Tags are an important part of Flickr. They're a kin to keywords that we use, and they're useful for marking your photos to help other people find them. And then, you can use tags, also, to find other people's photos. So, it's just a way to help find, or get to what you want to get to within this giant universe of images. I'm going to go back to our Canon camera here, and if we scroll down the screen a bit, we'll see that we've added a few tags already.
I think I did those on upload, and if I want to add another tag I can do that right here. Let's say DSLR. And that's the thing. When you're thinking about tags, you're thinking about what terms are people using to search for certain items. And then, you want to add those terms to your photo if you want it found in the Flickr universe here. So, I added DSLR by hitting the Return key, and I could add camera. That's another tag, and I'll hit return.
So, we're adding search terms is what we're doing. Now, what'a little awkward, in my opinion, about the current Flickr interface is I'm adding tags and I"m not actually looking at my image. There is a way around that. Let me scroll back up here to our photo. We go over to the Flickr dots. Click on that. There's this little command that we have called Edit, title, tags, and dates. Click on that. And here, now I get a version of the image that I can see while I'm actually working on my tags.
So, you see the multi-word tags are embedded in quotes. Let's come up with another one. So, we'll put one in quotes here. Macro Lens, because it's a macro lens. And then, close the quotes just like that. And in this case, I don't have to hit enter afterwards, we're going to, I'll scroll down to the bottom here. Once we're done, we'll just save the changes. And by the way, if you feel more comfortable editing your title and description you can do that in this field also.
So, we've added that, we added Macro Lens and put it in quotes, so it'll be one tag and I'm going to save the changes right here. Let's scroll down the screen, see how we did. There it is right there. Now, if you want to get rid of a tag. If you decide, I don't like Macro Lens, just click on the Red X. It will go away. Now, if you're searching for images, and you want to focus on tags, you can do that. So, let's say, up here I want to search for Canon 60D, that's a DSLR body that we're looking at. We click Search.
And Flickr will give me all sorts of things. If I want to refine that search just for tags, I go to Advanced Search. And here, I click on Tags only. And I would probably say The exact phrase also. Because it could break this up, and we're going to get unusual results anyway, but we'll get less unusual results. Now, we're just searching by tags only.
And you see that you're getting different shots because the person tagged these shots with Canon 60D because they used the camera to take the shot. So, you're going to get different results searching by tags. But if you want to know everything that's key worded with the term Canon 60D, then that's the way you do that. You can search by tags. So, we're going to go back to our shot right here and we'll go back to our photostream and there you go. So, when you're thinking about search engine optimization in the Flickr universe, think tags.
And that will help other people find your shots and you can use it to find other folks' images also.
