Understanding font metrics

Unfortunately one of the things that typically gets lost in the creation of icon fonts is that fact that at the end of the day you're still creating a font. Because of this, you'll need to understand how fonts work and what their properties are, in order to create an effective icon font. In this movie, I want to talk about Font Metrics, which are the measurements that are used to define individual character values, such as height and width. Fonts are made of individual characters, referred to as Glyphs. In a typical font, these glyphs are designed to work together to form words and sentences. Each glyph has properties that allow it to interact harmoniously with the other Glyphs in the font. Although, this information is largely esoteric to anyone outside of type designers. It still is incredibly important to understand, if you want to design your own icon font.
