Video: Inserting header graphics and content

So we are making good progress on our design although it looks a little mixed up at the moment. I'd like to go ahead insert my header graphic next. So up here where it says "This is the header," I am going to get rid of the text that I have there because I really don't need that and I am going to insert an image in that location, just by clicking the image link up here on the top. My image location is right here in the Chapter_03 folder inside of the images folder and I can give this header graphic some alternative text. In this case, it's going to be "Hansel & Petal Events. Click for home." And since we have said that you can click this graphic to go home, which is always a good practice for your logo graphic, that it should back to the homepage and be clickable, we will go to our link here and what I am going to do is set it to link to just slash and what that means is it will go back to the root of your website and link to whatever the homepage is called.

Inserting header graphics and content

The reason why I am using slash instead index.html is because when you move this design to a content management system the homepage may actually be called index.php and if you specified index. html as your target for the link, it's not going to work in your content management system. So just by specifying the slash, it will go to the default page for your website, which is usually the homepage, which could either be index.html or index.php depending on how your web server is configured, and say OK.

And there is our big Hansel & Petal Events graphic. Now notice that this is pushed down a little bit relative to our background graphic. That's probably because we have this text on the top that says 'This is the wrapper'. We really don't need that text, so let's just go ahead and get rid it, and now it all ends up nice and neat. I would like to go ahead and drop some content into this design. So one of the things that I need to do is make sure that the content area has a white background. I am going to assign that white background to the contentwrapper.

The reason why is my left column ultimately was likely to be shorter than the content itself on many of the pages of the website and when you do your layouts with the divs frequently you'll wind up with one column, so to speak the left side, wind up being shorter than what you have on the right side of the page or vice versa. By assigning your background color to the contentwrapper, that difference in height for those divs won't be quite so obvious. So we're going to go to our CSS again, and I am going to go to contentwrapper for the background, and I am going to assign color as f8f8f8 and that background comes from the color of the comp itself.

Note that it matches up nicely here with the footer. So say OK. So let's go ahead and put some content into this design. I have some content already put together for you. If you'll go to File > Open File, there is an HTML file in your Chapter_03 folder called Content.html. If you will open that up and just copy it, just highlight everything and say Edit > Copy, then we will switch back to the Hansel & Petal tab, highlight where it says "This is content," and say Edit > Paste, and you can see that our content goes nicely down the page.

On our left side, we are going to put in that graphic that was about the environmental commitment of Hansel & Petal. So let's put that in as well, highlight "This is left," and hit the Delete key to get rid of it. Then we're going to insert an image and that's going to come from, once again, the Chapter_03 folder, the images folder, and the image called environment and say Open, and we could make that link somewhere if we want. I'm not going to do so at this time and for the alt text I am just going to put in "Protecting the environment," and we'll say OK.

So now we have some text here under the content. We have an image here on the left-hand side, and we have some more text up here at the top for the contentwrapper. We can get rid that text now we won't need it. So the next thing that we all need to do is make our left column float to the left, make our content float to the right and we'll be well on our way to getting this webpage looking really, really good.
