts. So I'm going to go ahead and share this with my staff, and I can go ahead and finish this up.
So now I have Google+ as a page, so I was logged in as Jaryl Leonard. Now that I created the page, it reminds me that I'm using Google+ as a page. I'm going to hit OK. So now that our page is complete, we have No Obstacles Sport which is live here. And what I can do, I can see how it appears to other folks, you can do search for No Obstacles, and I can go to the home page to show that you have a lot of searching options. So, once you create that Google+ Business page, people can search for things like everything, people and pages, posts, sparks, hangouts, events from circles.
By being part of the Google+ community, as people are on their own personal accounts, they can check all of these out. So now No Obstacles Sport is visible through all of these different search results, also searchable from their geographic location. In order to have the highest likelihood of being searched and found, you want to have the most optimized profile. So what I'm going to do is go to No Obstacles Sport here, and this is how the page appears to someone who is coming for the first time.
Now, as you can see, it doesn't have the best brand appeal quite yet, and we'll be going ahead in future chapters and optimizing that. What I tend to do is start with the photo first, and we will eventually change this photo out, and I'll explain why in a future chapter. But right now we have the logo here, it's on brand, and there is some optimizations we can do to make it more on purpose, that is more action oriented. You can also go to your About Profile and see how that looks. It does link to the website, the tagline is here.
You can always go ahead and edit that at any time by editing profile, and then you can go through and add all these things like contact information, things like that. I'm going to go ahead and change the tagline here. So, the content you write is searchable to customers, so it's not just your organization name, and it's not just customers, it's potential customers. So I'm going to go ahead and change the tagline. So, Athletic Obstacles Unlocked: Athletic Wear and Accessories.
So, I changed the tagline to have some specific product language, so not only is the organization's name covered in the title of the business page, but the actual what we do is covered as well. And when you're happy with this, you can always go ahead and hit Done Editing. In the next chapter, we will dive deeper into how to add and customize your Google+ page.
