We recorded the mobile training in iOS,
but most of the content applies to Android
| | 01:04 |
devices as well.
Please keep in mind that Flickr's
| | 01:08 |
interface is constantly evolving.
So, over time, you might spot minor
| | 01:11 |
differences in it's appearance.

1. Getting Started with the Flickr Mobile AppSigning in to the Flickr mobile app| 00:00 |
You're looking at my iPhone right now.
And I just think this is so much fun.
| | 00:04 |
And we're going to be dealing with the
Mobile Flickr app.
| | 00:07 |
Which I think has really brought Flickr
back to the forefront.
| | 00:11 |
I'm very excited about it, I use it all
the time myself.
| | 00:15 |
And we're going to be using it for mini
movies now so.
| | 00:19 |
Get out your iPhone, and let's take a look
at how this works.
| | 00:24 |
The first thing we have to do, of course,
is sign in, so I'm just going to click on
| | 00:27 |
the Sign In screen.
And by the way, this is the same process
| | 00:32 |
you'll have to go through when you first
download the app and you want to use it.
| | 00:37 |
And we're going to sign in using Google,
but you can sign in using any number of
| | 00:42 |
ways using your Yahoo account or Facebook.
But we'll use Google and just the usual
| | 00:48 |
sort of thing, all right.
So we've entered our information, and now
| | 00:59 |
look, we're in Flickr, we're having the
Flickr experience on our iPhone.
| | 01:05 |
So, use the same sign in, of course, that
you're using on your Flickr account that
| | 01:09 |
you use on your computer.
And what'll happen is that here on the
| | 01:15 |
iPhone, you're going to have an iPhone
version of the Flickr experience.
| | 01:21 |
And we're going to walk through all the
different steps that are involved with that.
| | 01:25 |
Main thing is I just wanted to get you
online and ready to go to into the next
| | 01:28 |
movie
| | 01:30 |

| Choosing photo preferences on the Flickr mobile app| 00:00 |
Now that I'm logged into my Flickr Mobile
app, I'm going to do a few settings.
| | 00:05 |
And we'll start with the Photo Settings
because I think those are very important.
| | 00:09 |
Then, we will get into some of the other
menus in subsequent movies.
| | 00:14 |
So, I'm going to go down here to these two
dots right here.
| | 00:17 |
This is the More menu.
And then, I'm going to just tap on it.
| | 00:22 |
And then, from the More menu, I'm going to
go to Settings right here.
| | 00:27 |
So, I'll tap on that.
Now, I'm seeing tapping and you're seeing
| | 00:30 |
a mouse pointer.
That's because we're doing this on a computer.
| | 00:34 |
So, you'll be using your finger and I'll
be using the mouse.
| | 00:38 |
Just let me clear that up in case you were
wondering what's going on here.
| | 00:42 |
Okay.
Here we go.
| | 00:44 |
So, here are the Photo Filters right here,
so I'm going to just scroll those up to
| | 00:49 |
the top so we can focus on those.
Photo Filters, save to camera roll, upload
| | 00:56 |
size and upload on WiFi only, those are
the four things that we're going to be
| | 01:00 |
looking at.
Now, Photo Filters, I highly recommend
| | 01:04 |
that you turn these on if you've used
Instagram at all and played with those
| | 01:08 |
Photo Filters, you know how much fun they
are.
| | 01:13 |
Well, the ones in Flickr are even higher
quality in terms of the image than the
| | 01:17 |
ones on Instagram.
And so, if you like to play with your
| | 01:20 |
images, turn on Photo Filters, they're a
blast and we're actually going to play
| | 01:23 |
with them in an upcoming movie.
Save to Camera Roll.
| | 01:29 |
This is something that generally I
recommend that you do.
| | 01:32 |
If you play with an image using the Flickr
editing tools, and you want that finished
| | 01:36 |
product to also be saved to your camera
roll, locally on your phone, in addition
| | 01:41 |
to being uploaded to Flickr, turn this on.
The only reason that you might want to do
| | 01:48 |
otherwise, turn it off, is that you have
limited space here on your iPhone and you
| | 01:53 |
don't want to be adding extra pictures.
So, that call is yours, but I do recommend on.
| | 02:00 |
And then, if you're using iCloud in Photo
Stream, if you save it to the camera roll
| | 02:04 |
those images will also be backed up in a
second place, which is never a bad idea, right?
| | 02:11 |
Redundancy is good when it comes to
backing up our stuff.
| | 02:15 |
I'm going to move down here to upload
size.
| | 02:18 |
Now, I'm actually going to tap on this
with my finger.
| | 02:20 |
because you have some options.
The original, the best quality, that's the
| | 02:24 |
biggest that you can get.
I recommend that you use that because
| | 02:28 |
then, for instance, later on if you want
to make a print off of Flickr or something
| | 02:31 |
like that, then you have more pixels
available to you.
| | 02:35 |
If there's a reason why you would want
smaller images, maybe you're concerned
| | 02:39 |
about people downloading your stuff off
Flickr, that could be one of the reasons.
| | 02:46 |
Then, you have these two other options
that give you reduced sizes.
| | 02:50 |
So, generally speaking, unless you have a
compelling reason not to go with these, I
| | 02:54 |
think original or best quality is the way
to go.
| | 02:58 |
So, we have it set that way right now.
So, I'm going to tap on Cancel and just
| | 03:03 |
leave it that way.
And then, our final setting here, upload
| | 03:07 |
on Wi-Fi only.
If you have a celluar plan restricted
| | 03:11 |
data, I'll just tap on this right now,
turn this on.
| | 03:16 |
Which means then, you only use data for
uploading photos to Flickr when you have a
| | 03:21 |
Wi-Fi network available, which generally
doesn't cost you anything.
| | 03:27 |
Now, if you have a cellular data plan
where that's not an issue then you might
| | 03:30 |
as well go ahead and turn this off.
I just tapped on that again because that
| | 03:35 |
way you have a more immediate reaction
with Flickr as you work on your photos.
| | 03:41 |
So, those are the four basic Photo
Settings in the Settings menu.
| | 03:46 |
We're going to get to Privacy next.
So, stay tuned.
| | 03:49 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Setting privacy preferences on the Flickr mobile app| 00:00 |
Flickr gives you options for controlling
the privacy of your photos and what you
| | 00:04 |
see and what others can see, even more
importantly.
| | 00:08 |
We're going to take a look at those right
now.
| | 00:10 |
What I'm going to do is I'm going to tap
on these two dots here which is the More
| | 00:13 |
menu and then I'm going to go up to
Settings, tap on that.
| | 00:19 |
And then we're going to go down the menu a
bit here, till we get to Photo Privacy.
| | 00:25 |
Right here, and we're going to take a look
at these settings.
| | 00:28 |
Now, these are your default settings, so
what will be applied and you don't have to
| | 00:31 |
think about it.
And then of course you can change these
| | 00:35 |
settings for individual photos as you
want.
| | 00:37 |
So think of these as just your general.
Here's how they are most of the time but I
| | 00:42 |
know that I can make changes if I need to.
Now your general Photo Privacy right here,
| | 00:46 |
I'm just going to tap on that.
You have a lot of option in general,
| | 00:50 |
public is probably the way most of us will
go.
| | 00:54 |
We want other people to see our photos.
If however you want a different default
| | 00:58 |
setting, you only want Friends and Family
or Friends or Family or Only You to see
| | 01:02 |
the shots.
You can make that default setting here.
| | 01:07 |
I'm going to go with Public, so I'm just
going to tap on Cancel, because that's the
| | 01:11 |
way we have it.
Now Location Privacy, that's a little
| | 01:15 |
different, I'm going to tap on that.
And you just have to keep in mind that
| | 01:20 |
smartphones generally record Geodata when
they take the picture.
| | 01:24 |
And if you go straight from Smartphone to
Flickr, that mapping data will travel with it.
| | 01:30 |
So you have to decide do you want people
to see that as a default setting.
| | 01:34 |
I personally set it to Private, to Only
Me, because I don't want to have to worry
| | 01:38 |
about shooting someone's kids birthday
party.
| | 01:42 |
Or something like that with my iPhone and
then going oh my gosh.
| | 01:46 |
You can look at a map and see exactly
where their house is.
| | 01:49 |
So I set it to Private, but you have all
these choices all the way up here to Anyone.
| | 01:54 |
Or you can restrict it just a little bit
with Contacts or Friends and Family,
| | 01:57 |
Friends or Family.
Set what's comfortable for you.
| | 02:02 |
As I said in my case, I'm going to tap on
Private.
| | 02:05 |
And I know that I can loosen that up on a
photo by photo basis if I need to.
| | 02:10 |
Photo Safety Level I'm just going to tap
on that right now.
| | 02:14 |
Most of us will be safe but if you are
posting images that might be disturbing to
| | 02:19 |
children, then you want to change that.
So just something to keep in mind.
| | 02:24 |
If you're shooting landscapes and vacation
stuff, Safe is probably the way to go.
| | 02:29 |
So that everyone can see those shots and
that there's no warnings when people come
| | 02:33 |
to your site.
And Flickr will warn people if you have a
| | 02:37 |
Moderate or Restricted setting there.
Importing EXIF location data.
| | 02:43 |
Do you want to see the location data from
other people's shots?
| | 02:47 |
I think generally speaking, I do,
especially if they shoot a beautiful
| | 02:50 |
landscape and they have the EXIF location
data with it.
| | 02:54 |
I get to see on a map exactly where they
took that shot.
| | 02:57 |
So generally speaking, that's an ON.
If you don't want that to show up on your
| | 03:03 |
Flickr account, then of course you just
tap on it and switch it to OFF.
| | 03:08 |
Finally, on the SafeSearch Filter, that's
when you're looking for other people's shots.
| | 03:14 |
Do you want to be warned if you come
across someone's site who has a restricted
| | 03:18 |
setting on it?
Do you want to be warned before you
| | 03:21 |
actually see the pictures?
If you do, then tap on Safe.
| | 03:26 |
If you don't care about that, then you can
loosen that up a bit all the way to the
| | 03:30 |
fact where you don't get any warning at
all.
| | 03:34 |
So it's up to you, generally speaking,
because I have people looking over my
| | 03:38 |
shoulder a lot of times when I'm using
Flickr.
| | 03:41 |
I like to keep it on Safe just so I don't
have any accidental embarrassing situations.
| | 03:46 |
Alright, so those are the Privacy
Settings.
| | 03:50 |
Set them for the default way that you want
them, knowing that, of course, you can
| | 03:53 |
override them on individual photos.
| | 03:56 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Enabling sharing on the Flickr mobile app| 00:00 |
Well, Flickr is a sharing environment in
itself and it has its own community.
| | 00:05 |
But there are times when we may want to
share our photos on Flickr with our
| | 00:08 |
Facebook friends or on Twitter.
And you can do that, you can set that up
| | 00:13 |
and it actually, it's very easy on the
iPhone to do that.
| | 00:18 |
Once again, I'm going to go to the More
menu, where the two dots are right here.
| | 00:23 |
I'm going to just tap on that.
And then, I'm going to go up here to Settings.
| | 00:28 |
We'll tap on that.
And then, I'm going to go up here to
| | 00:31 |
share, just like this.
And I have three basic sharing options,
| | 00:36 |
Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr.
I don't have anything set up for Tumblr
| | 00:42 |
because I don't use it, but you'll see
that my Facebook and my Twitter are
| | 00:45 |
already set up.
And it's really easy to do because if
| | 00:49 |
you're using those on your iPhone, then
you've already entered your log in
| | 00:53 |
information for those accounts.
And all you have to do, for example, on
| | 00:58 |
Facebook, now I'm already logged in, so
when I tap on it, it's going to ask me if
| | 01:02 |
I want to Disconnect.
I'm just going to Cancel that, but if I
| | 01:06 |
hadn't already logged in I'll tap on it.
And it'll just go ahead and log me in
| | 01:11 |
based on the settings that I've already
established in my preferences for the iPhone.
| | 01:17 |
And the same things with Twitter.
If I just tap on Twitter right now, it's
| | 01:20 |
going to say, hey, do you want to log out?
Go no, no, no.
| | 01:24 |
I want to stay logged in, but if I hadn't
done that already it would go ahead and
| | 01:27 |
just log me in under the account that I've
already established.
| | 01:32 |
By doing this, then when you add a photo
in your mobile Flickr here, then you can
| | 01:36 |
just easily share your stuff with these
other groups.
| | 01:41 |
And this is very convenient.
And Flickr becomes a data base of your
| | 01:45 |
images for all sorts of uses, including
your social networking.
| | 01:50 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Finding friends on the Flickr mobile app| 00:00 |
When you're first starting out on Flickr,
you might not have a lot of connections online.
| | 00:05 |
Here, In this particular environment, you
might in other places.
| | 00:09 |
So, if you want to bring some of those
friends into your Flickr world, you can do that.
| | 00:13 |
I'm going to go down here and tap on the
more menu, these two dots.
| | 00:18 |
And we're going to go up here to find
friends.
| | 00:21 |
Right here, and we have some options here
that are sort of fun.
| | 00:26 |
Now, you can delve into our contacts book.
However, if you do that, I'm going to tap
| | 00:31 |
on this, you'll get this warning.
And I would read this warning carefully,
| | 00:36 |
because what happens is, your contacts
will be stored on the Flickr servers and
| | 00:40 |
depending on your comfort level with that,
let that guide your decision...
| | 00:47 |
In this case, I'm going to go ahead and
just hit cancel.
| | 00:51 |
But how about my Facebook friends?
So, you tap on that and it will look for
| | 00:55 |
your Facebook friends.
It will present them to you and you may
| | 00:59 |
want to invite a few of them to come over
to Flickr, you know, and so.
| | 01:04 |
Now, I like the way that it does this.
It does automatic Add.
| | 01:09 |
Very optimistic of them.
I think, you know, it should be automatic
| | 01:15 |
Off and then you decide who to add.
They just assume you're going to bring
| | 01:20 |
everyone in.
Well, I don't know about that.
| | 01:23 |
Anyway, I'm going to not bring anyone in
right now.
| | 01:25 |
I'm just going to go up here and hit this
back button and the same would work for Twitter.
| | 01:31 |
And then if you go down here to "More,"
you have a few more options, Google and Yahoo.
| | 01:37 |
And Less, and then, if you just want to
make new friends.
| | 01:41 |
Which, you know, I never really thought of
Flickr serving that role in my life.
| | 01:46 |
But, you know, I guess it could.
You could go down here to tap on, Make new friends.
| | 01:50 |
See what they come up with.
I don't think they're taking into account,
| | 01:55 |
your personality, or your likes, or
anything like that.
| | 01:58 |
I think they are just presenting you some
cool shots, and you go, wow, that person
| | 02:02 |
took a neat shot.
Maybe they'll want to be my friend on
| | 02:06 |
Flicker, so that's what that is.
And I will leave it to you as to how you
| | 02:12 |
pursue or not pursue.
I'm going to hit Cancel right up here in
| | 02:16 |
this corner right here, and we're going to
back out of that.
| | 02:21 |
So, that is the Find Friends aspect of
Flicker.
| | 02:25 |
There's some good opportunities there, and
I think it's particularly helpful if you
| | 02:29 |
have a community that you're close to on
Facebook or Twitter, in particular.
| | 02:34 |
And you want to invite a few of them over
to your Flicker community.
| | 02:38 |
This is a great way to do it.
| | 02:40 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Exploring Flickr on the Flickr mobile app| 00:00 |
One thing that I like to do is get
inspired by other people's photos, and
| | 00:04 |
Flickr is fantastic for that.
In fact, they have an area called Explore,
| | 00:10 |
right down here.
See this little icon right here?
| | 00:13 |
I'm going to tap on that.
And they have two areas.
| | 00:16 |
So, they have what they call Interesting,
and indeed it is.
| | 00:20 |
And you just look at this, and wow,
there's really neat shots here.
| | 00:25 |
And if you want to see more by that
photographer.
| | 00:28 |
Then, you just tap on any of the shots,
and you go to a bigger version of that
| | 00:32 |
shot and, of course, their area.
And then, you have nearby.
| | 00:37 |
So, in our case, we're in Carpinteria
right now, so I'm just going to go over
| | 00:40 |
here and tap right here on the nearby
button.
| | 00:45 |
And, well, this is what's happening in
Carpinteria right now.
| | 00:51 |
Looks like a coffee machine and not much
else.
| | 00:54 |
Believe me, it's more interesting than
this here, so I just want to say that
| | 00:58 |
we're getting a bum rap right now on
Flickr.
| | 01:02 |
Usually you have beautiful ocean shots and
things like that.
| | 01:05 |
So, we'll go back to Interesting because
it is far more interesting right now.
| | 01:11 |
But I just want you to know that down
here, this little icon, is a great thing
| | 01:15 |
to tap on when you just want to see some
great photography.
| | 01:20 |
Maybe get some new ideas.
Get inspired to go out and make your own
| | 01:24 |
beautiful pictures.
| | 01:25 |

| Getting started with Flickr on Android| 00:00 |
When Flickr updated its web app, it also
updated the Android version of the app
| | 00:05 |
and, you know, it's really nice.
I really like the way this looks.
| | 00:11 |
I want to give you just a quick overview
here, so you can find your way around if
| | 00:14 |
you're using the Android phone or mobile
device.
| | 00:18 |
So, up at the top there, where the lynda
training icon is, there's a little down
| | 00:23 |
arrow, and I'm going to tap on that right
now.
| | 00:27 |
And, there you'll see the different areas
that we're used to on flicker.
| | 00:32 |
You'll see sets, groups, favorites, photos
of, and contacts.
| | 00:38 |
I'm going to tap on sets right now.
And, here we have our different sets and
| | 00:44 |
we can motor through them.
For instance, on the top set there, I'm
| | 00:50 |
going to swipe my finger from right to
left.
| | 00:56 |
And we can see the different photos in the
set.
| | 00:59 |
And then I'll swipe back from left to
right to go to the beginning.
| | 01:05 |
And then we have the other sets below it.
If you've looked at other movies in the
| | 01:09 |
training, you may recognize some of these
pictures.
| | 01:12 |
I'm going to swipe from the bottom upward.
See our flowers, our equipment, our
| | 01:17 |
hiking, all that good stuff is right here.
Now I'm going to tap on the camera icon,
| | 01:25 |
and that's in the upper right hand corner
there, and here I can take a new photo or
| | 01:30 |
choose from the gallery either way.
Tap on that icon again to close that.
| | 01:37 |
And now I'm going to tap on the hard
return button, at the bottom of the phone.
| | 01:44 |
And now we're in the menu area, so I'll
swipe upward so we can see some of the
| | 01:49 |
other options that we have here.
I'll tap on settings, here we have our notifications.
| | 01:56 |
We can determine our upload signs.
We can enable or disable location
| | 02:01 |
services, and we can even sign out.
I'm going to tap on the soft menu button
| | 02:06 |
in the upper left corner there, swipe
downward to bring us back up to the top.
| | 02:14 |
And I'll tap on the Lynda training icon to
bring us back to our pictures.
| | 02:20 |
So there's an overview.
I think they've done a nice job, it's very attractive.
| | 02:24 |
I think the images look great on the
phone.
| | 02:27 |
And I'll talk in more detail about some of
the other features in upcoming movies.

2. Photography with the Flickr Mobile AppTaking pictures with the Flickr app| 00:00 |
So, not only can you enjoy other people's
pictures and your pictures on Flickr, you
| | 00:05 |
can use the mobile app to take pictures on
your smartphone.
| | 00:09 |
And it actually does a very nice job.
It's a good camera that's built in, so
| | 00:14 |
what I'm going to do to take a shot is I'm
going to go right over here and tap on
| | 00:18 |
this blue camera icon right there.
And that brings up the camera.
| | 00:25 |
And so, I have a little still life here
setup with some lenses to show you the
| | 00:29 |
functionality of this camera app.
We'll start up here in the upper left corner.
| | 00:36 |
And that is the flash control.
So, I'm just going to tap on that right now.
| | 00:41 |
And we have our flash options.
These are just like a normal
| | 00:45 |
point-and-shoot camera.
You have Automatic flash.
| | 00:49 |
You have Force Flash On, so that the flash
will go on no matter what you're doing.
| | 00:54 |
And this is, of course, if you have a
flash on your iPhone, right?
| | 00:58 |
And then, you have no flash at all.
So, generally speaking, I leave the flash
| | 01:03 |
off unless I know I need it because I
don't like flash unless it's absolutely necessary.
| | 01:09 |
So, I'm going to tap on that one right
there, and so we have the flash off for
| | 01:13 |
the moment.
It won't go on regardless of how low the
| | 01:17 |
light is.
Now, right below the flash, we have the
| | 01:20 |
grid setting, right here.
I'll tap on that.
| | 01:24 |
And you can turn on a nice little grid.
And I think that's particularly handy for
| | 01:29 |
phone photography to help you keep the
horizon lines straight and stuff like that.
| | 01:35 |
So, you just turn that off and on right
there with the little grid icon.
| | 01:38 |
We'll turn it off.
Now, this right here switches cameras.
| | 01:42 |
So, we have a FaceTime camera right here.
And we're using the back camera at the moment.
| | 01:49 |
The back camera is higher resolution, it's
what you normally use to take pictures.
| | 01:53 |
But if you want to take a picture of
yourself, you can switch to this camera by
| | 01:57 |
tapping on that icon.
I'm going to spare you that right now.
| | 02:01 |
I'm just telling you that I'm here in the
studio with a headset on and my poindexter
| | 02:05 |
glasses and I just really don't think you
want to see that.
| | 02:09 |
Now, this x right here is if you want to
exit the picture taking app and just go
| | 02:13 |
back to regular Flickr, which we will do
at some point.
| | 02:17 |
But not right now because we're having too
much fun.
| | 02:20 |
And then, down here you have the zoomer
and so I'm just going to do a little zooming.
| | 02:25 |
I tap on the zoomer and I just bring that
up and bring that down.
| | 02:30 |
So, you can do some digital zooming.
Now, I'm going to tap right on the screen here.
| | 02:36 |
I'm just going to tap right in this area
right here, and I'm going to bring on the
| | 02:40 |
focus and the exposure control.
Right now, they're together so, I'm
| | 02:46 |
focusing, I'm setting the exposure using
the same, the same pointer here.
| | 02:52 |
And I'm just dragging this around to
different areas.
| | 02:54 |
And you can see how the exposure changes.
Like if I go to a dark area, right, it's
| | 02:58 |
going to get very bright, overexposed.
So, you can control the exposure by
| | 03:04 |
dragging this around.
Now, here's the thing.
| | 03:07 |
What if you want to set exposure in one
area and focus in another?
| | 03:11 |
I mean, we have the exposure right, but
look at it, we're terribly out of focus
| | 03:14 |
right now.
So, if you do a two finger tap on this,
| | 03:18 |
you can separate these.
So now, I can set the focus to the
| | 03:22 |
foreground object right there which is
what I want, and then I can set exposure independently.
| | 03:30 |
So, that's a two finger tap, we just put
two fingers and you just tap around the screen.
| | 03:34 |
And it will separate these guys.
So now, I can have my focus and my
| | 03:39 |
exposure the way that I want.
So, I'm ready to take a picture, so then
| | 03:44 |
all I would do is just tap on the camera
icon right here, that will take a shot.
| | 03:51 |
If I want to look at an existing shot.
That I have on my camera roll already, I
| | 03:57 |
just tap right over here, and now it
brings up my camera roll, and all my other goodies.
| | 04:04 |
So, you don't have to take a shot to
process a shot in Flickr, you can use
| | 04:07 |
something that you already have.
I'm going to tap on the Cancel button.
| | 04:12 |
And we're going to come back to our
camera, and let's take a picture right now.
| | 04:16 |
I think I have things set up the way that
I want.
| | 04:18 |
I'm just going to tap right down here on
this little guy right there, and let's
| | 04:22 |
take a picture.
Now, once I take a picture, I can do some
| | 04:27 |
processing here in the Flickr app and
that's what we're going to do in the next movie.
| | 04:34 |
So, stay tuned.
| | 04:35 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Choosing filters with the Flickr app| 00:00 |
But we have an image that we've captured
with our camera using the Flickr app, and
| | 00:03 |
now I'm going to show you the filters.
I love the filters, the filters are down here.
| | 00:10 |
We also have some image editing tools I'm
going to show you in the next movie and
| | 00:13 |
those are up here.
So wow, I mean, we're really into the fun
| | 00:17 |
stuff right now, aren't we?
So, I just want to tap on some of these
| | 00:21 |
photos just to show you how high the
quality is on this.
| | 00:24 |
So, we'll start with panda and you get a
preview of how the filter will look with
| | 00:28 |
the little umbrella picture that it has.
Let's go over to Mammoth and they really
| | 00:35 |
change the shot, don't they?
I sometimes have a hard time deciding what
| | 00:40 |
I'm going to use.
And it's funny, one filter may be
| | 00:43 |
absolutely perfect for one shot.
And then you go to a different photograph
| | 00:48 |
and you go, oh, no, it's absolutely wrong,
I want to use Iguana.
| | 00:53 |
I'll go over here and let's take a look at
Aardvark.
| | 00:58 |
Now these are high quality filters.
Even when I do processing on my iPhone
| | 01:02 |
using the Flicker tools, the filters, and
the editing tools and then I look on my
| | 01:07 |
MacBook Pro Retina display, I'm surprised
at how good it looks.
| | 01:14 |
These are high-quality image editing tools
that do a great job.
| | 01:18 |
So, if you capture a good shot, you can do
some very nice stuff with it.
| | 01:23 |
That one's a little dark and here we are
at Orca.
| | 01:27 |
For like this shot, that's completely
wrong.
| | 01:29 |
It just doesn't work for me at all.
And then, Peacock.
| | 01:33 |
Chinchilla's kind of neat.
Isn't it nice how they do, kind of the old
| | 01:37 |
fashioned film frame there, too?
And then, Orangutan.
| | 01:41 |
That one's not quite right.
So now, what I'm going to do is, is I'm
| | 01:45 |
going to go back and, I kind of like
Mammoth.
| | 01:48 |
I thought that was kind of neat.
And then, of course, you're sitting there
| | 01:53 |
at home going, what?
You're crazy.
| | 01:55 |
Maybe Iguana.
Oh, it's so hard, we'll stick with Iguana
| | 01:59 |
for right now.
It's fun to put your shots in here, or to
| | 02:03 |
take a shot.
And you can apply these filters to images
| | 02:06 |
that you bring in off your camera roll
also.
| | 02:09 |
And then, just look at the different moods
you can create by applying these filters.
| | 02:15 |
Once you're done, then you just hit the
next key right here and it goes to the new step.
| | 02:23 |
What I'm going to do though because we
still have a little bit more work to do,
| | 02:27 |
I'm going to go back to original.
And we're going to do a little image
| | 02:31 |
editing in the next movie.
| | 02:33 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Editing pictures with the Flickr mobile app| 00:00 |
So not only can you apply these wonderful
filters, when you're working in the
| | 00:04 |
Flicker app with your pictures.
You can actually do some fairly serious
| | 00:09 |
image editing by clicking on the Pencil
icon right there.
| | 00:13 |
Let's take a look and see what we have.
I'm going to tap on that right now, and it
| | 00:17 |
loads the Photo Editor, and we have a
whole bunch of tools right there at the bottom.
| | 00:23 |
We actually have three screens of tools,
here's the first set.
| | 00:27 |
Now I'm just going to swipe on them,
here's the second set, and here's the
| | 00:31 |
third set.
Really nice, you can notice how the little
| | 00:34 |
dot changes, so you know where you are.
Let's go back to the first set.
| | 00:38 |
The first set has the stuff that you're
going to use most of the time.
| | 00:43 |
Enhance is an automatic filter that
actually has some sub-filters in it.
| | 00:48 |
And let's just start there, because
sometimes, it can do wonderful things for
| | 00:53 |
your shot, and sometimes it does
absolutely nothing.
| | 00:57 |
If you've used Enhance in other
applications, you know how this works, so
| | 00:59 |
I'm just going to tap on it right now.
See, we have Auto, Night, Backlit, and Balance.
| | 01:07 |
So depending on your situation, most of
the time if people use Enhance you're
| | 01:11 |
going to go ahead and click on Auto.
And in this case, I think we de-enhanced, right?
| | 01:20 |
That's not an improvement at all.
In fact we have taken a step back.
| | 01:24 |
So then, speaking of back, we go up here
to the back arrow, tap on that and say no,
| | 01:30 |
we reject your enhancement.
So, we also have orientation, we're
| | 01:36 |
looking just fine right now, so we don't
need that, we don't need to flip it around
| | 01:39 |
on it's head or anything like that.
We can also Crop, cropping is very
| | 01:44 |
important, I think it's one of the most
important tools in image editing, so let's
| | 01:48 |
tap on that.
And we get the little handles.
| | 01:51 |
Cropping is very fun and easy.
Just grab a handle, drag it and you do
| | 01:55 |
something like that, you go, yes, I like
that.
| | 01:58 |
And just Apply, and if you like it, you
can stick with it, you hit Done, if not,
| | 02:02 |
just hit Cancel.
Go back to our little pencil here, load
| | 02:06 |
the Photo Editor again.
By the way that is the most elegant way to
| | 02:11 |
back out of a crop.
You have Brightness and Contrast also.
| | 02:15 |
Now we have pretty good exposure on these,
so I'll just blow by those.
| | 02:19 |
But if you want to make things brighter or
darker you have Brightness, hit the back
| | 02:23 |
arrow, if you want to make it more
contrast, you have a Contrast slider.
| | 02:28 |
Hit the back arrow again.
So let's slide over to the next group.
| | 02:33 |
Saturation, well, we don't really have a
lot of color here, so that's not going to
| | 02:35 |
do us much good.
But, if you wanted to bump up a landscape
| | 02:38 |
or something like that, you have a
Saturation slider.
| | 02:41 |
Sharpness, be careful with sharpness, when
you have these image editing apps on
| | 02:45 |
mobile devices, sometimes sharpness can
introduce artifacts.
| | 02:51 |
So I don't recommend that you use it
anymore than absolutely necessary.
| | 02:56 |
Drawing is great if you have a stylus,
let's tap on Draw right now.
| | 03:01 |
But if you're just using your big ole
finger it could be less than elegant, but
| | 03:06 |
you do have different pen, so.
But a stylus is much easier with Draw.
| | 03:12 |
So let's just back out of that right now.
You can add Text, and you can even do
| | 03:17 |
Redeye Correction.
Swipe over to the last set, and look at this.
| | 03:23 |
You can even work on portraits here, in
your Flickr mobile app.
| | 03:27 |
Do a little tooth whitening, and remove a
few blemishes, pretty nifty.
| | 03:32 |
Let's just go back to the beginning.
So once you have the image the way that
| | 03:36 |
you want, all you have to do is go back up
here to the blue Done button, tap on that.
| | 03:42 |
And then, if you're happy with the image
the way that it is, you click the Next button.
| | 03:48 |
If not, if you want to play with Filters
or something, you can do that.
| | 03:51 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Adding tags and other metadata with the Flickr app| 00:00 |
So I've had fun playing with the photo.
And I ended up settling on the Aardvark
| | 00:04 |
filter for my image here.
So let's add some Metadatas at Description
| | 00:10 |
tag, all that good stuff.
And to do that, we go up here to the Next
| | 00:15 |
button, tap on it.
And I can add a Title.
| | 00:19 |
So I'll just call this lenses.
I'm not going to go with a Description
| | 00:24 |
right now, we'll just let that be.
I think it describes itself, as a photo
| | 00:30 |
it's self-explanatory.
But if I go down here to Advanced, we can
| | 00:34 |
get to some more goodies, so let me tap on
Advanced right now.
| | 00:39 |
And you see that the all important Tags
are down here.
| | 00:44 |
And I do think those are important, so I'm
going to tap on that, and we will add a tag.
| | 00:53 |
Let's add photography, and then I'm going
to click the Plus button right there, and
| | 00:58 |
we've added a tag.
And I would normally add quite a few more
| | 01:02 |
but this is not a typing lesson, so we'll
just stop right there.
| | 01:08 |
And while we're down here, you can also
see that the Safety Llevel from my photo
| | 01:12 |
is set the Safe.
If you watched the preferences movie and
| | 01:17 |
you know that these are the defaults
settings.
| | 01:20 |
But as I mentioned in that movie, if I
want I can override them for a particular photo.
| | 01:24 |
I just tap on this, you see that I can
override them.
| | 01:28 |
I'm not going to, I'm just going to leave
it as Safe right now.
| | 01:32 |
And I could add it to a set or create a
set, tap on that.
| | 01:38 |
And you see that we have some sets, shall
we add it to Camera Gear?
| | 01:41 |
Want to have some fun with that?
Let's do that.
| | 01:44 |
Just tap on that, and now we'll go back up
here to Done.
| | 01:50 |
And we've added to the set.
So, we're pretty much ready to go.
| | 01:54 |
In the next movie, I'm going to talk a
little bit about the Public, or setting a
| | 01:58 |
different privacy setting for it, and I'll
talk a little bit about Adding a Venue.
| | 02:05 |
So once we do those two things, then we'll
be able to upload our photo.
| | 02:10 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Setting privacy and adding a venue on the Flickr mobile app| 00:00 |
Before I actually upload my photo to my
Flickr account, I have two more things
| | 00:04 |
that I want to do.
I want to check my privacy and then add a venue.
| | 00:11 |
Let's start out by just checking our
privacy, I have it as Public right now
| | 00:14 |
because that was my default, I did that in
settings.
| | 00:18 |
But if I tap on Public, If I wanted to
change the privacy setting, let's say, to
| | 00:22 |
only me, I can do that right now.
I don't.
| | 00:27 |
I want to keep it Public, so I'm just
going to tap on Cancel.
| | 00:30 |
Now, Add a Venue.
In an earlier movie, I mentioned that the
| | 00:34 |
iPhone Geotags images.
And that you can add that to Flickr, so
| | 00:39 |
let's go down here to Add a Venue.
I'm just going to tap on that right now
| | 00:45 |
and look what I found.
Here we are.
| | 00:48 |
Look at this.
Lynda.com HQ.
| | 00:50 |
I want to add that to this.
So, this time I do want it, so I'm just
| | 00:56 |
going to tap on that and look right here.
It's been added to my venue, so I think
| | 01:01 |
we're in pretty good shape right now.
We have a title, we have tags, we've added
| | 01:06 |
it to a set, we've checked our privacy,
we've added a venue...
| | 01:12 |
Let's just go ahead and click on upload,
right here, and add this to our Flickr account.
| | 01:19 |
There we go, and look at that.
We have added a photo that we captured
| | 01:25 |
with our iPhone using all those wonderful
captured tools.
| | 01:29 |
We did a little image editing fun we added
metadata.
| | 01:33 |
Let me just tap on right here.
And now it has become a part of our
| | 01:38 |
Flicker world, so there you go.
That is step one of adding photos via the iPhone.
| | 01:47 |
But guess what, there's still one more
thing we can do which is add photos from
| | 01:51 |
our camera roll and I'm going to tackle
that in our next movie.
| | 01:57 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Adding existing images from your camera roll| 00:00 |
I'm going to show the Camera Roll for just
a minute because that plays a role and how
| | 00:04 |
we can use our mobile Flicker app.
The first thing that I want to show you
| | 00:09 |
and of course that Camera Roll is our
Photos app right here, let me just tap on that.
| | 00:14 |
The reason I want to bring in over here is
because I've set up the Flickr mobile app
| | 00:19 |
so that it records both the original photo
that I took.
| | 00:25 |
And then also saves the edited photo that
I took to my Camera Roll.
| | 00:30 |
I like doing it that way and as you may
recall if you saw an earlier movie, that
| | 00:34 |
is a preference...
But here is the edited shot and I'm just
| | 00:39 |
going to swipe, and there's my original
shot.
| | 00:42 |
And I have both of those, and actually
since I use Photo Stream both of those are
| | 00:47 |
going to go into my iCloud backup.
So, I'm just backed up everywhere.
| | 00:53 |
Now, I'm going to go tap on Camera Roll.
Bring us back to here and I'm going to go
| | 00:58 |
ahead and tap on my Home button.
We're going to open the Flickr app again.
| | 01:04 |
I'm going to tap on my Camera, but instead
of taking a picture, I want to use a
| | 01:08 |
picture for my Camera Roll, so I'm
going to tap on this icon right down here.
| | 01:16 |
And you see that I have all the photos
that are available on my iPhone, available
| | 01:20 |
to me here.
But I'm going to go to my Camera Roll, I'm
| | 01:23 |
going to tap on that.
I'm going to tap on this image right here.
| | 01:29 |
And I'm going to tap on Done.
And there we go.
| | 01:35 |
And now we can do all the usual stuff that
we talked about.
| | 01:39 |
We can apply filters if we want to the
image.
| | 01:43 |
We can edit it.
I tapped on that little pencil there.
| | 01:49 |
Basically, we can treat it just like a
photo that we took.
| | 01:53 |
So, you have access to the images on your
Camera Roll Just as well as the image that
| | 01:57 |
you take with your iPhone.
And then depending on how you have your
| | 02:02 |
preferences set when you do the editing
here, you can have both the original and
| | 02:06 |
the edited shot saved to your phone.
A lot of flexibility.
| | 02:11 |
You set it up the way that works best for
you.
| | 02:13 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Photography with Flickr on Android| 00:00 |
You can take pictures with the app, and we
have a camera icon in the upper right hand
| | 00:05 |
corner here, that will get us started.
I'm going to tap on that right now.
| | 00:11 |
And we have two options.
You can take a new photo.
| | 00:15 |
So, you'll use the built in camera with
your mobile device to do that.
| | 00:19 |
Or you can choose an image that you've
already recorded from your gallery.
| | 00:24 |
We'll do that right now.
I'll tap on Choose From Gallery, and I'll
| | 00:28 |
tap on the Flickr, seven photos, and I'm
going to tap on an image I shot recently
| | 00:33 |
with this camera phone.
Then I will tap on Done.
| | 00:41 |
Once I have the image on my screen, I have
a few options.
| | 00:44 |
We have the Flickr filters that are always
fun.
| | 00:48 |
So, I'll tap on Mammoth, we'll take a
look.
| | 00:53 |
That's kind of neat.
I'll tap on Wallaby.
| | 00:56 |
I'm sliding from right to left as I go
through these filters.
| | 01:01 |
Let's take a look at one more.
How about Salamander?
| | 01:06 |
Yes, see, those are very nice.
I'm going to swipe back to the right.
| | 01:11 |
I'm going to go with Wallaby.
Now, once I've selected my filter, and I
| | 01:18 |
think the Wallaby look, by the way, is
great for kind of the retro looking camera.
| | 01:23 |
I have another option.
We have the pencil icon in the upper right
| | 01:26 |
hand corner.
I'm going to tap on that, and I have some
| | 01:29 |
editing controls, so Enhance Orientation,
Crop, Brightness, Contrast.
| | 01:36 |
I'm going to swipe from right to left.
Saturation, Sharpness, we can Draw, we can
| | 01:41 |
add Text, Redeye reduction.
Swipe one more time from right to left.
| | 01:47 |
Whiten, and Blemish.
Now, if you use the online Flickr editor,
| | 01:51 |
these will be familiar to you.
I'm going to swipe back and we'll play
| | 01:56 |
with brightness for just a moment.
Tap on that.
| | 02:01 |
And I'm going to darken the image a bit.
I'm swiping to the left on the dial.
| | 02:09 |
Darken it just a bit more.
That looks good.
| | 02:12 |
Then, I'll tap the Apply button, then I'll
tap the Done button to exit the editor.
| | 02:21 |
It'll save my image and apply the filter.
I think we're all ready to go image wise.
| | 02:28 |
So now, let's add a little meta data.
I'll tap Next.
| | 02:32 |
Here, I can add title and description.
We'll just make it a simple title.
| | 02:36 |
I'll type Camera.
Once I tap the Upload button, it will go
| | 02:42 |
directly to my photostream.
And if I want to share on other social
| | 02:47 |
networking sites at the same time, I can
by tapping on the Facebook, Twitter,
| | 02:52 |
Tumblr, or send via e-mail.
So, you can publish in multiple spots at
| | 02:59 |
the same time.
I think we're all ready to go.
| | 03:03 |
So, I'll tap the Upload button and we'll
add this to our Flickr photostream.

3. Exploring and Sharing with the Flickr Mobile AppFollowing your contacts via the Flickr mobile app| 00:00 |
One of the things that I enjoy about the
Flickr mobile app is following my Contacts.
| | 00:05 |
And it's really great, cause I have the
iPhone in my pocket, I've got a few spare
| | 00:08 |
minutes, I can see what my photographer
friends are up to.
| | 00:12 |
So let's take a look at how that works.
Now, the Contacts area is right here,
| | 00:17 |
where you have the little people.
But before we explore that, I just want to
| | 00:23 |
review on one of the ways that you can add
to this area.
| | 00:28 |
So we're going to go back to the two dots
for a second, we're going to go to the
| | 00:31 |
More menu, and I'm going to go up here to
Search.
| | 00:34 |
And we're going to search for people, and
I'm just going to search for, so one that
| | 00:39 |
I really like, oh, look at this.
Jim's a terrific photographer, and he
| | 00:46 |
works here at lynda.com.
But I even knew him before then, so I like
| | 00:51 |
his photography a lot, so I'm going to go
ahead and tap on the Add button, and now
| | 00:56 |
he's a contact.
Great, Okay.
| | 01:00 |
So that's an easy way to add someone that
you know already to your contacts.
| | 01:05 |
So, now I'm going to go ahead and hit the
Back arrow, let's go to the Contacts area,
| | 01:08 |
which is right down here, just tap on
that.
| | 01:12 |
And we have the digital story, we have
Samara, but we don't have Jim here.
| | 01:19 |
Well, the way that you refresh is that you
just pull down like this and that will
| | 01:22 |
refresh the screen, so let's do that.
We'll just pull down and look at that.
| | 01:28 |
It reloads, and now Jim has been added to
our (LAUGH) party.
| | 01:34 |
Oh, see now when you photograph animals,
you're suppose to get down low for great shots.
| | 01:40 |
This is a perfect example of that good
technique, and this is why I like Jim as a photographer.
| | 01:47 |
And here's Samara, my friends like dogs,
(INAUDIBLE) knows that.
| | 01:50 |
So if you want to see what your contacts
are up to you go to this area right there
| | 01:54 |
and again we tapped on this right here.
And then you can just see the latest shots
| | 02:00 |
they have been doing.
Derek has been on kind of an outdoor geek
| | 02:05 |
thing lately, and Jim has been up to a
little bit of everything, he's very eclectic.
| | 02:13 |
Samara, she loves her doggies and nature.
And then we go down one more, and oh,
| | 02:19 |
wait, I don't know this person.
Well, this is what Flickr will do.
| | 02:24 |
If you don't have a lot of contacts in the
beginning, they'll suggest people.
| | 02:28 |
So, that way you can have a full party,
right?
| | 02:31 |
You don't have a party with just one
person.
| | 02:33 |
I'm curious about the shot, so I can just
tap on this photo right here.
| | 02:38 |
And that will take me to his photo page,
and if I decide, wow, this is pretty good
| | 02:43 |
photography, or I'm interested.
Then I can just tap right up here, on his name.
| | 02:51 |
We'll see his photostream, you've got some
great stuff.
| | 02:55 |
And if I want to add him as a contact I
will just tap on the Add button right there.
| | 03:01 |
So it's really that easy, I'm going to go
back to Contacts, tap right there.
| | 03:08 |
Now there's one other place I want to show
you where contacts show up, and we're
| | 03:12 |
actually going to be talking about our
photostream in a bit.
| | 03:16 |
So I'm going to go right over here, tap on
this, go to photostream, and you notice
| | 03:21 |
that we have contacts up here.
Let's see if I can refresh that, just
| | 03:27 |
going to pull that down.
So we refresh, and look, our new contacts
| | 03:31 |
are right here.
So I can tap on this and we get a list of
| | 03:36 |
our contacts and so then I can just tap on
that person if I want to go directly to
| | 03:41 |
their photostream.
So that's a nice look at contacts and how
| | 03:49 |
you can keep in touch with your friends.
Very easy with a mobile app, I love it.
| | 03:56 |
Just remember that the main area is right
down here and that you can also see them
| | 04:01 |
in your Photostream.
| | 04:04 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Managing your photostream on the Flickr mobile app| 00:00 |
The command central for me in the Flickr
app is the photo stream page and you get
| | 00:05 |
to that by going right here.
That's me right there, that little icon,
| | 00:11 |
so I'm going to tap on that and we're
going to navigate around this page for
| | 00:14 |
just a bit.
So, true to it's name, we do actually have
| | 00:19 |
a photo stream right here.
Here's our photostream that we have been
| | 00:23 |
working on.
And you have two ways that you can look at it.
| | 00:27 |
Right now we are in thumbnail mode, but if
you go up here, and click on this icon,
| | 00:32 |
you can look at it in List mode.
And you get a little bit more information.
| | 00:38 |
You some activity that's going on with
that.
| | 00:41 |
Generally speaking, I like looking at the
thumbnails, so I'm going to tap on that
| | 00:46 |
icon again and look at the thumbnails.
Now, you also notice that we have some
| | 00:52 |
tabs right here, and the first tab to the
far left is our sets tab.
| | 00:58 |
I'm going to tap on that.
And here we get to see the sets that we've
| | 01:03 |
established, and if we tap on any set, we
can actually look inside of it.
| | 01:09 |
So, I'm going to tap back on the arrow,
tap on the back arrow again.
| | 01:15 |
And move over to groups.
So, if you've joined any groups, this will
| | 01:18 |
light up, it's blue right now.
It means I have a group that I've joined.
| | 01:23 |
So, I'm going to tap on groups and what a
shocker, I have joined the digital story.
| | 01:29 |
And so that's listed here.
And if I tap on this, that will take me
| | 01:34 |
over to the photos from that group.
And so, the more groups you add, the
| | 01:39 |
longer this list gets.
Let's go back to the back arrow.
| | 01:45 |
We have more tabs to cover.
Now, if you've marked any photos as
| | 01:49 |
favorites and that's by tapping on the
star by looking at the photo, then you can
| | 01:54 |
tap right here on the favorites tab.
And sort of like, your collection of
| | 02:00 |
favorite photos.
So, as your out hanging out in Flickr,
| | 02:04 |
looking at stuff and you go, I really like
that shot.
| | 02:07 |
For instance this lovely shot of Jim's
dog.
| | 02:11 |
You'll notice that I have tapped the star
right there.
| | 02:15 |
And that will add it to my favorites.
So, now I'm going to tap the back arrow
| | 02:21 |
again, our favorites and then photos of
yes yours truly.
| | 02:27 |
Photos of, I'm going to tap on that right
now.
| | 02:31 |
You can add yourself if you want photos of
you, I know it sounds sort of funny,
| | 02:35 |
photos of me.
But we get things were people go hey,
| | 02:38 |
could you send me a photo to go with this
blog post that I'm doing?
| | 02:42 |
Or whatever.
It's nice to have them collected.
| | 02:46 |
And of course, the way that you add a
photo of you, I'm just going to tap on
| | 02:49 |
this here.
When you have a photo view in your photo
| | 02:53 |
stream or somewhere on your camera and you
bring it into Flickr, what you have to do
| | 02:57 |
is you have to go up here to the I icon.
Tap on that and then you go down here to
| | 03:04 |
people in this Photo.
You tap on that and then you take it.
| | 03:10 |
And that's the way that that happens.
So, when you put your name on there, then
| | 03:14 |
it will show up, if it's your account, it
will show up back here.
| | 03:19 |
We're working our way all the way back.
It will show up here in Photos Of.
| | 03:26 |
So, this is in my name.
I tagged it with my name and then it shows
| | 03:30 |
up right here.
So, yes, you can have your own I love me
| | 03:34 |
gallery right here in the Flicker mobile
app.
| | 03:38 |
And then finally the last tab that we
want to take a look at is contacts.
| | 03:42 |
And this is that list of contacts that we
had talked about in a previous movie.
| | 03:47 |
And if you want to see what they're doing.
Of course, you could just tap on that and
| | 03:51 |
you go right over to their page, just like
that.
| | 03:55 |
So, I'm going to tap on the back arrow,
back arrow again.
| | 03:59 |
So, this is our photo stream page, it's
really nice.
| | 04:02 |
There's a lot of stuff going on here and
in the next movie I'm going to talk a
| | 04:06 |
little bit about how you can monitor the
activity of both your photos and your contacts.
| | 04:12 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Keeping track of activity on the Flickr mobile app| 00:00 |
While we're over here in the Photostream
area, I want to show you Activity.
| | 00:05 |
And I actually really enjoy this part of
Flickr.
| | 00:07 |
This is the social part.
So I'm going to tap on this tab right now.
| | 00:11 |
And there's a couple thing you get to see
here.
| | 00:14 |
If someone comments on one of your photos,
as happened here, you get the photo and
| | 00:19 |
you get to see the comment.
You also can see if someone added you as a contact.
| | 00:26 |
Just basic what's going on with
interactions around your Flickr account,
| | 00:30 |
all happen here in the Activity tab.
Now of course, we manually check this by
| | 00:36 |
tapping on Activity right here.
But if you want, you can also setup
| | 00:40 |
notifications, so you can find out in real
time as this goes on.
| | 00:45 |
And the way to do that, is go back down
here to the More menu.
| | 00:49 |
Tap on Notifications, and you'll see it.
Look at this, all these things that you
| | 00:57 |
can turn on, so that you can find out in
real time when stuff is happening
| | 01:01 |
pertaining to your Flickr account.
So that's in the More menu, right here.
| | 01:07 |
We're going to go back to our
Photostream/Activity page by tapping on
| | 01:12 |
this icon, and there you go.
And I have to tell you, again, I hardly
| | 01:17 |
ever check this, when they're wasn't a
Flickr mobile app.
| | 01:21 |
When I just had the computer and now that
I have this on my iPhone, I'm following it
| | 01:25 |
all the time and it's a blast.
So, Activity Tab on the Photostream page.
| | 01:32 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Viewing EXIF data| 00:00 |
One of the very nice things that the
mobile app does is that it shows you the
| | 00:05 |
xf data for images.
Now, you may be wondering, well, what is
| | 00:10 |
that, Derrick?
Well, let me show you because the name is
| | 00:13 |
not super alluring, but the functionality
is wonderful.
| | 00:19 |
So I'm just going to tap on a photo here.
And we'll bring it up, and then what I'm
| | 00:23 |
going to do is I'm going to go up here to
the info button, and I'm going to tap on that.
| | 00:29 |
And look at all this cool stuff that you
get.
| | 00:32 |
So, you find out the camera that is was
captured with, what the shutter speed was,
| | 00:36 |
what the ISO was set to.
What the lens focal length was, what the
| | 00:42 |
f-top, and that the flash was turned off.
You have all that right there.
| | 00:48 |
And then, if you go down here to
additional information, look at this, all
| | 00:53 |
of this information about that photo.
So, as long as you don't accidentally
| | 01:00 |
strip it out before you upload it, or if
you're viewing someone else's photo.
| | 01:05 |
As long as they don't strip it out.
You have a ton of information.
| | 01:09 |
And what's nice about this, if you see an
image that you like, and you go, wow how
| | 01:13 |
did he do that?
Or how did she do that?
| | 01:17 |
This is one of the ways that you can
figure that out.
| | 01:20 |
Now, I'm going to tap on the back arrow to
go back.
| | 01:24 |
That was under additional information.
You get the basic stuff up here, the real
| | 01:28 |
detailed stuff down here.
And just, while we're in the screen
| | 01:32 |
anyway, look at this, our tags show up
here also.
| | 01:37 |
So, very nice stuff.
Let me hit the back arrow, and all of that
| | 01:40 |
is under the info button right in the
upper right hand corner there.
| | 01:45 |
Just a wealth of the information about the
photo that you're looking at
| | 01:49 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Marking favorites| 00:00 |
We're going to talk about Favorites for a
moment, and being on the receiving end of
| | 00:04 |
favorites is terrific.
It feels good because it's an easy way for
| | 00:07 |
other photographers to let you know they
like what you did with a photograph.
| | 00:12 |
And it's also nice to give that feedback
to other photographers, and in the mobile
| | 00:17 |
app, it's very easy to do.
I actually love this functionality they
| | 00:22 |
built in.
So, I'm looking at our Contacts here, and
| | 00:25 |
I'm scrolling through the shot.
Now some of these have been marked as
| | 00:30 |
favorites already, for instance this
really cool shot by Jim Heid.
| | 00:35 |
And you can tell by the Flickr pink star,
that's very distinctive.
| | 00:41 |
I'm scrolling down here.
Now, here's a shot by Samara, her doggy,
| | 00:45 |
that I really like.
So, all I'm going to do is just double tap
| | 00:49 |
right here on the photograph, with my
finger.
| | 00:53 |
And you'll see the indication that I've
marked it as a Favorite, and then it will
| | 00:57 |
actually become a favorite.
So, let's do it right now.
| | 01:01 |
I'm going to double tap, and boom just
like that.
| | 01:05 |
It's really easy to do.
So now you can just scroll through shots
| | 01:09 |
from your contacts, from, when you're
exploring Flicker.
| | 01:14 |
People that you don't necessarily know
their work before, and you see something
| | 01:17 |
you like.
All you have to do is double tap on the
| | 01:20 |
photo to mark it as a Favorite.
I love that functionality, I think it's terrific.
| | 01:25 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Exploring and sharing with Flickr on Android| 00:00 |
So, what we're going to do now is explore
outside of our own personal photo universe
| | 00:05 |
and see what our contacts are doing and
even other users on Flickr.
| | 00:10 |
I'm here on the photostream screen right
now.
| | 00:13 |
What I'm going to do is tap on the hard
return arrow on the device.
| | 00:19 |
And it reveals this menu right here.
And you'll see at the top of the menu we
| | 00:24 |
have Contacts, Groups, Explore, and
Activity.
| | 00:28 |
If I tap on Contacts, we can see what our
contacts have been up to.
| | 00:34 |
And, if I tap on, let's say, the flower
shot at the top, we get a little bit more
| | 00:38 |
information about it.
I'm going to tap on the screen again to
| | 00:43 |
bring that information back.
And you notice there's a slideshow button
| | 00:47 |
in the upper right hand corner.
I can play a slideshow of the images from
| | 00:51 |
that contact, the recent images.
I'm now going to hit the hard return arrow.
| | 00:59 |
Bring us back to our screen.
And I'm going to slide upward with my finger.
| | 01:05 |
You notice there are some recommended.
So, if I don't have a lot of contacts, I
| | 01:09 |
can look at some of the photographers that
Flickr suggests maybe I'd enjoy.
| | 01:16 |
And if I like their work, I can add them
as a contact.
| | 01:20 |
I'll tap on an image right now.
This one has 44 favorites.
| | 01:25 |
You can see that down in the corner there,
button next to that is the Share button,
| | 01:30 |
so I could share that image if I wanted
to.
| | 01:34 |
Hit the hard back arrow.
There are seven comments on this, and I
| | 01:39 |
could add my own comment if I wish.
Hit the hard back arrow.
| | 01:44 |
I'm going to tap on the i and get some
information about this.
| | 01:50 |
Tap the hard back arrow.
I tapped the photographer's name to go to
| | 01:56 |
the Photostream.
I'm going to tap on the plus and I have
| | 02:02 |
now added this photographer as a contact.
I'm going to tap the hard back arrow at
| | 02:08 |
the bottom, and we will go backwards.
I'll tap the hard back arrow again.
| | 02:14 |
Now, I'm going to tap on the Soft menu
button in the upper left hand corner.
| | 02:20 |
We can explore any groups that we may be
members of.
| | 02:22 |
Tap on that.
The groups that we're members of will
| | 02:28 |
appear, and then if I swipe upward, I'll
get recommended groups also.
| | 02:33 |
I'm going to tap on the Soft menu button.
Let's go to Explore where we can explore
| | 02:39 |
the vast Flickr universe.
And we can see images by other photographers.
| | 02:46 |
And again, we might see something that we
like or a style that we appreciate and we
| | 02:50 |
may want to add that photographer to our
contacts.
| | 02:56 |
Tap on the Soft menu button again on the
upper left hand corner.
| | 03:01 |
And finally, there's activity, tap on
that.
| | 03:05 |
And here we can see comments from other
people, favs that have been marked.
| | 03:12 |
And if someone added us as a contact, we
can return the favor by clicking on the
| | 03:17 |
plus icon.
I'm now going to tap on the Soft menu
| | 03:22 |
button in the upper left-hand corner.
And I'm going to tap on the lynda training
| | 03:28 |
icon, and we're back in our own
photostream where our shots are.
| | 03:34 |
So, there is lots for you to explore.
Once you've uploaded some of your shots,
| | 03:39 |
you may want to see what other people are
doing and follow their work too.

4. Getting Started Using a Computer Creating your Flickr account| 00:00 |
We're going to sign up for Flickr.
We're going to get a Flickr account and
| | 00:03 |
we're going to do it together.
So, it's pretty easy.
| | 00:07 |
I'm at Flickr.com.
I don't have a Flickr account in this
| | 00:09 |
particular browser, and I just look for
the big flashing sign right here, Sign up
| | 00:13 |
for Flickr, and I'm going to click on
this.
| | 00:16 |
Now, there's a few different ways you can
sign up for Flickr.
| | 00:20 |
You can sign up with your Google account,
let me click on that and fill in your
| | 00:25 |
Google information, that of course makes
Google happy.
| | 00:31 |
And you can sign in via your Facebook
account.
| | 00:37 |
But Flickr is owned by Yahoo and actually,
I think the best experience is to go ahead
| | 00:41 |
and set up a Yahoo account if you don't
have one already.
| | 00:45 |
And that's what we're going to do right
now.
| | 00:47 |
So, we're going to create a new account.
So, I want to set up a Flickr account for
| | 00:53 |
Nimble Photographer.
And that could be your name.
| | 00:59 |
It could be any number of things.
And now, when I click down here.
| | 01:03 |
Look, I get some suggestions.
So, first of all, this is good news.
| | 01:08 |
No one has taken this before.
So, I'm going to choose nimblephotgrapher@yahoo.com.
| | 01:14 |
So, I'm going to choose this.
Now, I'm going to pick a password.
| | 01:19 |
And I get rated on my password selection,
not bad I get a 3 out of 4 there, I have
| | 01:24 |
to type it again.
Now, they want to know something about me,
| | 01:31 |
so I'm a Gemini.
I speak English.
| | 01:43 |
There's your basic stuff.
And then, they want your mobile phone in
| | 01:48 |
case there's a problem and they also would
like an alternate e-mail so I'm going to
| | 01:53 |
give them that right now.
Now, if you don't want to give your mobile
| | 01:59 |
phone, let's see what happens here.
Let's go ahead and create our account.
| | 02:02 |
Probably is a good idea one last time
before you hit the yellow button just to
| | 02:05 |
make sure that everything looks okay.
Yeah, I think we're alright.
| | 02:12 |
Okay, now we have to do our secret
questions.
| | 02:15 |
We're almost done.
So, our secret question, what is the first
| | 02:18 |
name of my favorite uncle?
Where did I spend my childhood summers?
| | 02:26 |
Okay.
And they're still kind of pressing on the
| | 02:31 |
mobile phone thing.
Let's see if we can get by without doing it.
| | 02:35 |
And then, everyone's favorite exercise
here.
| | 02:38 |
And we type and Done.
And it is required so you cannot get by
| | 02:45 |
without your mobile phone number.
Now we'll click Done.
| | 02:53 |
Look at this, we're all set up.
And it's got all our information here.
| | 02:57 |
And now, all I have to do is click on the
Get Started button.
| | 03:05 |
They're just reiterating here that our
name will be and that our username will be
| | 03:08 |
nimble photographer, and that we can
change these any time in our account
| | 03:11 |
settings, which is cool.
And we're actually going to explore that
| | 03:15 |
stuff by the way.
And now, it brings us to our Flickr home page.
| | 03:21 |
By the way, up here at the top you get to
see the blue area where Flickr likes to
| | 03:25 |
let you know what's going on.
They'll put little notices and things up there.
| | 03:31 |
In this case, I get one free terabyte of
space.
| | 03:34 |
And the other thing that I get since I
have set up a free account, we're going to
| | 03:38 |
talk about the different levels of
account.
| | 03:42 |
The free account is that I also get ads.
But there is a way to get rid of those ads
| | 03:46 |
and we'll talk about that in an upcoming
movie.
| | 03:49 |
But we're started and this is the first
step towards setting up your own Flickr universe.
| | 03:55 |

| Exploring the homepage| 00:00 |
Here we are at the Flickr Home page, and
you get here by clicking on the flickr
| | 00:05 |
icon right here, and you're home.
Now it's personalized for you though, and
| | 00:12 |
right now we're taking a look at my page
of the digital story.
| | 00:17 |
Because frankly I have more stuff going on
than with the Training Home page.
| | 00:22 |
So it's a lot easier for me to show you
activity.
| | 00:25 |
Down the middle here, the big pictures,
these are my contacts.
| | 00:29 |
These are people that I follow, and they
have been a busy bunch.
| | 00:33 |
Look at all this good stuff here.
So I get to take a look at what's going on
| | 00:37 |
with my contacts down this little thing,
and.
| | 00:41 |
There are additional pictures that in this
case were uploaded at the same time.
| | 00:45 |
So I have the main shot, but then I can
see more stuff, little thumbnails there.
| | 00:50 |
And as I keep going here, you'll notice
that we have this right here.
| | 00:54 |
So someone added me as a contact.
I have the opportunity to add them back as
| | 00:59 |
a contact, and they get notified of that
right here, in amongst my contact activity.
| | 01:05 |
So, that's very nice.
Now, on the right side here, let's go back
| | 01:09 |
up, here are my groups right here.
And now if I'm a member of more than one
| | 01:14 |
group, this will rotate.
And then there are Explore right here.
| | 01:20 |
Now, this could be a number of things.
This could be, explore the latest editor's
| | 01:24 |
picks by Flickr.
It could be the comments, it could be all
| | 01:28 |
sorts of goodies.
So you'll never know what you get here.
| | 01:31 |
And if you Refresh, you might get
something else, the Flickr Blog.
| | 01:35 |
So you can keep up on the world of Flickr
and then people I may know.
| | 01:39 |
So, if there are folks that I may know and
I want to add them as a contact, I'm
| | 01:43 |
always presented with that opportunity
right here.
| | 01:48 |
Now, the last thing I want to show you
before we leave our Home page, is that if
| | 01:52 |
I wave over my buddy icon up there.
Then I have the opportunity to change my
| | 01:57 |
settings, check my mail, get help or sign
out.
| | 02:00 |
That's this little icon right here.
And that will be consistent and then the
| | 02:03 |
Nav bar, which we will be exploring in
upcoming movies, allows us to do things
| | 02:07 |
like go directly to our photostream.
Explore our Contacts more or manage them,
| | 02:13 |
look at Communities, Explore the world of
Flicker.
| | 02:17 |
And of course Upload photos so that we can
add our own stuff here.
| | 02:21 |
So this is the Flickr Home page it's
personalized for us.
| | 02:25 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Adding contacts| 00:00 |
A big part of the fun, I think, with
Flickr as a social site, where you get to
| | 00:04 |
see what your friends and family, what
they're posting.
| | 00:09 |
And, you know, Flickr makes that easy,
especially with the new design, where you
| | 00:12 |
get to see what's going on right here on
your Flickr homepage.
| | 00:16 |
But if you don't have any contacts yet,
you don't really get to see what your
| | 00:19 |
friends are up to.
So, there's a couple of ways that you can
| | 00:23 |
go about adding contacts to your Flicker
account.
| | 00:27 |
One is when you have a new account like
this one here, they make suggestions for you.
| | 00:32 |
And you'll see that, as I look at these
pictures, if I think they're really neat.
| | 00:36 |
Wow, I like close-up photography, so then
I can go ahead and add this person as
| | 00:41 |
contact right here, and then they will
become part of this page.
| | 00:47 |
Now, you can also go up here to contacts,
and you can go to add contacts.
| | 00:53 |
And you have a number of options.
You can import contacts from the different
| | 00:58 |
social lives that you have right here.
And all you have to do is just click on
| | 01:03 |
any of these.
And you can bring them all right in.
| | 01:09 |
I generally don't do that, but that's how
you do it if that's what you want to do.
| | 01:15 |
You can also search for people that are
already on Flickr.
| | 01:18 |
So, if you know you have friends on
Flickr, you can search for them and add
| | 01:21 |
them individually.
Or if you have people that you would like
| | 01:25 |
to be on Flickr, so that you guys can
share photography.
| | 01:30 |
You can go up here and send invites to
those folks, just like that.
| | 01:35 |
And 1, 2, so then they will get an invite
in the mail.
| | 01:39 |
So, you have different ways to add folks,
you can add folks you don't know but you
| | 01:43 |
like their photography.
You can add folks who aren't apart of the
| | 01:47 |
Flickr universe by sending them invites or
you can search for people that you know
| | 01:50 |
are on Flicker and add them that way.
Either way, it's nice to get a few
| | 01:56 |
contacts, so that you can see other
people's photography on your Flicker
| | 01:59 |
homepage when you log in.
| | 02:02 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Opting for ad-free| 00:00 |
So, I've setup a new account and it's a
freebie, and that's terrific.
| | 00:04 |
And I, I get a whole terabyte of space
that doesn't cost me anything, share my
| | 00:08 |
photos in full resolution.
And I have ads, and this is actually one
| | 00:13 |
of the more attractive ads.
You will see ads there that you may not
| | 00:17 |
like as much.
So, if you decide that you want to get rid
| | 00:21 |
of ads, Flickr will accommodate you.
You go up to your icon here, and mouse
| | 00:26 |
over it.
And you will see two options.
| | 00:30 |
Add more space, and Go Ad Free.
Let's Go Ad Free.
| | 00:34 |
I'm going to click on that.
And here are our options.
| | 00:39 |
For $49.99 a year, I can remove the ads, I
still keep all the other benefits.
| | 00:46 |
So, it's basically $50 a year to get rid
of ads.
| | 00:49 |
I still have the 1 terabyte of storage
space.
| | 00:52 |
Or if I just don't know what to do with my
money, I can double and get an additional
| | 00:57 |
1 terabyte of space.
That's a total of 2 terabytes of space for
| | 01:06 |
$499.99 a year.
So basically, I think most people that
| | 01:11 |
want to get rid of the ads will go this
way here for $49.99 a year.
| | 01:16 |
And that is renewable annually.
So, if you want to do that, then you go
| | 01:20 |
ahead and click OK, remove ads.
And you'll verify your stuff, and they'll
| | 01:25 |
walk you through the process of setting up
how you're going to pay for this.
| | 01:31 |
Now, what if you're an existing pro
account?
| | 01:34 |
Because, remember that's the way it was
before, for 24.99 a year, let's go down
| | 01:39 |
here, I have this all set up.
I have a Pro account, personally.
| | 01:45 |
And we set up a Pro account here for our
lynda training, we have that, that renews
| | 01:51 |
on July 15, 2013.
For those of you that have Pro accounts
| | 01:56 |
already, if you renew, you will continue
to receive those pro benefits at that price.
| | 02:02 |
So basically, at half the price of the
49.99 a year, you have unlimited storage,
| | 02:07 |
you get the new goodies, being able to
upload full-resolution photos, longer
| | 02:11 |
videos and all that, for 24.99 a year as
long as you don't let your pro account lapse.
| | 02:19 |
Now, the thing that you'll lose you don't
get the Pro badge anymore because
| | 02:22 |
technically Pro accounts are going away.
So, if you have a Pro account, you have a deal.
| | 02:28 |
You're in for half price.
And if you're a regular Flickr user, I
| | 02:33 |
suggest that you probably want to hang on
to that.
| | 02:36 |
Otherwise, if you're a new user, then
you're going to have to go with the new program.
| | 02:42 |
And either live with the ads or pony up
the 49.99 a year.
| | 02:48 |

5. Specifying Settings for Your AccountEditing your personal information| 00:00 |
Here I am in the Account Settings, making
sure that Flickr is set up the way that I want.
| | 00:05 |
So, we'll take them tab by tab, there are
four tabs.
| | 00:08 |
Now, the way that you get to that is you
go up to your icon, right up here, and go
| | 00:12 |
down to Settings.
Right here, here's where our settings are located.
| | 00:19 |
Now, you know, so we have four tabs here,
Personal Information, Privacy, Emails,
| | 00:22 |
Sharing & Extending.
We're going to focus on Personal
| | 00:25 |
Information right now.
So, we're reminded that we're signed in as
| | 00:30 |
a nimble photographer in this particular
account here, and we're also reminded that
| | 00:35 |
we have a Flickr account where we get a
free terabyte of space, but we also get ads.
| | 00:41 |
So, that set up there.
Our safety level, we actually don't set that.
| | 00:45 |
Flickr sets that.
So, after we start uploading some
| | 00:48 |
pictures, the editors at Flickr will take
a look at our account.
| | 00:54 |
More often than not, we will be deemed as
safe.
| | 00:56 |
Which means that, you know, we just have
regular photos there.
| | 00:59 |
Flickr editors may apply a different
level, so that people are warned and, so
| | 01:03 |
they're not shocked.
So, they don't come to a page and go, oh,
| | 01:07 |
that wasn't really what I was looking for.
But for most folks with normal
| | 01:12 |
photography, this will change to safe once
you start uploading some photos and Flickr
| | 01:17 |
has a chance to look at it.
You're assigned a buddy icon when you sign
| | 01:23 |
up for your account, but you can put any
icon that you want there.
| | 01:27 |
You can either upload from your Flickr
photos or you can upload from your computer.
| | 01:31 |
And you do that by clicking on the edit
button.
| | 01:35 |
You can also edit your screen name.
Which is kind of cool.
| | 01:39 |
I happen to like the one we've chose here,
so I will leave that.
| | 01:42 |
But if I change my mind, I also click on
the edit button right there.
| | 01:46 |
Now, as for our profile, if we want more
information about us, then we can click on
| | 01:53 |
edit right here.
And you can describe yourself.
| | 01:59 |
So, you can add as much information as you
are comfortable with, right here.
| | 02:04 |
And then, of course, you can always change
it later, if you decide that you don't
| | 02:08 |
want to be quite so sharey with your
personal stuff.
| | 02:12 |
Now your Flickr addresses, this is super
important, I think, and I'm going to click
| | 02:16 |
on this right now.
So, when you want to share your account
| | 02:22 |
with other people and what I mean by that
is say, hey, go look at my photos on
| | 02:26 |
Flickr and you send them a URL.
This is the URL that we're talking about.
| | 02:32 |
It's flicker.com/photos/ whatever you put
here.
| | 02:34 |
Now, most folks will put their account
name here so.
| | 02:42 |
For example, I would probably enter nimble
photographer here, because that's what my
| | 02:46 |
account is called, but I could enter
something else if I wanted.
| | 02:51 |
Here's the thing though, that this is a
one shot deal, that you cannot change this
| | 02:56 |
later, so once you set this up for this
account, this is what it will be.
| | 03:01 |
So, think about it but I do encourage you
to do it, because it's very nice having a
| | 03:06 |
single URL to send people to when you want
them to see what you're doing on Flickr.
| | 03:14 |
You can also manage your Yahoo account
here if you signed in that way.
| | 03:19 |
And then, of course, if you'd like to, you
can delete your Flickr account and you do
| | 03:22 |
that right here.
So, these are the basic Personal
| | 03:27 |
Information settings right here.
Think about it, enter the stuff that
| | 03:32 |
you're comfortable with, and then if you
change your mind later, you can always
| | 03:36 |
come back to this tab and make those
adjustments.
| | 03:40 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Specifying privacy and permissions settings| 00:00 |
The second tab under your account is
Privacy & Permissions and there is a quite
| | 00:04 |
a bit of stuff here.
I think before you delve into it though,
| | 00:09 |
it's worth thinking about what does Flickr
mean to you?
| | 00:13 |
Is it about sharing photos?
Is it about having the world see your
| | 00:17 |
photography and your contacts and your
friends and all that?
| | 00:22 |
Or, is it something that is more private
to you.
| | 00:26 |
Now, it's basic design is sharing, I mean,
that's one of the things that Flickr does,
| | 00:29 |
it allows photographers to share photos.
So, what we're looking at here, these are
| | 00:34 |
the default settings.
Now, you can change these, but the default
| | 00:38 |
settings are pretty much set up for
sharing your images with the world.
| | 00:43 |
Now, you can tighten that down a bit if
you want, and let's just take a quick look
| | 00:47 |
at how you can do that.
Who can access your original image files?
| | 00:52 |
By default, it's anyone.
If you don't want just anyone who comes
| | 00:56 |
onto Flickr to be able to access your
original shots, you can change that.
| | 01:00 |
We have these different levels.
The Flickr member, so they have to be a
| | 01:04 |
member of Flickr before they can get to
your origin files.
| | 01:07 |
Or you can tighten it down even more to
just people you establish as your
| | 01:11 |
contacts, friends and family, or only you.
It's up to you on all that, and a lot of
| | 01:16 |
these settings will kind of go down that
road.
| | 01:21 |
The largest shared image size.
Again, you can hit the Edit button, so
| | 01:25 |
that you have options.
So, if you don't want shared images to be
| | 01:29 |
that big, let's say, I'm going to share my
images with the world.
| | 01:33 |
I just don't want to share big ones.
They only get 1024.
| | 01:36 |
You can configure that, right here.
Allow others to share your stuff.
| | 01:42 |
I definitely think that should be a yes,
because that viral nature is one way that
| | 01:46 |
you can get your photography in front of
other people.
| | 01:51 |
Who can add you to a photo, in other words
who can tag you in a photo.
| | 01:55 |
And in this case, the default is any
Flickr member, but you can change that.
| | 02:00 |
Who can print your photos.
Now, they tighten that down a bit, so they
| | 02:05 |
have it so that not just anyone can print
your photos.
| | 02:09 |
And you can make that only you if you
wish.
| | 02:13 |
You don't want anyone printing unless it's
you.
| | 02:16 |
So, that one is one that people will tend
to tighten down a bit.
| | 02:23 |
Go back to Privacy.
Okay lets keep going here.
| | 02:26 |
There's still more stuff here.
Allow your stuff to be added to a gallery.
| | 02:31 |
Now, galleries are collections that Flickr
members put together of stuff generally
| | 02:35 |
speaking that they like or that find
inspiring.
| | 02:39 |
And I would definitely have that set as a
yes.
| | 02:41 |
Because being added to someone's gallery
is a, is a real compliment.
| | 02:45 |
And it's a good way to get, again, your
photos in front of other photographers.
| | 02:51 |
Your XF data, that is, things like your
shutter speed, your aperture setting, the
| | 02:55 |
type of camera that you use.
That data travels with the photo and that
| | 03:00 |
can be displayed, it is by default
displayed in Flickr.
| | 03:05 |
If you don't want people to see your XF
data you can change that, and also showing
| | 03:09 |
which application you used for uploading.
You can go through the Flickr uploader or
| | 03:15 |
you can go through Lightroom, Aperature,
iPhoto, apps like that.
| | 03:20 |
So, that information is displayed, if you
want to change that, you can do that.
| | 03:24 |
Hide your stuff from public searches.
Again, I would say no, I mean unless you
| | 03:29 |
just don't want the big world to see your
photography, then I would leave this as
| | 03:33 |
its default setting.
Hide your profile from public searches.
| | 03:38 |
Again, and you know that's up to you, it's
a personal matter, if you want to change
| | 03:42 |
it though, you can click on that Edit
button.
| | 03:47 |
Who can see what on your profile, and
again you can make all of these
| | 03:49 |
selections, you can tighten that down
quite a bit.
| | 03:54 |
Now, making your photos eligible for
invitation by Getty images.
| | 03:58 |
There's a part of Getty that does stock
photography, and editors at Getty will
| | 04:02 |
say, you know, that would be a nice image
to be part of Getty.
| | 04:08 |
And you have control over that
conversation can even get started or not.
| | 04:12 |
I'm actually going to click on the Edit
button here so that you can see your options.
| | 04:16 |
Think about this.
If you don't want your images to be
| | 04:19 |
offered through Getty, then I would
probably tighten that down right here.
| | 04:27 |
Let's get on back down here.
And then, you have some defaults for new uploads.
| | 04:32 |
So, in other words, when you bring photos
up to Flickr, who can see them, who can
| | 04:35 |
comment on them, who can add notes to
them, just by default.
| | 04:40 |
Now, you can change that on a photo by
photo basis, but you don't want to have to
| | 04:43 |
set that up every time.
So, decide how you want those settings to
| | 04:48 |
be generally, knowing that you can change
them, and set that up here.
| | 04:53 |
Now, what license do you want?
We're going to talk about licensing in an
| | 04:57 |
upcoming movie.
There are many options under licensing.
| | 05:00 |
The default is that you reserve all
rights, but there are some very nice
| | 05:04 |
creative comments licenses.
After you see that movie, you may decide
| | 05:09 |
that you want to come back here and change
that default.
| | 05:13 |
Location data and ability to see that on a
map, that's something to really think about.
| | 05:19 |
I think generally speaking, I don't like
location data to be displayed by default.
| | 05:24 |
I like to set that up myself because, you
know, there are instances where you take a
| | 05:27 |
shot at home or something and you may not
want that location data to travel with
| | 05:30 |
that photo.
So, pay very close attention to both of
| | 05:34 |
these right here, rather they're showing
on a map, and rather that location data travels.
| | 05:41 |
Remember, everything that you take with a
mobile phone is usually geo tagged.
| | 05:46 |
Auto rotating photos, that's not a biggie,
that's generally yes.
| | 05:50 |
And then, safety and content level.
Will your photostream have, Flickr will
| | 05:54 |
have some say in this but, you can right
now say that I intend to be safe.
| | 05:59 |
And they will override that if your
content dictates otherwise.
| | 06:02 |
And then, finally, you have some search
settings and auto playing videos.
| | 06:08 |
And all of that is set up at the very
bottom of this extensive screen here on
| | 06:13 |
privacy and permissions.
So, there's a lot of stuff here, but it's
| | 06:18 |
worth spending a few minutes to make sure
that the settings are set to your comfort level.
| | 06:23 |

| Specifying email settings| 00:00 |
The Email & Notifications tab under your
account, this is much easier than the
| | 00:04 |
Private tab, that's the good news here.
And basically, what it is, is do you like
| | 00:10 |
to be notified via email when certain
things happen on your flicker account, so
| | 00:14 |
it starts out at the top here with, okay,
here is the e-mail account that I've established.
| | 00:22 |
And I set this up when I set up the Flickr
account, nimblephotographer@yahoo.com, so
| | 00:26 |
that would be my contact e-mail.
Now, if I decided that I wanted it to be
| | 00:31 |
my regular e-mail, the one that I use
everyday, I can go ahead and enter that
| | 00:36 |
right here.
And then those notifications will come to
| | 00:42 |
that e-mail as opposed to
nimblephotographer@yahoo.com.
| | 00:47 |
Also then, what will I be notified about?
Invitations and other notifications,
| | 00:53 |
Contact notification, Flickr messages from
other members.
| | 00:58 |
The defaults are set to Yes and I leave
them that way.
| | 01:02 |
I like to find out via e-mail if something
is going on, especially, if I haven't been
| | 01:06 |
over to my Flickr account either on my
iPhone or here on the web.
| | 01:11 |
Oh, maybe for a half day or so, and
something comes up, maybe someone that I'm
| | 01:15 |
very interested in, added me as a contact.
That's great to know and can I respond to
| | 01:20 |
them more quickly.
So, I like having those set at Yes.
| | 01:24 |
And then moving down here summary of your
recent uploads and activity to your
| | 01:28 |
private e-mail.
All of that here can also be changed.
| | 01:33 |
So, if you decide you don't want that,
just click on the Edit button and set it
| | 01:37 |
to the level that you're most comfortable
with.
| | 01:40 |
And this is very nice, I mean, you really
get to customize this Flicker account to
| | 01:44 |
the way you like to operate.
Finally, down here, you have some e-mail options.
| | 01:50 |
Now, some of these I think are left over
from the days when smartphones weren't as prevalent.
| | 01:56 |
For example, creating an upload to Flickr
e-mail address.
| | 02:00 |
Before smartphones, you could take a
picture with your camera and then upload
| | 02:04 |
it to Flickr using an e-mail address.
Well now, we have Flickr Mobile and that's
| | 02:09 |
not really necessary.
But if you're in a situation where you
| | 02:13 |
want to be able to send a picture to your
Flickr account just by attaching it to an
| | 02:18 |
e-mail, then go ahead and click on this,
and you can discover what that magical
| | 02:22 |
e-mail address is right there.
And then you can even set it up, so that
| | 02:28 |
certain tags are added every time, such as
your name.
| | 02:31 |
Now, if you have a blog, and you connect
that blog to Flickr, then you can also
| | 02:36 |
upload to that blog, from Flickr.
It's an upload to blog e-mail address and
| | 02:42 |
there's actually two different types of
those.
| | 02:45 |
Again, that's not as common as it used to
be because now we have, you know, blogging
| | 02:49 |
software and all of that on our
smartphones.
| | 02:54 |
This functionality isn't as useful as it
used to be, but, however, if there's a
| | 02:58 |
situation where you need it, you know
where it is.
| | 03:02 |
So, that's basically all there is to
e-mail life.
| | 03:05 |
I think the main thing is, think about
which e-mail address you want as your
| | 03:10 |
primary contact.
And then decide what types of emails do
| | 03:14 |
you want to receive and how often.
| | 03:17 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Sharing and extending| 00:00 |
If you use other social networking sites
such as Twitter or Facebook.
| | 00:05 |
You can connect them to your Flickr
account here in the Sharing and Extending
| | 00:09 |
tab under Your account.
Essentially the way that you do it is, for
| | 00:14 |
instance, Facebook.
You would come here, you would click on
| | 00:17 |
the Connect button.
You would be asked to Log In and you give
| | 00:21 |
permissions for those two accounts to talk
to one another.
| | 00:25 |
Let me show you how that looks once its
set up.
| | 00:28 |
We have that setup here in our Training
account.
| | 00:33 |
Here we go.
So we've already set up those connections
| | 00:35 |
with both Facebook and Twitter, and even
after you do that, you can go through and
| | 00:39 |
you can edit.
So for instance, you have this option
| | 00:44 |
here, Automatically share your public
Flickr uploads anywhere your Facebook
| | 00:47 |
updates are shown.
You can turn that Off or On there and then
| | 00:51 |
also, you can remove the connection.
Here between Facebook and Yahoo, between
| | 00:57 |
Facebook and Flickr, those can be changed.
And if you need more information all you
| | 01:03 |
have to do is click on the See Details and
you'll get just a bit more about that.
| | 01:09 |
Go ahead and close that, same thing.
We have Twitter set up, and once its set
| | 01:14 |
up then you can make changes.
You can remove that connection right here
| | 01:19 |
under this tab and if you have a Tumblr
account you can also do that here.
| | 01:26 |
So that's very handy and its a nice place
especially if you're home for photos end
| | 01:30 |
up being Flickr.
And then you decide which ones you want to
| | 01:34 |
share on the other sites you can control
all of that here.
| | 01:38 |
One other thing that I want to show you
under this tab, is that we have other
| | 01:43 |
account links setup already.
We've made connections to Flickr Uploadr
| | 01:49 |
which is a standalone app, to iPhoto, to
Aperture.
| | 01:53 |
We're going to be talking about those in
upcoming movies, but those are controlled
| | 01:57 |
here, they show up here.
And if you click on the edit button, then
| | 02:01 |
you can also remove those permissions
here.
| | 02:04 |
That all happens under this particular
tab, and that is the sharing and extending
| | 02:09 |
tab under your account in Flickr.
| | 02:13 |

6. Uploading Photos and VideosUploading photos using the upload link| 00:00 |
We're going to do one of the most
important and fun things with Flickr right now.
| | 00:04 |
We're going to start uploading photos, and
the most basic way to do that is use the
| | 00:09 |
Upload link right here in the Flickr nav
bar.
| | 00:13 |
Now, we're on our photostream page, right
here, you can see photos/lynda training.
| | 00:19 |
So, this nav bar, shows up in many
different areas of the site, so you don't
| | 00:22 |
have to be right here in order to upload
photos.
| | 00:26 |
Let's see how this thing works, it's
actually quite nice.
| | 00:29 |
So, we're going to click on the Upload
link, and it's going to bring us to the uploader.
| | 00:35 |
Now, I can drag and drop photos into this
area.
| | 00:38 |
Or I can navigate to them.
We'll go ahead and navigate by clicking
| | 00:42 |
right here on this link.
And we're going to go to the desktop.
| | 00:47 |
And let's go to flowers, and I have some
flowers I'm going to choose the first one.
| | 00:52 |
I'm going to hold down that Shift key.
Click on the last one and click Choose.
| | 00:58 |
Now, the uploader goes to work, starts to
bring in our images and it will use the
| | 01:03 |
file names or what metadata it has.
We can change that, though.
| | 01:09 |
We can work on these individual photos, so
for instance, if I want to work on this
| | 01:14 |
guy right here and just say Flower Close
Up, I can type that in.
| | 01:20 |
And if I want, I can add a description
too.
| | 01:23 |
So, I can do that.
Now, I can also work on many images at the
| | 01:28 |
same time, so I can hold down the Cmd key,
click on this one, and I can replace two
| | 01:34 |
titles at once if I wish.
We can just call these flowers, just like that.
| | 01:45 |
I'll hit the Tab key to enter that, and
then flowers is entered in both.
| | 01:50 |
So, you can work on multiple images.
So, we'll call this Canon with Zoom.
| | 01:57 |
Now, sometimes some meta data will come in
that you don't want.
| | 02:01 |
In this case, in the Description field.
I have this in meta data, that's left over
| | 02:05 |
from the camera I took it with.
I don't want that, so I'm just going to
| | 02:09 |
highlight it.
And I'm going to hit the Delete key, take
| | 02:12 |
that out right now.
I want to give this a little more friendly name.
| | 02:17 |
Something like that, there we go.
Excellent, now I can also move things around.
| | 02:25 |
So, if I want this shot to be the first on
the photo stream, I can grab that, and
| | 02:29 |
drag it over there.
And then, we can go to this.
| | 02:35 |
Take that there, and then here's the
camera that I took these shots with.
| | 02:38 |
So, that would be the last.
Now, if I want to add tags, let's say to
| | 02:43 |
these three flower shots, I'll hold down
the Cmd key, click on them.
| | 02:48 |
And I'll go here to tags, then we'll go
Flower.
| | 02:54 |
Hit enter.
Maybe Plants.
| | 02:58 |
Hit enter.
Now, if I want a two worded tag, let's say
| | 03:01 |
for these two right here.
So, I'll hold down the Cmd key.
| | 03:07 |
Deselect this one.
Now, for just these two, I put those in quotes.
| | 03:12 |
White Flower and hit enter.
And now, that will be added just to these
| | 03:18 |
two shots.
You notice I click on this one, it's not there.
| | 03:22 |
And then, down here, of course, we have a
tag set up for the zoom and I'll also just
| | 03:27 |
add one more tag right here for it, and
we'll put that in quotes.
| | 03:33 |
Because it's going to be multiple words,
Canon 60D.
| | 03:38 |
There we go, just like that.
Now, if I want I can add this to a set.
| | 03:42 |
Let's create a set for just the flowers.
Or they can be added to an existing set.
| | 03:48 |
So, I can create a new set or do existing
set.
| | 03:50 |
I'm going to hold down the shift key,
which is these three right here.
| | 03:55 |
And then click on Add to sets, we don't
have flowers already, so I'm going to
| | 03:59 |
create a new set.
I could type in a new description if I
| | 04:04 |
wish, create new set.
And they will automatically be added to
| | 04:08 |
that set.
Okay, I think we're all ready to go here.
| | 04:13 |
I'm not going to change the owner settings
in terms of the copyright or the
| | 04:17 |
visibility to the world.
I want it visible to everyone and I'm
| | 04:21 |
going to retain all rights on these, at
least for now.
| | 04:25 |
So, we're set, so then I just go up here
to upload five photos, make sure this is five.
| | 04:31 |
So, you notice I have three selected here.
That doesn't make any difference when it
| | 04:35 |
comes to uploading time.
You see it's still five photos because
| | 04:38 |
that's what we added to the uploader, so
we'll do that.
| | 04:41 |
Upload five photos.
It gives me a little recap of what I'm
| | 04:46 |
doing here.
That sounds fine.
| | 04:48 |
Upload to my photostream.
And look at that, there they are in all of
| | 04:55 |
their beauty.
So, let's take a look at one of these shots.
| | 05:01 |
There is our information right here.
I can still add a description if I want to
| | 05:08 |
do that.
Shows our photostream.
| | 05:11 |
It shows that it appears in the flowers
set.
| | 05:15 |
It shows our tags right down here that we
added on upload.
| | 05:18 |
And of course, that we kept the copyright
and we let the world see it.
| | 05:22 |
All of that information came in during the
uploading process.
| | 05:28 |
Let's go back to our photostream.
And there we go.
| | 05:32 |
So, I think that is one of the easiest
ways to add photos to your Flickr account.
| | 05:38 |
Just using the good old built in upload
link right here in the top nav bar.
| | 05:44 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Using the old Uploadr link| 00:00 |
So you want to take a trip back in time.
Let me show you the old uploader link,
| | 00:06 |
even with this latest version of Flickr,
we still have access to it.
| | 00:11 |
Not that we'd use it but it's just a kick
knowing that it's here.
| | 00:15 |
So, I'm going to go to upload, now earlier
we talked about using the modern uploader
| | 00:19 |
to add photos to your Flickr account, but
they still kept the old uploader, look at
| | 00:23 |
this link right here.
Do you remember these days where you had
| | 00:30 |
to choose files one by one by one?
Maybe add tags to the whole batch, set the
| | 00:35 |
privacy settings, and then upload.
So, if you're feeling nostalgic, if you
| | 00:41 |
want to go to the old days, then the old
Flickr uploader is still here.
| | 00:48 |
I have to tell you, though, for me, I much
prefer the newer way of doing it.
| | 00:53 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Using the Flickr Uploadr software| 00:00 |
There is a stand-alone Flickr Uploadr.
And there might be a situation where you
| | 00:06 |
need a stand-alone app instead of the
built in uploader app that I talked about
| | 00:10 |
previously, here built into Flickr.
The way that you get to this stand-alone
| | 00:16 |
app is that you go to flickr.com/tools and
that will bring you to this page.
| | 00:22 |
And then you can download the stand-alone
application either, for your Mac, or
| | 00:28 |
Windows 7 computer.
Now, once you have that, let's go ahead
| | 00:32 |
and minimize this, here is the Flicker
Uploadr here, you can launch it.
| | 00:38 |
And then you use add photos.
You pick the shots that you want to upload.
| | 00:45 |
And then you fill out the basic
information and upload.
| | 00:47 |
So, it basically does the same
functionality that we did before but it's
| | 00:52 |
a stand-alone application, so you're not
in the web interface.
| | 00:57 |
As I said, there might be a situation
where that comes in handy.
| | 01:01 |
And if there is, and you need to get to
it, then just go to flickr.com/tools and
| | 01:06 |
you can download the stand-alone uploader.
| | 01:11 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Uploading from iPhoto| 00:00 |
You can connect you iPhoto account to your
Flickr account, which is kind of convenient.
| | 00:05 |
You have images in iPhoto you want to
share in Flickr, you can do it directly
| | 00:08 |
from within iPhoto.
Let's take a look at how to do that.
| | 00:13 |
So, here I am in iPhoto.
I'm going to go up here to Preferences,
| | 00:17 |
and I'm go to the Accounts tab under
Preferences.
| | 00:21 |
I'm going to go to the plus icon and click
on it, and I'm going to choose a Flickr
| | 00:25 |
from my list of possibilities.
Click Add.
| | 00:30 |
It's going to ask me if I want to set up.
Of course I do, so click on that, and even
| | 00:34 |
though I'm signed in it wants me to sign
in again just to make double sure.
| | 00:47 |
Click the Sign In button and here we go.
If you arrived at this page because you
| | 00:52 |
specifically asked iPhoto OS 10 to connect
to your Flickr account, click here.
| | 00:58 |
That's where we're going to click, right
there.
| | 01:01 |
Recaps all the things we're authorizing.
Sounds good to me.
| | 01:05 |
And now, we have done our work, you can go
ahead and close this window.
| | 01:11 |
We will do that.
I'll go ahead and minimize this.
| | 01:15 |
It's authorizing, we are enabled.
Yay.
| | 01:19 |
So, we'll go ahead and close this, now
you'll notice, look at this, we have a new
| | 01:22 |
thing here.
And it has, look at that, our Flickr activity.
| | 01:27 |
So, they're already talking to one
another, isn't that wonderful?
| | 01:31 |
So now, if I want to publish a photo, on
Flickr from my iPhoto account, I'm just
| | 01:35 |
going to click on it, we'll go down the
the Share icon.
| | 01:39 |
I'm going to choose Flickr.
I'm just going to add it directly to my photostream.
| | 01:44 |
I could create a new set.
Or I could add it to an existing set.
| | 01:49 |
We'll choose photostream.
And I could put it in any sets.
| | 01:51 |
Viewable by anyone?
Yes, but we do have options.
| | 01:57 |
But I want the world to see this, and then
we can choose the photo size.
| | 02:00 |
And I'm going to go with the 1024 by 1024.
That's a nice viewing size for web.
| | 02:04 |
I'm going to click on Publish.
There we go, a nice big alert.
| | 02:11 |
Now, let's see if this actually worked out
that way.
| | 02:14 |
We'll go back to our Flickr account.
Let's go to our photostream.
| | 02:18 |
Let's refresh.
And look at that.
| | 02:22 |
Just like that.
Look it.
| | 02:23 |
That came in just beautifully.
Now, if I want to make any adjustments to
| | 02:27 |
this, I just click on it, navigate down.
Let's say that I just want to clean up
| | 02:32 |
this title a bit.
Just like that.
| | 02:35 |
I don't want this description.
We'll take that out.
| | 02:41 |
We'll Save, and we've done our
housekeeping.
| | 02:42 |
I'm going to Minimize this and we're
going to go back to iPhoto for just a second.
| | 02:51 |
We're going to click here.
Now, if I had put this in a set, it would
| | 02:54 |
actually show up in our set here.
Here we have a set of one.
| | 02:59 |
Let's just see if we can make that happen.
Just go back to Flickr real quick.
| | 03:04 |
Take our photo here.
We're going to go add to set.
| | 03:10 |
Add it to Camera Gear.
Done.
| | 03:12 |
Go back to our photostream here.
And finally, last step, we'll go back to iPhoto.
| | 03:22 |
Here we go, Camera Gear.
iPhoto chats for minute with Flickr and
| | 03:29 |
the photo is added to the set.
Beautiful.
| | 03:36 |
So, there's two way communication, and the
way that you set it up is going to Preferences.
| | 03:41 |
Establish the connection in the Accounts
tab, and then off to the race as you go.
| | 03:46 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Uploading from Aperture| 00:00 |
You can connect photos from your Aperture
library to your Flickr account.
| | 00:05 |
And for those of you that us Aperature a
lot, it's probably your home database for
| | 00:08 |
everything, and then you can just choose
the shots that go up to Flickr.
| | 00:12 |
And it can save you a step because you can
do it directly from this application.
| | 00:17 |
Now, if you watched the iPhoto movie, you
know that you have to establish the connection.
| | 00:21 |
This is true in Aperture too, you have to
establish the connection between Flickr
| | 00:25 |
and Aperture.
That happens in Preferences.
| | 00:29 |
Go to Preferences, go to the web tab here,
and you see that we already have Flickr setup.
| | 00:36 |
And the way that happened was I just
clicked the Plus, I chose Flickr, and then
| | 00:40 |
I authorized the communication between the
two apps.
| | 00:46 |
It's very simple, so we have that
communication set up, now I want to send
| | 00:49 |
these photos up to Flickr.
Click the first one, I hold down the Shift
| | 00:54 |
key, go to the end one.
And then I go up here to File, Share and I
| | 01:01 |
choose Flickr.
And we'll get a dialog box, first of all,
| | 01:06 |
it's verifying that we want to send these
four photos to our Flickr account.
| | 01:11 |
Let's set up a new set.
So, we can do that here.
| | 01:14 |
If I don't want to set up a new set, I can
just send them directly to the photo stream.
| | 01:19 |
But, let's do a set because sets are fun.
We'll just call it I-5 overpasses.
| | 01:24 |
We'll let the world see it.
And we're going to go with web sized
| | 01:28 |
images, right there web images.
You have other choices.
| | 01:33 |
We can send of the actual size or
optimized or web.
| | 01:37 |
These go from largest to smallest.
So, we'll go with the web images.
| | 01:42 |
They're the smaller of the bunch.
They're 1024.
| | 01:46 |
And I'm going to click on the Publish
button.
| | 01:48 |
And they are going to work right now.
So, you see under web now, we have Flickr
| | 01:56 |
has been added.
And we can see down here, that the
| | 02:00 |
publishing action is happening.
Now, once it finishes we should get a new
| | 02:06 |
album or set up here on this page that has
our overpasses.
| | 02:12 |
And they're there are so it says that
they're on Flickr.
| | 02:16 |
We can open these up.
Now, we're still in Aperture.
| | 02:19 |
So, we can manage our set or our albums,
here in Aperture.
| | 02:23 |
So, everything looks good here.
Lets go to Flicker because, I mean that's
| | 02:27 |
the proof, right?
It show up online.
| | 02:29 |
So, we'll minimize this.
We'll open Flicker.
| | 02:32 |
Lets refresh.
There are our photos.
| | 02:40 |
So, there's our shot.
Scroll down, let's take a look at the information.
| | 02:44 |
We have all of our good information and,
look at that, it also appears in the set
| | 02:48 |
by five overpasses.
Fantastic.
| | 02:54 |
Now, if I want to do any editing on these
shots, if I want to give it a name, I can
| | 03:00 |
call it Big gBeen Overpass.
I can clean up the description if I wish.
| | 03:07 |
Just like before.
And then Save.
| | 03:11 |
When I'm finished, I can go back to my
Photostream.
| | 03:15 |
And look at that, it's a beautiful thing.
So, this is the connection between
| | 03:22 |
Aperture and Flickr.
And they talk to each other.
| | 03:25 |
So, the stuff you do in Aperture will be
reflected here.
| | 03:29 |
And vice versa.
And the main thing to remember is just
| | 03:33 |
make sure, that when you're in Aperture,
you set up that connection, under
| | 03:37 |
Preferences and the web tab, and you'll be
good to go.
| | 03:42 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Uploading from Lightroom| 00:00 |
Flickr and Lightroom, they communicate
well, and all you have to do is establish
| | 00:03 |
a connection.
And then, Lightroom looks at the
| | 00:07 |
management of the photos as a collection.
It uses the collection system.
| | 00:13 |
You start by making sure that the
connection is set up between the two.
| | 00:17 |
And if you haven't done that yet, you
would just go to Flickr, click on the Set
| | 00:22 |
Up link and add the information.
Once you're set up, you'll see something
| | 00:29 |
like this.
And this is actually an online collection.
| | 00:33 |
That's the way Lightroom treats that.
I'll show you how that works.
| | 00:37 |
Let's add a photo to this, so go to
photographs here.
| | 00:41 |
And let's say that I want to add this shot
to my Flicker account.
| | 00:46 |
I want it to be present online, so just
drag it down to the photostream here.
| | 00:52 |
And now we'll click down there.
Again, this is a collection, so what we
| | 00:56 |
manage here is virtual.
If we delete a photo, we're not deleting
| | 01:01 |
it from Lightroom, just from this
collection.
| | 01:04 |
So, it's ready to go here, so we have to
publish it in order to make it live.
| | 01:09 |
So, I'll click on the Publish button.
Okay, now, Lightroom has said that this
| | 01:14 |
should be on our Flickr account.
Let's take a look at it.
| | 01:19 |
So I'm going to refresh.
And look at that, there's our photo.
| | 01:26 |
Click on it, we can give it a title.
And also play with the description, and
| | 01:34 |
then save.
We have more information right down here.
| | 01:40 |
And then I'll go back to my photostream,
because I want to go back to Lightroom.
| | 01:44 |
So, go ahead and minimize this, here we
are in Lightroom.
| | 01:47 |
I want to show you one other kind of
unique feature, so if I click on an image
| | 01:52 |
and I right-click on this image, I can
tell it to show me in Flicker.
| | 01:58 |
And it will take me directly to that image
online with the image URL, just like that.
| | 02:06 |
And if I decide that I want to delete an
image from Flickr, all I have to do is
| | 02:11 |
delete it from this collection.
I'll click on it, Remove from Collection,
| | 02:18 |
I would choose that.
And then I would republish and that would
| | 02:22 |
remove that from the Flickr site.
So, they talk really nicely to each other.
| | 02:27 |
The main thing is to establish a
connection and then think of this as a collection.
| | 02:33 |
And then once you make your changes,
remember to publish and you'll be in great shape.
| | 02:38 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Uploading video clips| 00:00 |
You can also upload videos to Flickr which
is really neat.
| | 00:04 |
They like to think of them as long photos.
And the reason why is that they actually
| | 00:09 |
have a limit.
Now, previously, in the old Flickr days it
| | 00:13 |
was 90 seconds.
But with the new Flickr, the Flickr that
| | 00:16 |
you're looking at right now, they've upped
it to three minutes.
| | 00:20 |
So, you can upload three minutes of HD
video.
| | 00:23 |
How do you do that?
Go to our friend, the upload link right
| | 00:27 |
here, and you'll see, Choose photos and
videos.
| | 00:32 |
We'll choose our movie.
Now, you treat this the same way that you
| | 00:39 |
do a photo, in the sense that you can Add
a description, you can Add tags to this.
| | 00:48 |
So, we can boat, sailing.
And you can even edit to set.
| | 00:54 |
And you can set or establish your owner
settings.
| | 00:58 |
So, that's all very much just like a
photo.
| | 01:01 |
Again, Flickr thinks of it as a long
photo.
| | 01:04 |
In this case, this one's about a little
over a minute.
| | 01:08 |
But you can go up to three minutes.
Once you're ready, you go over to upload
| | 01:12 |
one photo, upload the photostream.
Flickr will process the video for you.
| | 01:19 |
So, our movie has finished processing and
it's ready to play.
| | 01:23 |
And we know it's a movie because it has a
play button.
| | 01:27 |
And if I click on the Play button, it will
bring me to the larger version and we can
| | 01:31 |
watch a couple seconds of it.
(SOUND).
| | 01:35 |
Everything looks good, and we'll go back
to our photostream.
| | 01:44 |
So, just as promised, these are long
photos and you treat them essentially the
| | 01:49 |
same way you do regular photographs.
And you can intermix them with the rest of
| | 01:55 |
your shots, you can put them in sets, do
all the things that you like to do on
| | 01:59 |
Flickr with your videos.
As long as they're less than three minutes long.
| | 02:06 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Connecting Flickr to Facebook| 00:00 |
Flickr and Facebook, they play nicely
together.
| | 00:03 |
You just have to go through a couple
steps.
| | 00:05 |
We're going to start out by going up here
to our settings and just review our connection.
| | 00:12 |
We're going to go to Sharing & Extending.
And yes, I have my Facebook connection established.
| | 00:19 |
If you haven't done that yet, it's very
easy.
| | 00:22 |
What you'll have here, instead of edit,
you'll have connect.
| | 00:26 |
So, you can click on connect and you
authorize the teo to talk to each other.
| | 00:31 |
Then once you do that that will change to
edit, right here.
| | 00:34 |
And you do have one setting, Automatically
share your public Flickr uploads anywhere,
| | 00:38 |
your Facebook updates are shown.
I'm actually going to turn that off.
| | 00:43 |
You don't need to automatically do it.
You can do it on a one by one basis, where
| | 00:47 |
you're only publishing the photos that you
want to Facebook.
| | 00:52 |
So, uncheck that box, and I'm going to
save it.
| | 00:57 |
And this is also the place where if you
want to disconnect the two, you can do
| | 01:00 |
that right here.
All right, so we're set up.
| | 01:05 |
So, let's go back to our Photostream.
And if I want to send a photo up, let's go down.
| | 01:12 |
I want to send up another flower shot.
How about this shot right here?
| | 01:16 |
I want to put that on my Facebook page.
I think this shot would look nice on Facebook.
| | 01:22 |
So I go to the sharing icon and I'm
going to choose Facebook.
| | 01:28 |
So, the connection has been made, so it
knows what I want to do and it knows where
| | 01:31 |
to put it.
I can establish, this is something for my
| | 01:35 |
Friends or for Only Me.
I want my friends to see it.
| | 01:40 |
We can add a little description.
And now I'll post.
| | 01:46 |
Okay, it's been shared, let's go ahead and
go back to our Photostream here.
| | 01:53 |
Let's go over to the Facebook page.
I'm going to refresh, and there it is, in
| | 02:00 |
all of it's glory, look at that.
Very simple and I had put one up earlier.
| | 02:07 |
So, images from our Flickr Photostream or
from sets within Flickr, can easily be
| | 02:13 |
posted to Facebook, once you establish the
connection.
| | 02:19 |
All you do is look for the share icon,
choose Facebook, and you're set.
| | 02:24 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Connecting Flickr to Twitter| 00:00 |
One of the things that I like to do is, I
like to tweet from Flickr also.
| | 00:05 |
I think it's cool adding a photo to a
tweet.
| | 00:07 |
It just gives it another dimension.
Now, before we can do that, of course, we
| | 00:12 |
gotta go back to our settings to make sure
everything is wired up correctly.
| | 00:16 |
So we go to Settings going to go over to
Sharing and Extending.
| | 00:20 |
And going to make sure that the connection
has been made.
| | 00:24 |
I'll click on the Edit button to review
that, yes and we're going to send it to my
| | 00:28 |
Twitter account.
That looks good.
| | 00:31 |
Now, if you haven't done that yet, you'll
have a Connect there instead of edit.
| | 00:36 |
You just authorize the two to talk to one
another.
| | 00:38 |
Okay, so we're all set up, let's go to our
photo stream.
| | 00:44 |
And, I don't know, let's tweet that I'm
here at Lynda doing this work.
| | 00:49 |
So I'm going to tweet this cup right here.
So I'll click on that.
| | 00:54 |
The Lynda coffee mug.
So I go over here to share and Twitter
| | 00:57 |
will work as I've made that connection.
You don't want to get rid of this part.
| | 01:04 |
This part is important because that's the
link to the photo.
| | 01:07 |
But we're going to add a little info here.
There we go.
| | 01:11 |
Lovely.
So that way all my Twitter friends know
| | 01:15 |
what I'm doing right now.
Everything looks good.
| | 01:18 |
So let's post it.
Okay, let's go over to Twitter.
| | 01:26 |
And some new tweets here.
Okay, here we are at Twitter.
| | 01:36 |
Here it is right here, here's my Tweet.
Now, I can click on the View Photo.
| | 01:41 |
And look at that.
So it's fun, right?
| | 01:43 |
You know, we've got a little image to go
with your Tweet, so it really drives it
| | 01:46 |
home, and you can do that directly out of
Flickr.
| | 01:50 |
Just make sure that you connect the two in
your settings.
| | 01:54 |
And then, you can add a new dimension to
your tweets.
| | 01:59 |

7. Viewing PhotosGetting around in your photostream and lightbox| 00:00 |
Let's spend a few minutes in our
Photostream.
| | 00:02 |
I mean Photostream, is the heart of your
Flickr page.
| | 00:07 |
This is where images appear in
chronological order as you upload them
| | 00:10 |
here at the top.
And as you move down your Photostream, you
| | 00:15 |
get into your photos.
But you have a chance to experience your
| | 00:19 |
photos a couple of different ways.
Let's go down to our flower shot, for
| | 00:24 |
example, here in our Photostream.
If I want a closer look at it, I can click
| | 00:30 |
on it.
And we get the larger version and we also
| | 00:34 |
get the magnify glass.
Now, if I click again.
| | 00:39 |
We'll go into Lightbox mode so that most
of the distractions are eliminated.
| | 00:45 |
By the way, you can do Lightbox mode with
L key also on your keyboard to toggle in
| | 00:50 |
and out.
So, I'll hit the L key to toggle out, and
| | 00:54 |
then the L key again to toggle back in.
We also have navigation.
| | 01:00 |
So, we can go to the next photo, and the
arrow keys on your keyboard also do the
| | 01:04 |
same thing.
So, I'll hit the Back Arrow to go back to
| | 01:08 |
our image.
Now, in the old flickr we also had a link
| | 01:12 |
to view all sizes here.
That has actually been moved.
| | 01:17 |
So, I'm going to go out of Lightbox mode,
I'll hit the L key.
| | 01:21 |
And go down here to the three Flicker
dots, click on them and you see that we
| | 01:27 |
have view all sizes here now.
And this is actually the old interface
| | 01:33 |
with a new nav bar, but this is where that
functionality lives now.
| | 01:39 |
I'm going to go ahead and hit the Back
key.
| | 01:41 |
I'll bring this back to this mode.
And while we're here, you should also know
| | 01:46 |
that there are a few other goodies here
that we will explore off and on through
| | 01:50 |
different movies.
And your XF data is here now also.
| | 01:55 |
And you can actually click on the image to
bring this back to right here.
| | 02:01 |
You can add a comment by clicking here.
Or you can just scroll.
| | 02:06 |
And if it was someone else's photo you can
mark it as a favorite.
| | 02:12 |
When you're done enjoying the photo if you
want to go back to the Photo Stream page.
| | 02:18 |
Then just go to You.
| | 02:20 |
And it brings us back to where we began.
(SOUND) So, they moved a few things around
| | 02:27 |
from the older version, but it's still
fairly easy to navigate.
| | 02:33 |
And, it's such a delight to look at the
images in this new and improved layout,
| | 02:38 |
isn't it?
| | 02:39 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Viewing photos as a slideshow| 00:01 |
The Slideshow function built into Flickr
can be used a couple of different ways.
| | 00:04 |
When you're here in your Photostream, you
can just go over here to the Slideshow
| | 00:08 |
button, click on it, and it'll just start
a slideshow from the beginning of your
| | 00:12 |
Photostream or I should say from the top
of your Photostream.
| | 00:18 |
So the most current photos.
You notice that they add a Ken Burns
| | 00:21 |
effect for you.
And you just motor through your
| | 00:27 |
Photostream via Slideshow.
I'll go ahead and pause that, go up to the
| | 00:31 |
x to exit out of the slideshow.
Now, if you want you to start the
| | 00:37 |
slideshow from a specific point, let's say
that we do a slideshow of these different
| | 00:42 |
poses by Victoria.
I'm going to go ahead and click on
| | 00:47 |
Victoria just like this here.
I'm going to click again to go into
| | 00:51 |
lightbox mode.
Now, once I'm in lightbox mode, you'll see
| | 00:55 |
that the slideshow play button appears, so
I can click on that and the slideshow begins.
| | 01:05 |
When I'm done watching the slideshow, I
can pause, go back to the x button to get
| | 01:10 |
out of this mode.
I'm going to hit the l key to exit
| | 01:16 |
lightbox mode, and then I'll go back to my
Photostream.
| | 01:22 |
Now, you can also do slide show in sets.
So I'm looking inside a set right now, I
| | 01:30 |
clicked the slideshow button.
Then the images are shown.
| | 01:40 |
So, you can use sets, if you want, to
create a storyboard.
| | 01:47 |
If you want to have more control over how
your slideshow looks and I'll just go back
| | 01:52 |
to our Photostream.
So, slideshow.
| | 01:55 |
You can watch the whole thing.
You can start from any point in your
| | 01:59 |
Photostream, or if you want more control,
if you want to storyboard it a bit, create
| | 02:04 |
a set, and then play the slideshow from
within the set.
| | 02:10 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Sharing photos via email| 00:00 |
You can send photos via email directly out
of Flickr.
| | 00:03 |
So for example say that I just finished
this trip and I'm in my new location and I
| | 00:08 |
want to send photos of the trip back to
the family I can do that.
| | 00:14 |
Just click on the image, go to the Share
icon, choose Email.
| | 00:20 |
Enter the email address and the message
and send it off.
| | 00:24 |
Let's go back to our photo stream.
Now the email address that I send it from,
| | 00:30 |
remember that is managed in our settings.
So we'll go to Settings here and we'll go
| | 00:36 |
to Email Notifications.
What the viewer would see is that it would
| | 00:40 |
be sent from this address right here.
Now if you want to send a group of photos
| | 00:46 |
you can also do that.
Put it in a set.
| | 00:52 |
Open up the set.
You'll notice that we have the Share icon
| | 00:55 |
right here.
So click on that.
| | 00:58 |
Now I will choose Email.
And so all of our images from the set will
| | 01:02 |
be attached to the email.
And that's all there is to it.
| | 01:08 |
So individual photos or a whole set of
photos either can be emailed directly out
| | 01:14 |
of Flickr.
| | 01:16 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Searching techniques| 00:00 |
There are a lot of great photos in the
Flickr universe.
| | 00:03 |
And you can use its Search tools to
discover those photos.
| | 00:07 |
Or is one of the ways that you could
discover those photos.
| | 00:10 |
Now, the search box is right up here.
And I could just enter a search term,
| | 00:15 |
let's enter flower, and I'll hit the
Return key.
| | 00:23 |
And I'm shown a bunch of flower shots.
Flickr will start out with relevant, but
| | 00:27 |
if you click this down arrow, right here,
you'll see that you can also filter by recent.
| | 00:35 |
So these are the latest flower shots that
have been uploaded.
| | 00:40 |
And then also interesting, which is
kind of Flickr's own special sauce for
| | 00:44 |
looking at shots, and these tends to be
quite good.
| | 00:48 |
Now we also have Advanced Search, so I'm
going to go back over here to our Advanced
| | 00:52 |
Search, and let me show you how that
works.
| | 00:56 |
Here we get to refine our search.
So we have options, for instance if you're
| | 01:02 |
using a phrase that any of the words or
the exact phrase or all the words.
| | 01:07 |
We'll just stick with flower for now, but
we can search in everyone's uploads.
| | 01:12 |
Which is the default, but I could search
just in my Photostream or just with my
| | 01:16 |
Contacts or my Friends and Family.
So you can narrow it down right here.
| | 01:22 |
I think this is very useful, I'm going to
choose Photostream.
| | 01:26 |
And then I can also choose other criteria,
such as safe search, type of content, only
| | 01:32 |
photos and videos, and search by date, I
can set date parameters also.
| | 01:39 |
Right now, let's just search for a flower
within my photostream and see how that works.
| | 01:48 |
And there are my three flower shots.
So the main thing about search is that
| | 01:52 |
when you just enter a term up here, the
default will be all of Flickr.
| | 01:58 |
But you can also set filters for that, and
then once you get the results, then you
| | 02:04 |
have additional filters such as relevant,
recent, and interesting.
| | 02:12 |
By doing so, you should be able to find
just about any type of photo that you're
| | 02:17 |
looking for, in Flickr.
| | 02:21 |

8. Adding Information to PhotosCreating and editing titles and descriptions| 00:00 |
You can change titles and descriptions in
Flickr.
| | 00:04 |
It's kind of fun to do, and it's nice to
have things organized, isn't it?
| | 00:08 |
Tidy having correct descriptions, tidy
having nice titles.
| | 00:12 |
To do so, just open any photo, we've
opened this shot right here, and you mouse
| | 00:17 |
over the area where the existing title is.
Now, you're going to have something there,
| | 00:23 |
won't be blank.
It could be a file number or something,
| | 00:26 |
but you'll have something there, and you
just click on it.
| | 00:29 |
And then, for instance in this case we can
edit it, we can just add lens in we want.
| | 00:34 |
I'm going to scroll down and the
description field becomes available.
| | 00:42 |
So, it wasn't there before.
I'll go ahead and save.
| | 00:45 |
Let me just show you how that works.
So, right now, you don't see it, but you
| | 00:48 |
click on this and it appears.
And now I'll type a description, Sigma
| | 00:55 |
zoom on a Canon 60D DSL R.
So, we've added a bit more information.
| | 01:04 |
Now, I click Save, and that information
will appear below.
| | 01:09 |
If I want to edit it, I can.
I just click on it again and can edit.
| | 01:14 |
Now, down here, this is the Comments
field, so, this is where other people
| | 01:18 |
comment on your photos.
It's different than the Description, and
| | 01:21 |
of course you can comment on your own
photo, if you wish.
| | 01:25 |
Just be careful that you don't
accidentally write a comment when you
| | 01:28 |
think you're adding a Description.
Description's up here, Comments are down there.
| | 01:34 |
Click Save to lock it in, and you're ready
to go.
| | 01:37 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Make photos easy to find: Adding tags and searching with tags| 00:00 |
Tags are an important part of Flickr.
They're a kin to keywords that we use, and
| | 00:05 |
they're useful for marking your photos to
help other people find them.
| | 00:10 |
And then, you can use tags, also, to find
other people's photos.
| | 00:14 |
So, it's just a way to help find, or get
to what you want to get to within this
| | 00:18 |
giant universe of images.
I'm going to go back to our Canon camera
| | 00:24 |
here, and if we scroll down the screen a
bit, we'll see that we've added a few tags already.
| | 00:31 |
I think I did those on upload, and if I
want to add another tag I can do that
| | 00:35 |
right here.
Let's say DSLR.
| | 00:38 |
And that's the thing.
When you're thinking about tags, you're
| | 00:43 |
thinking about what terms are people using
to search for certain items.
| | 00:48 |
And then, you want to add those terms to
your photo if you want it found in the
| | 00:52 |
Flickr universe here.
So, I added DSLR by hitting the Return
| | 00:57 |
key, and I could add camera.
That's another tag, and I'll hit return.
| | 01:04 |
So, we're adding search terms is what
we're doing.
| | 01:06 |
Now, what'a little awkward, in my opinion,
about the current Flickr interface is I'm
| | 01:10 |
adding tags and I"m not actually looking
at my image.
| | 01:15 |
There is a way around that.
Let me scroll back up here to our photo.
| | 01:19 |
We go over to the Flickr dots.
Click on that.
| | 01:23 |
There's this little command that we have
called Edit, title, tags, and dates.
| | 01:28 |
Click on that.
And here, now I get a version of the image
| | 01:33 |
that I can see while I'm actually working
on my tags.
| | 01:39 |
So, you see the multi-word tags are
embedded in quotes.
| | 01:43 |
Let's come up with another one.
So, we'll put one in quotes here.
| | 01:47 |
Macro Lens, because it's a macro lens.
And then, close the quotes just like that.
| | 01:55 |
And in this case, I don't have to hit
enter afterwards, we're going to, I'll
| | 01:58 |
scroll down to the bottom here.
Once we're done, we'll just save the changes.
| | 02:04 |
And by the way, if you feel more
comfortable editing your title and
| | 02:07 |
description you can do that in this field
also.
| | 02:10 |
So, we've added that, we added Macro Lens
and put it in quotes, so it'll be one tag
| | 02:14 |
and I'm going to save the changes right
here.
| | 02:19 |
Let's scroll down the screen, see how we
did.
| | 02:22 |
There it is right there.
Now, if you want to get rid of a tag.
| | 02:25 |
If you decide, I don't like Macro Lens,
just click on the Red X.
| | 02:30 |
It will go away.
Now, if you're searching for images, and
| | 02:33 |
you want to focus on tags, you can do
that.
| | 02:37 |
So, let's say, up here I want to search
for Canon 60D, that's a DSLR body that
| | 02:42 |
we're looking at.
We click Search.
| | 02:47 |
And Flickr will give me all sorts of
things.
| | 02:51 |
If I want to refine that search just for
tags, I go to Advanced Search.
| | 02:57 |
And here, I click on Tags only.
And I would probably say The exact phrase also.
| | 03:06 |
Because it could break this up, and we're
going to get unusual results anyway, but
| | 03:11 |
we'll get less unusual results.
Now, we're just searching by tags only.
| | 03:20 |
And you see that you're getting different
shots because the person tagged these
| | 03:23 |
shots with Canon 60D because they used the
camera to take the shot.
| | 03:28 |
So, you're going to get different results
searching by tags.
| | 03:32 |
But if you want to know everything that's
key worded with the term Canon 60D, then
| | 03:37 |
that's the way you do that.
You can search by tags.
| | 03:40 |
So, we're going to go back to our shot
right here and we'll go back to our
| | 03:45 |
photostream and there you go.
So, when you're thinking about search
| | 03:51 |
engine optimization in the Flickr
universe, think tags.
| | 03:56 |
And that will help other people find your
shots and you can use it to find other
| | 04:00 |
folks' images also.
| | 04:03 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Adding a photo to your map| 00:00 |
The mapping functionality in Flickr, it's
fun, I like it a lot.
| | 00:04 |
And, the nice thing about it is that, if
you want to have a photo associated with a
| | 00:08 |
location, you don't need a camera that
does geotagging, you can actually do it
| | 00:12 |
here in Flickr.
Let me pick a shot here.
| | 00:16 |
I'll pick this flower shot right here.
And I'm going to go over to our three dots
| | 00:22 |
I'm going to add it to my map.
Now, this shot was actually taken in Santa Rosa.
| | 00:29 |
If I wanted to say, though, however, that
I took this shot, let's say, in Rohnert
| | 00:34 |
Park, I would just enter that information
right here.
| | 00:41 |
And click Go, there we go.
And it will take it right there.
| | 00:45 |
Okay.
Now, I can zoom in, closer if I want.
| | 00:47 |
Just use the zoom thing here.
And if you wanted to be more specific
| | 00:51 |
about where in Roener Park, let's say that
was taken in Alicia Park, then you can put
| | 00:56 |
that right there.
And you have some additional options right
| | 01:03 |
here depending on the area not all areas
are going to give you this but right now
| | 01:06 |
neighborhood A works for me.
Now, in terms of who can see the stuff on
| | 01:12 |
your map you have some choices from anyone
in the whole world which in the case of
| | 01:15 |
flower taken at a park I think that's
fine.
| | 01:20 |
All the way down to only you or maybe only
family, and of course, you know, if you
| | 01:23 |
have like a family function at your
grandmother's house, you may not want to
| | 01:26 |
have the whole world see where that is, so
then you can limit to only you and your
| | 01:30 |
family, but this case we're going to go
with anyone.
| | 01:35 |
Then we're going to save the location.
That's done.
| | 01:39 |
Now we'll come back here to our flower and
we scroll down a bit.
| | 01:46 |
Look at this, we have a new thing, we have
where this flower was, and if I click on
| | 01:50 |
this it will take me to the map.
So that's fun and when you see that on
| | 01:55 |
other people's photos you can discover
where they took their shots if they're
| | 01:59 |
sharing that with you.
But, there's one other little goody here I
| | 02:03 |
just want to show you.
If we come back to You and we go to Map,
| | 02:08 |
look at this.
This is kind of neat.
| | 02:13 |
So, everything that we put on a map.
Will show up on the big map here, and then
| | 02:17 |
we can click on it, and we can see.
Hey, that's the shot I took in Munich, right?
| | 02:24 |
Is that neat?
Here's a shot.
| | 02:28 |
And I took this.
By the way, this shot here, that was taken
| | 02:32 |
with an iPhone, so it automatically
geotagged the shot for me, and then it's
| | 02:37 |
been added to my map.
So you can use the map for you own stuff too.
| | 02:44 |
Its not just seeing where other people
took their shots.
| | 02:47 |
If you want an overview of your world
travels everywhere that you've been, you
| | 02:50 |
get pins on a map and you click on it and
you get to see the photos there.
| | 02:55 |
I think that's kind of neat.
Sort of fun, and it's very easy to do.
| | 02:59 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Creating notes to identify things in a photo| 00:00 |
You can add notes to your images that tell
people, they are like callouts, right, so,
| | 00:03 |
they can see what's going on in the shot.
You can identify elements in a shot.
| | 00:09 |
So, we have these three lenses here.
So, if I wanted people to know what these
| | 00:13 |
three lenses were, I can create notes for
them.
| | 00:16 |
So, I'm going to go down here to my Flickr
dots and do Add Note.
| | 00:20 |
I'm going to position this over this
particular item, just like this.
| | 00:26 |
We'll save that, and then we'll just add
another note, one for each lens and then
| | 00:32 |
one more.
We gave to do the third lens.
| | 00:37 |
So, add a note for that, just drag that
over here, click the (UNKNOWN) there we go.
| | 00:44 |
Now, when either you or viewers are
looking at the photo they'll see these
| | 00:48 |
squares, and they can mouse over them and
see what's going on there.
| | 00:54 |
Neat huh, and I see people they take their
entire camera bag.
| | 00:58 |
They show a picture of it with all of
their gear inside, and they identify each
| | 01:02 |
piece of gear with one of these notes.
I'm not encouraging you to do that, I'm
| | 01:07 |
just saying that you can get as meticulous
as you want with this functionality.
| | 01:12 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Adding the name of someone who appears in a photo| 00:00 |
You can identify people in a shot.
And I don't mean by description or title
| | 00:04 |
but actually the same way that in the
previous movie, where we could do these
| | 00:08 |
little notes.
Well we can do that with persons, too.
| | 00:13 |
I'll show you.
Go back to our Photostream here.
| | 00:16 |
Let's go down here.
Will identify me.
| | 00:24 |
So you pull up the photo, you go over to
the Flickr dots, add a person right here.
| | 00:31 |
If you use Facebook you're going to feel
very comfortable with this, very similar.
| | 00:34 |
I'm going to start tagging my name and huh
digital story so since I am a member of
| | 00:40 |
Flickr then it knew me.
Now you could get a whole list and then
| | 00:46 |
you pick the right one.
And now look at this.
| | 00:49 |
So it's right here and Derek will get a
notice that he has been tagged in a photo.
| | 00:56 |
And I think that's the fun part, right, so
that people that you identify in photos
| | 01:00 |
then they find out and then they come over
and look, oh yeah, I like that shot that
| | 01:04 |
was fun, now let's go back here to our
Photostream.
| | 01:09 |
So let's say everything is just rolling
along nicely, and then you get a note from
| | 01:14 |
Derrick, hey you know I don't really
want to be tagged in that photo, is it
| | 01:18 |
alright if you undo that.
So then scroll down here, you see where
| | 01:24 |
people in this photo right here we can
remove that identification just by
| | 01:29 |
clicking on the red x right there.
And now it's gone, and we come back up
| | 01:35 |
here, and there we go.
Just like that.
| | 01:38 |
So it's a fun thing, it's a very social
networking Facebook thing, and you have
| | 01:42 |
really a lot of control over it.
| | 01:45 |
| | Collapse this transcript |

|
9. Working with PhotosDeleting a photo that you've uploaded| 00:00 |
If you have a photo in your photo stream
that you, just decided that you don't want
| | 00:04 |
it there anymore, it looked good when you
first uploaded it but as you live with it
| | 00:07 |
over you time you go, nah I don't want it
in there.
| | 00:12 |
You can delete it, and that's what we're
going to do with this little guy right here.
| | 00:16 |
Just going to click on him and I'm
going to go over to our Flickr dots right here.
| | 00:21 |
Go to this popup menu, and you'll see that
we have delete a photo right here.
| | 00:26 |
I'm going to click on that.
It's going to give me a second chance to
| | 00:30 |
change my mind, but I have made up my
mind, it's going away, click on the red
| | 00:33 |
delete photo.
It looks very serious here, doesn't it?
| | 00:37 |
After it thinks for a few moments, let's
scroll down.
| | 00:44 |
And their photo is gone.
So it's very easy to delete those photos
| | 00:48 |
if you decide that they no longer deserve
a place in your photostream.
| | 00:53 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Replacing a photo that you've uploaded| 00:00 |
If you've decided after looking at a photo
for awhile that you would like it a little different.
| | 00:06 |
Maybe cropped tight or something like
that, you don't have to delete and do all
| | 00:09 |
that, you can just actually replace the
photo.
| | 00:14 |
I'm going to click on this guy right here,
I want to replace this guy.
| | 00:16 |
It needs to be cropped tighter.
I'd live with it for a while before I came
| | 00:20 |
to that conclusion, but I'm there now, so
I'm going to go to our three dots and I'm
| | 00:24 |
going to go to replace this photo.
It's going to ask me, well, what do you
| | 00:29 |
want to replace it with?
So, I happen to have one here ready to go,
| | 00:35 |
which is that.
We'll Upload it, yes, you see, I like it
| | 00:40 |
better like this.
And, look, we have been notified that our
| | 00:44 |
photo's been replaced.
Let's go back to our Photostream.
| | 00:49 |
We'll scroll down here to the bottom.
(SOUND).
| | 00:51 |
You see now, if I deleted this one and did
a new photo, then this shot would end up
| | 00:56 |
up here at the top, right?
Because that's the way the photos train
| | 01:01 |
works, it's chronological.
I didn't want it at the top.
| | 01:04 |
I wanted it next to the photo that I had
it with.
| | 01:09 |
And that's the advantage of replacing
instead of deleting and adding a new one.
| | 01:14 |
In addition to that, you notice that my
Metadata such as the title of the photo,
| | 01:19 |
remains the same.
So there's some real value to replacing a
| | 01:23 |
photo instead of deleting and adding a new
one.
| | 01:27 |
And I think the one reason why I think
it's so important is that I just want to
| | 01:30 |
keep it where it is in my Photostream.
I don't want it popping to the top.
| | 01:35 |
If that's the case for you, then use
Replace Photo.
| | 01:39 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Changing the license for a photo| 00:00 |
By default, I have my photos uploading
into Flickr with the all rights reserved licensing.
| | 00:06 |
But, I may want to change that and here's
is a good example, this is a landmark in
| | 00:10 |
Munich, Germany.
It would be nice if other people could use
| | 00:14 |
it for their newsletters or for education
and I can change the licensing on this
| | 00:17 |
photo easily, and that way they can use
it.
| | 00:22 |
And the way that I do that, is I just go
right down here, I'm just going to scroll.
| | 00:26 |
You can see right now, I have all rights
reserved but if I click on show more, we
| | 00:31 |
have some options here and I get an edit
link for the licensing.
| | 00:37 |
So, I'm going to click on edit and there
are all sorts of variations of the
| | 00:41 |
creative commons license.
And if you want to choose the exact right
| | 00:46 |
one for you, you can Google, creative
commons or you can click on this link
| | 00:49 |
right here and it will take you over to
the site.
| | 00:52 |
And they actually have a tool that will
walk you through, so you can get the exact
| | 00:56 |
right license for you.
It will be one of these here on this list
| | 00:59 |
or you can do what I'm going to do right
now, which is click on this one.
| | 01:04 |
Attribution, so they can use the photo,
but they have to give me photo credit for it.
| | 01:09 |
And non-commercial, which means they can't
make money off it.
| | 01:13 |
So I'm going to click on Save.
There's my success, and it has been
| | 01:16 |
changed right here.
So, now folks can use my photo, as long as
| | 01:20 |
they give me photo credit and they're not
making money off it.
| | 01:25 |
And it's a great way for you to allow your
work to be shared throughout the
| | 01:29 |
photography community.
| | 01:31 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Changing the location where a photo was taken| 00:00 |
If you find out that you've added the
wrong location to the photo.
| | 00:03 |
You can change it.
And you know, it could be one of things
| | 00:06 |
where your friends say you didn't take
that shot there I was with, you you took
| | 00:08 |
it over here.
So, let's change it.
| | 00:12 |
I actually put the wrong location for this
flower shot in an earlier movie and I
| | 00:15 |
want to fix that, right now.
So, we're going to come right down here.
| | 00:20 |
And if I mouse over this location, and I
click on it.
| | 00:25 |
Here it shows where we have it currently
on the map.
| | 00:29 |
Right there, and I can edit location right
here, so I'm going to click on that.
| | 00:34 |
Here's where we have it right now, this
was actually taking in Santa Rosa
| | 00:37 |
California, so I'm going to change that.
We'll hit the Go button, there we go, and
| | 00:43 |
now we'll save the location and we have
rectified the situation, I'll go ahead and
| | 00:48 |
close this.
And now we have the correct location.
| | 00:54 |
So, it''s very easy to fix, you just click
on the link, do edit location, add the
| | 00:58 |
proper location and then you can fix that
so when your friends let you know you made
| | 01:02 |
a mistake you can go, you know what?
I'll fix that right now.
| | 01:07 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Changing the date that a photo was taken or posted| 00:00 |
You can change the date that is listed for
when the photo was taken.
| | 00:05 |
Pull up the shot that you want, go to the
three Flickr dots, go up to Edit Title
| | 00:10 |
Tags, and Dates.
Click on that.
| | 00:13 |
Scroll down, and you can say, hey, you
know, actually, I took this in May instead
| | 00:19 |
of April.
Then you click save changes.
| | 00:24 |
And the date has been changed, just like
that.
| | 00:28 |
Taken on May 8th.
That's all there is to it.

10. Editing and Enhancing PhotosEnabling online editing| 00:00 |
Generally speaking, when we put our photos
into the Flickr, they're in pretty good shape.
| | 00:05 |
We've probably done something to them, but
more and more, especially with the mobile
| | 00:09 |
photography world, we may want to do a
little bit more editing once they are
| | 00:13 |
actually in this environment and we can do
that.
| | 00:18 |
I'm going to show you right now how to
enable the editing.
| | 00:22 |
And then in the subsequent movies, we're
going to walk through the tools, and
| | 00:25 |
there's a whole bunch of them and they're
pretty darn good.
| | 00:28 |
So, let's get started with this.
We'll take our flower shot here.
| | 00:33 |
The editing tools or I should say, access
to the editing tools, have been moved over
| | 00:38 |
to what's now becoming a familiar hangout
for us, the Flickr three dots right here.
| | 00:46 |
And we go right up here and we can Edit
photo.
| | 00:49 |
Now, we're actually going to another
services partner of Flickr.
| | 00:55 |
And, we can work on our photo here.
And then once we've done what we wanted to
| | 00:59 |
do, we have the option of replacing the
original photo or saving the edited
| | 01:04 |
version as another photo.
So, we have a couple of fun things to do here.
| | 01:10 |
In the next movie, we're going to talk
about cropping, and re-sizing and rotating.
| | 01:15 |
And then we'll just roll right through
these tools from there.
| | 01:19 |
So get comfortable, and here we go.
| | 01:20 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Rotating, cropping, and resizing| 00:00 |
Basic editing tools such as rotating,
re-sizing and cropping are important, and
| | 00:04 |
I'll cover those right now.
Flickr actually has a rotate command built
| | 00:09 |
right into the app.
We don't have to go to the online editor.
| | 00:13 |
I'll show you that first, but then, we're
going to go to the online editor because
| | 00:16 |
there's all sorts of great stuff there.
So, I'm going to play with this shot right here.
| | 00:22 |
If we go to our familiar Flickr three dots
right here.
| | 00:26 |
Here's the online editors, we're going to
go over there in a second, but there's
| | 00:30 |
actually a Rotate command right here in
Flickr.
| | 00:33 |
I'll click on that.
And let's say your camera doesn't
| | 00:36 |
automatically straighten them on import or
something and you just want to do a quick rotate.
| | 00:43 |
You have that right here in 90 degree
chunks.
| | 00:46 |
You just click on it, and then say Rotate
The Photo and it's rotated.
| | 00:52 |
So, this is for correction but let's go to
the online editor because I think that's
| | 00:55 |
where the real action's at.
Go right here.
| | 00:59 |
It went back to the three dots.
Edit Photo, now instead of rotate, they
| | 01:04 |
call it Orientation.
And just click on it like that, and you
| | 01:09 |
also have mirroring.
So, you can mirror your photo.
| | 01:14 |
Alright, so that's pretty cool stuff.
So, you have Orientation here, and you
| | 01:18 |
have Rotate in the actual Flickr
environment.
| | 01:21 |
Let's cancel that, it needs none of that.
I just wanted to show it to you.
| | 01:26 |
And then, you can also resize if you've
added your photo, let's say its a larger
| | 01:29 |
size than you originally wanted it to.
And you want to sample it down, you have a
| | 01:34 |
resize tool.
See, I brought it in at 1024 which is
| | 01:37 |
where I normally keep a lot of my online
photos.
| | 01:41 |
But let's say I brought in much larger,
let's say a 2048, and I want to sample it down.
| | 01:47 |
I could do that right here.
Just enter the numbers, it does the
| | 01:50 |
proportions for me, which I think is very
nice, and then sample down.
| | 01:55 |
Now, you don't want to go the other way,
generally speaking.
| | 01:57 |
You don't want to sample up where you make
the shot bigger.
| | 02:00 |
because there's a loss of quality.
That's actually better handled in your
| | 02:04 |
image editor for your computer.
So, that's sampling down.
| | 02:08 |
We're not going to sample this one down.
I like it just the way it is, except for
| | 02:12 |
one thing.
I've been looking at this shot.
| | 02:16 |
And I think it needs a little cropping.
I think cropping improves many of our photos.
| | 02:20 |
So, let's see if we can make that better.
So, I have custom crop right now, which
| | 02:26 |
means I can just do any sort of wacky
proportion I want.
| | 02:30 |
Or, if I want to lock it in, let's say I'm
going to make a print, and I know I want
| | 02:35 |
to fit the paper exactly, I can do that,
or if I'm going to make a video.
| | 02:42 |
I want to crop everything 16 by 9.
Now, I'm not going to do any of those things.
| | 02:47 |
So, I'm going to go back to custom and
let's just clean this up a bit, just sync
| | 02:50 |
that a little tighter crop would make this
a happier photo.
| | 02:55 |
So, I'll do that right there, I'll bring
that in, there we go.
| | 02:57 |
I think that's better, may be just a
little more head room above these layers
| | 03:02 |
right here.
And then, I click Apply.
| | 03:05 |
Okay, isn't that beautiful?
Alright, so I'm happy with this.
| | 03:10 |
I think I've improved the shot so I'm
going to click on Save.
| | 03:13 |
I have two options.
I can either replace the old photo, which
| | 03:18 |
I'm going to do in this case because the
whole idea was to make it look better in
| | 03:21 |
my photostream.
Or we can save it as a new copy.
| | 03:26 |
Now, that may come into play more when
we're doing things like applying effects.
| | 03:30 |
So, you could have a black and white copy
and a color copy.
| | 03:33 |
But we're going to go for replacing an old
photo right now.
| | 03:36 |
I'm not going to change any of the
metadata, and I'll just click Save Changes.
| | 03:43 |
And it brings us back to Flickr.
I think that's an improvement.
| | 03:47 |
I like it better with the tighter crop.
Let's see how it looks in our photostream.
| | 03:51 |
I'll scroll down just a bit.
All right, so that's rotating, re-sizing
| | 03:57 |
and cropping.
| | 03:58 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Working with Enhance, Brightness, and Saturation| 00:00 |
Another batch of editing tools that I
think are pretty important, and I use a
| | 00:04 |
lot are enhancing and adjusting brightness
and saturation, sort of the basic set of
| | 00:08 |
luminance tools.
And color too, right, saturation touches
| | 00:14 |
on color.
So let's take a look at these guys right here.
| | 00:18 |
I'm-ma play with this shot right now.
See, this has some possibilities.
| | 00:22 |
It's close but maybe not quite there yet.
So will go over here.
| | 00:25 |
Flickr three dots, were going to edit our
photo.
| | 00:29 |
And will start with enhanced.
A lot of times when you use the enhanced
| | 00:33 |
tool that's all you really need to do.
You're looking to do something quickly,
| | 00:37 |
and you don't want to work with the
individual sliders for saturation and
| | 00:40 |
brightness and stuff.
And there's some nice options here.
| | 00:43 |
We'll click on it.
So you have your basic enhance.
| | 00:48 |
And then you have, for a night shot, you
have night enhance.
| | 00:51 |
For a backlit shot, where the background
is brighter than your subject.
| | 00:55 |
Backlit enhance.
I don't think that's much of an enhancement.
| | 00:59 |
But.
It's there, and then you have a balance enhance.
| | 01:03 |
That one's pretty good.
So you can juts motor through these real quick.
| | 01:07 |
And if you like it, you like it.
And if you don't, then you can go to the
| | 01:10 |
individual sliders.
Some photos you can just get it with
| | 01:14 |
enhance right off the bat and move on.
We're going to play a couple different
| | 01:19 |
sliders though.
So lets look at luminance right now, and
| | 01:21 |
we'll play with brightness.
So what I'm thinking on this shot is, I
| | 01:26 |
want to bring it down a bit, because we
have these back lit leaves here that are glowing.
| | 01:32 |
And we can make them stand out more, if we
darken the background a bit, see isn't
| | 01:36 |
that kind of neat?
So I'm going to do something like that.
| | 01:40 |
Now I could go the other direction, I
could over expose but I'm not really a big
| | 01:43 |
fan of over exposure.
I like it a little bit more saturated and dark.
| | 01:49 |
Alright so we're going to go with
something like that, I'm going to go ahead
| | 01:52 |
and apply that, and now we're going to go
to Saturation.
| | 01:56 |
So what I'm thinking is I'll bring the
brightness down and then I'm going to
| | 01:59 |
increase the saturation.
So we'll do that.
| | 02:04 |
If you ever shot film, and you shot with
Fuji Velvia, this will be a familiar look
| | 02:09 |
to you.
Okay, I like that right there, so we're
| | 02:13 |
going to go with that.
I bumped up the saturation and bright down
| | 02:16 |
the brightness.
It's a different shot.
| | 02:18 |
Don't you think?
So I'm going to click Apply.
| | 02:21 |
Good.
I like it.
| | 02:23 |
I'm just going to save it, and again I'm
going to replace the old photo because I'm
| | 02:27 |
looking to improve the shot.
Not make a variation of it.
| | 02:32 |
Click save changes.
Look at that, sweet.
| | 02:37 |
A whole different shot.
Don't you think?
| | 02:40 |
Go back to our photo stream and see how it
looks with the mix.
| | 02:42 |
Oh yeah, all right, simple, few
adjustments, brightness and saturation,
| | 02:47 |
and you can end up with a completely
different shot
| | 02:51 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Sharpening and focus| 00:00 |
I'm going to play a little bit with
sharpening and focus in this movie.
| | 00:04 |
And we have a, kind of a, this nice sort
of abstracty type shot.
| | 00:11 |
It's an overpass.
All right.
| | 00:14 |
We'll play with focus first.
Focus is kind of a fun tool here.
| | 00:19 |
So, it allows me to take an area that's
going to be in focus.
| | 00:23 |
I'm just changing a circle here.
And then, everything else outside of that
| | 00:28 |
circle will be out of focus.
kind of neat.
| | 00:31 |
And you have two shapes you can do.
You can also do this, and you can rotate it.
| | 00:38 |
Sometimes you have to kind of make it to
what you want it to do.
| | 00:41 |
There we go, something like this.
Maybe, and then I'll reposition it right
| | 00:45 |
on these little rivet things right here.
Rotate it just a bit more and something
| | 00:52 |
like that.
Now, the only problem is getting that tree.
| | 00:58 |
Right.
The tree is half in focus, half not in
| | 01:00 |
focus, so that's the thing about these
things.
| | 01:03 |
Leave the tree out of it.
There, something like this.
| | 01:07 |
Okay.
So now, I've sort of said okay, I want
| | 01:09 |
your eye, when you look at this shot, to
go to this area right here and that's what
| | 01:13 |
you can use focus for.
Now, what I'd like to do is maybe just
| | 01:19 |
sharpen that up a bit, see if we can make
it pop a bit more.
| | 01:23 |
So, go ahead and click Apply on Focus, and
just go to Sharpness.
| | 01:27 |
I have to be careful with this tool.
This is not the best sharpening tool in
| | 01:31 |
the world, and it can get a little edgy
real fast.
| | 01:36 |
So, we'll just going to add a little bit
of sharpness.
| | 01:37 |
If I go to far with it here, let's see if
you can see the edginess.
| | 01:41 |
I think it's a little pixelated.
I don't know if you can tell on your
| | 01:45 |
monitor or not, but see it starts getting
a little too, what I call digital looking.
| | 01:50 |
So, I'm going to back that off a little
bit.
| | 01:53 |
Generally speaking on sharpness with this
particular tool.
| | 01:56 |
We're not in Photoshop now, we're on an
online editor for Flicker.
| | 02:01 |
Just sharpen it up a bit.
But the effects kind of cool.
| | 02:05 |
So, we've used focus and all of this has
gotten kind of soft now, we bring the
| | 02:09 |
viewers eye to this area, in the
composition, add a little bit of sharpness
| | 02:12 |
to it.
And I think we've made a more interesting
| | 02:16 |
photo, so I'm going to click Apply and now
we're going to save it.
| | 02:20 |
And I'm going to replace the shot.
Right?
| | 02:23 |
Again, I'm just trying to improve my
photos right now, process, there we go.
| | 02:30 |
kind of neat.
So, that's focus and sharpness.
| | 02:33 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Applying effects| 00:00 |
The Flickr Online Editor has effects also.
Those of you that have played with the
| | 00:05 |
mobile app know that it's fun to apply the
different filters.
| | 00:08 |
We have them here too.
They go by different names, and actually,
| | 00:12 |
I think they're different filters, but the
idea is pretty much the same, and the fun
| | 00:16 |
quotient is pretty high.
We'll take a shot that I think would
| | 00:20 |
accept different filters well.
And we're going to go over here to effects
| | 00:25 |
and here they are at the top and this is
kind of what I do with the flickr mobile
| | 00:29 |
app where I just kind of go through them
and see how the different things look.
| | 00:35 |
Kind of fun.
I might end up going with that one.
| | 00:40 |
Appeals to the guy in me for some reason.
Keytime Metropolis.
| | 00:45 |
I got a bunch of them here and you hit the
little arrow here.
| | 00:49 |
I want to show you a soft focus.
That could be nice for portaits or mood landscapes.
| | 00:55 |
You got straight black and white if you
want to do that.
| | 00:59 |
Ventura.
So some pretty nice stuff here.
| | 01:02 |
There's one that we want to show you.
Look at this.
| | 01:04 |
So it pulled the date, this is when we're
actually recording this, that part's cool
| | 01:09 |
of this metadata, way off.
Your photographer friends might, call you
| | 01:13 |
on that one there.
So I'm gona go with Dean, because I just
| | 01:17 |
like that effect.
I'll go ahead, click Apply, and save it.
| | 01:23 |
We're just going to replace the photo,
save those changes, alright.
| | 01:29 |
There we go.
So you can even make your product
| | 01:32 |
photography more interesting.
So, those are the effects that are in the
| | 01:37 |
online editing app for Flickr.
| | 01:40 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Adding text and frames| 00:00 |
One of the fun things that we can do with
this online editor is actually make a postcard.
| | 00:04 |
So when we're on the go, we can make a
postcard and then send that to someone.
| | 00:09 |
You can use two tools in the online
editor.
| | 00:14 |
We're going to use Frames, right here, and
then we'll use Text which is actually
| | 00:18 |
right over here.
Let's do our frame first, so this is from
| | 00:24 |
Olympic Village in Munich.
I use this shot to torment people who like
| | 00:29 |
things perfectly straight.
So it's a wide angle lens taken close, I
| | 00:33 |
got a little bit of distortion there.
So we'll send this to someone who that
| | 00:38 |
might drive crazy.
So we have all sorts of different frames here.
| | 00:44 |
Look at this, these are fun.
I like this one for my postcards.
| | 00:48 |
I'm going to go with Stamp, and all I have
to do is Apply that.
| | 00:51 |
And now I'm going to go to my Text tool,
which is right here, and we'll just
| | 00:57 |
highlight it.
Now Arial Black probably isn't the best
| | 01:04 |
post card font in the world, its not very
friendly.
| | 01:11 |
We have other fonts to choose from though,
look at this, all sorts of good stuff here.
| | 01:15 |
I'm going to go with this.
I like it a little bit better and I don't
| | 01:19 |
want to position there so I'm going to
drag it down here, actually I want to make
| | 01:22 |
it a little bit bigger too.
So I'll just click on it, something like that.
| | 01:28 |
Click outside of it, now just drag it.
And lets see, lets put it up here.
| | 01:34 |
So maybe we can make it a little bit
bigger huh.
| | 01:36 |
This (LAUGH) here we can drive people
crazy.
| | 01:40 |
Let's have it angled all different.
No, we won't do that.
| | 01:43 |
So we'll put it right there.
And I think I still want it a little bit bigger.
| | 01:50 |
Let's make it bigger, there we go,
something just like that.
| | 01:55 |
And we can make it a little fun.
How about that?
| | 01:58 |
We'll work with a 90 degree angle.
See, all those years, studying design in
| | 02:02 |
college will pay off at some point.
There we go, we're all set.
| | 02:06 |
So we have our postcards, I'm going to go
ahead and Apply our changes.
| | 02:09 |
If I wanted to change the color of the
type, I have these here.
| | 02:13 |
And if I wanted to add more text, I can
also do that.
| | 02:16 |
But I don't, I like it just the way it is.
Click Apply, click Save.
| | 02:23 |
Now for this one, I'm not going to replace
the shot, I want to keep the original shot
| | 02:27 |
in my Flickr Photostream, so this is going
to be a New Copy.
| | 02:32 |
And we'll just add Postcard to it just
like that, and now we'll Save those changes.
| | 02:39 |
It's fun, don't you think, yeah?
Go to our Photostream.
| | 02:45 |
And so here's our postcard, and then when
we go down we still have our original shot.
| | 02:50 |
So we have both now, so we've added an
image to our Photostream.
| | 02:54 |
So that's using Text in Frames.
You can do all sorts of creative stuff
| | 02:58 |
with it, in our case we made a postcard.
| | 03:00 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Red-eye, teeth whitening, and blemish removal| 00:00 |
We can do a little portrait editing in our
online editor here on for Flickr, and I
| | 00:05 |
added a new shot, I'm going to do a little
work on.
| | 00:10 |
So, we're going to go here to our nice
person.
| | 00:14 |
Now, for portrait work usually want to get
a little bit tighter so you can see what
| | 00:17 |
you're doing.
So, I'm going to go to Magnify tool here
| | 00:20 |
and just move my slider in.
Give us a chance to get a good look at
| | 00:25 |
what's going on.
Once I magnify, I can click and drag
| | 00:29 |
around here.
I get it positioned the way that I want.
| | 00:34 |
I'm going to show you red eye first.
We don't have red eye here, but I want to
| | 00:37 |
show you how to work the tool in in case
it rears its ugly red eyes.
| | 00:43 |
So, you just pick the appropriate size.
So, this would be too big, right here.
| | 00:49 |
So, you want it to be just on the inside
like something like this.
| | 00:55 |
You don't want to go into the white area.
Once you have the size that you want, then
| | 00:59 |
you just click and it will actually
eliminate the red eye.
| | 01:03 |
So, it works pretty well.
But we don't need that for this shot.
| | 01:09 |
So, we're going to play with whitening the
teeth, and removing a few blemishes.
| | 01:13 |
We'll whiten the teeth first.
We're going to go Hollywood here.
| | 01:17 |
Now, I probably wouldn't whiten them this
much but I want you to see the effect.
| | 01:23 |
I picked a brush that's not too big.
And then you just paint.
| | 01:26 |
I'm just clicking and dragging right now.
And we'll just brighten up that smile.
| | 01:33 |
There we go.
Look at that.
| | 01:35 |
Alright, so we have whitened the teeth,
and I'll go ahead and apply that.
| | 01:40 |
And then, I'm going to do a little bit of
blemish removal.
| | 01:43 |
I'm fairly impressed with this tool, in
that it doesn't eliminate a blemish just
| | 01:48 |
on one click.
It actually does it subtly, so you click,
| | 01:52 |
click, click, until you get what you want.
I'll pick a little bigger tool right here,
| | 01:58 |
so let's say we just work right here.
It just sort of softens it a bit.
| | 02:03 |
You just kind of clean things up.
Now, I'm not gonnachange this here, I'm
| | 02:09 |
going to leave that the way it is.
The blemish tool doesn't work that great
| | 02:13 |
on this.
It will soften it but then it just looks
| | 02:16 |
kind of smeary and smudgy and i think, you
know, looks worse.
| | 02:20 |
So, that's probably, if you wanted to do
something with that, that's probably more
| | 02:24 |
of a Photoshop thing.
Take a smaller brush here.
| | 02:28 |
Just kind of clean up a few of these
little things, just like this.
| | 02:33 |
And then we'll pick this one right here.
Alright, we didn't make her look like
| | 02:41 |
someone else.
She still looks like Mindy, but we just
| | 02:45 |
kind of tidied things up a bit.
We'll go ahead and apply this.
| | 02:49 |
I'm going to take the magnification down.
I want to show you one other thing.
| | 02:56 |
In an earlier movie, we talked about
effects.
| | 02:59 |
And I mentioned at that time that there
was a soft focus.
| | 03:04 |
And I just want to show you how that might
look on a portrait.
| | 03:07 |
And on this case, I think it's too soft.
It's you know, maybe a backlit shot of a
| | 03:13 |
bride as she's getting ready or something,
this would work.
| | 03:18 |
But here it is on this portrait, so I
don't like it, so I'm not going to use it.
| | 03:24 |
But I wanted you to see that.
Alright, I think we're set, so I'm
| | 03:27 |
going to go ahead and save.
And we're going to replace the photo,
| | 03:31 |
because we just wanted to tidy it up a
bit.
| | 03:37 |
And there we go, simple, portrait
retouching.
| | 03:40 |
It's very nice and very convenient to have
that built right into your online photo app.
| | 03:44 |

|
11. Working with Your PhotostreamCreating a set| 00:00 |
You can organize photos of like kind in a
container called a set.
| | 00:05 |
And sets are, they're right here on the
secondary nav bar.
| | 00:10 |
You can see them, and we have some sets
already.
| | 00:14 |
And we have a set of Victoria.
We have our I-5 overpasses, we have flowers.
| | 00:20 |
Look at those images, go back to viewing
all of our sets here, and while we're over
| | 00:25 |
here we can actually create a new set.
Go all the way over here to Add New Set.
| | 00:33 |
Let's do one right now.
So, this brings us to the organizer interface.
| | 00:40 |
This is the interface from previous
Flickr.
| | 00:43 |
They hung on to this.
And essentially, you just make sure that
| | 00:47 |
you're in the sets and collections area,
which you will be if you click on that
| | 00:51 |
previous link that we saw.
If you're in the organizer doing something
| | 00:56 |
else, you can always click up here on Sets
& Collections and it will bring you back
| | 01:00 |
to this spot right here.
And then all we have to do is drag the
| | 01:04 |
photos that we want in our set.
And then you can change the order, you can
| | 01:10 |
move them around.
You can do something like that.
| | 01:14 |
And then the set cover is determined by
the shot that you just drag right there.
| | 01:20 |
Tidy up a bit here.
And then we'll give it a name.
| | 01:25 |
I'll call it Photo Sport.
Now, one thing I have discovered using
| | 01:31 |
Flickr is that you actually want to add
this metadata because it will be cataloged
| | 01:36 |
by Google Search and it will show up in
searches online.
| | 01:42 |
So it's worth doing.
And I'll just write a little blurb about it.
| | 01:46 |
Okay, so we're all ready to go.
We have them in the order we want it, we
| | 01:51 |
have our cover photo.
We've added some metadata.
| | 01:56 |
Go ahead and click Save.
And let's add it to our sets; let's go to
| | 02:00 |
our Photostream.
And let's look at sets and there we go.
| | 02:06 |
We have now added a new set.
And then, the Add New Set link has moved
| | 02:10 |
down to the bottom of the stack.
So, it's pretty easy to create sets.
| | 02:15 |
And remember, just by way of reminder,
that when you're uploading a batch of
| | 02:21 |
photos in the uploader, right here, Lets
go to Desktop right now.
| | 02:28 |
But if I picked a bunch of shots, it also
gives me a chance to create a set on
| | 02:32 |
upload, so you can do that at that time
also.
| | 02:37 |
You don't have to wait 'till later.
But if you decide later on that you want
| | 02:41 |
to pull together a bunch of photos and
create a set this is the way that you do
| | 02:44 |
it
| | 02:45 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Adding photos to an existing set| 00:00 |
Once a Set is created, you can add photos
to it.
| | 00:04 |
And I have a case of that right here, I
added this shot of Victoria, after I had
| | 00:08 |
created the Sets.
It's not in there and I'd like it to be
| | 00:13 |
part of this Set, so I'm going to do that
right now.
| | 00:17 |
Let's go back up here where you get to our
Sets link, click on that, so, here's our
| | 00:22 |
set with Victoria (INAUDIBLE).
So that one shot isn't in there, I'd like
| | 00:28 |
to add it.
So, I'm just going to go to Edit, it'll
| | 00:30 |
take us to our organizer interface.
Here's the shot that I want to add, so all
| | 00:36 |
I have to do is, then, drag it up here.
And maybe I want it earlier, 'cause it
| | 00:42 |
kind of goes with the first shots, so I'm
going to put it right there, just like that.
| | 00:47 |
So, now I'm going to click Save.
Let's go back to our Photo Stream.
| | 00:52 |
Take a look at Sets, it's eight photos
now, it was seven before.
| | 00:59 |
And there she is, very easy.
And you can take photos out of the Set
| | 01:04 |
too, by the same way.
Back in Edit mode and you can take them out.
| | 01:09 |
So, if you decide you don't want one,
it'll say right here, "drag a photo or
| | 01:12 |
video here remove it from the set." But we
want to leave that in there, I just wanted
| | 01:16 |
to show you how that works.
So, that's adding and removing photos from
| | 01:21 |
a Set.
| | 01:22 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Organizing sets| 00:00 |
When you're in Sets view, let's go there
right now, and you want to see your sets
| | 00:05 |
displayed in a different order.
You can go to Organize mode, and actually
| | 00:10 |
change these.
So, what I'd like to do is move the
| | 00:14 |
backpack set over here with hiking, and
have Victoria be at the head of the pack here.
| | 00:21 |
So that's my plan.
The way I'm going to do that, is to go
| | 00:24 |
over here to our three dots, go down to
Organize.
| | 00:30 |
Once I'm in overall organizing mode here,
I will go to Sets and Collections.
| | 00:35 |
Then I'll just simply grab this thumbnail,
move it back here with Hiking, where in my
| | 00:40 |
mind it belongs.
Then I just go back to Photostream, click
| | 00:47 |
on Sets, and there we go.
Very easy to do, just remember that you
| | 00:52 |
get to organize right here at the three
dots and it's right at the bottom of the menu.
| | 00:57 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Creating collections| 00:00 |
For those of us that like to put boxes in
boxes, we can create a collection to store
| | 00:05 |
our sets.
And even though that sounds a little OCD,
| | 00:09 |
it's actually comes in handy when you
start to get a lot of sets, and you want
| | 00:14 |
to put sets of like kind in a collection.
So how does that all work?
| | 00:20 |
Well I'm going to go over here.
Here's our link to our Collections, I'm
| | 00:25 |
going to click on that.
You'll notice we don't have any yet.
| | 00:30 |
So what we're going to do is we're
going to go to Organizer to create that.
| | 00:35 |
Now, we could click on this link here, but
in case you're not in this view, I want to
| | 00:38 |
show you that you can get to it here.
And you can get to Organize here.
| | 00:47 |
Then we'll go to Sets and Collections,
that tab right there.
| | 00:50 |
So we have our Sets already, but we don't
have any Collections.
| | 00:55 |
So we can organize them using collections,
they give us a little notice here.
| | 00:58 |
Let's Create our first collection.
So we'll give it a name, I'm just going to
| | 01:04 |
call it Outdoor, and My stuff from outdoor
adventures.
| | 01:10 |
Okay, so we'll Create that.
Now all we have to do is drag the sets we
| | 01:17 |
want in our collection right here.
There we go, that's one, let's drag
| | 01:24 |
another one.
And if I want to change the orders I could
| | 01:29 |
do that also I can move these around you
can also create a mosaic for your collection.
| | 01:37 |
It will give a first tab at it for you
this looks pretty good here's our mosaic preview.
| | 01:44 |
So what it does is it pulls images from
our sets and kind a gives you an idea of
| | 01:47 |
what's in the collection.
We have a randomized link here, though.
| | 01:52 |
So you could just keep clicking it until
you see what you like.
| | 01:55 |
We'll go with this, just going to click
Save.
| | 01:59 |
Alright, I think we have done enough
damage here.
| | 02:01 |
Let's take a look and see if were were
successful.
| | 02:04 |
We're back to our home base here, our
Photostream.
| | 02:09 |
Now collections isn't in the Nav here, you
have to go over, where we were before to collections.
| | 02:16 |
And here is our outdoor collection, I'll
click on it.
| | 02:19 |
And here are our two sets within the
outdoor collection.
| | 02:23 |
Click on that, and here are photos within
one of the sets in the outdoor collections.
| | 02:29 |
As I said, boxes within boxes but when you
get a lot of boxes, it can be handy to
| | 02:33 |
organize them.
| | 02:36 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Applying changes to a batch of photos| 00:00 |
When you have to make changes to a lot of
photos, it's nice not to have to do it
| | 00:04 |
individually photo by photo.
There's a Batch Organize and I'm going to
| | 00:10 |
go over there right now.
I'm going to go to Organize right here
| | 00:13 |
from our menu.
That allows to make changes to a bunch of
| | 00:18 |
shots at once.
And there's a couple different ways to do that.
| | 00:21 |
We can pull individual photos into the
work area here.
| | 00:25 |
Or we can apply changes to a set.
So we'll do both.
| | 00:29 |
Let's just take a few random photos right
now.
| | 00:31 |
Let's grab this, this, this, and just to
be random, put that in there, something
| | 00:38 |
like that.
Now, here in Batch Organize, I can add
| | 00:42 |
tags to any images that I have in this
canvas area and you see that's its
| | 00:46 |
going to be acting on four items.
So that's nice.
| | 00:51 |
I can add people.
Again so this will be whatever you have in
| | 00:54 |
the canvas area.
You can make changes.
| | 00:58 |
Time shift that's handy if you happen to
forget to reset the time stamp on your
| | 01:02 |
camera when you travel.
You can fix that right here it's good stuff.
| | 01:08 |
You can change permissions.
For instance, licensing right here.
| | 01:13 |
So these are our all rights reserved.
And if I want to change it to Creative
| | 01:16 |
Commons, I can do that.
And then there's even a couple little edit
| | 01:22 |
photo things here, like Rotate and Delete.
This one here, titles, Tags and
| | 01:26 |
Descriptions, I'm not as crazy about it.
It doesn't really feel like batch changed
| | 01:30 |
to me and you'll see why here.
It's kind of old school, I think, so I'm
| | 01:34 |
just going to cancel that.
Alright, now, you can also apply the same
| | 01:40 |
sort of stuff to Sets and Collections.
So let's open up a set.
| | 01:46 |
Open up Victoria here.
Now, we have the pop up menu right here,
| | 01:50 |
Batch Edit.
And all of the stuff I was showing you
| | 01:54 |
before is all here too.
So if I wanted to add a new tag to the
| | 01:57 |
entire set or all the images in the set, I
can do that right here.
| | 02:03 |
And this is probably a likely scenario,
since often you have images of a like kind
| | 02:07 |
in a set.
And then when you're all done, we're just
| | 02:10 |
going to go ahead and leave to the photo
stream.
| | 02:13 |
We'll probably get a message saying, okay
they're not saved.
| | 02:18 |
That's alright.
The way the save would be is this would
| | 02:21 |
light up if we made some changes here, but
we didn't.
| | 02:24 |
So we're going to leave anyway despite the
warnings.
| | 02:28 |
And then remember you can get to the
organize area from over here also.
| | 02:33 |
So you have two ways to do it.
Very handy, when you need to make changes
| | 02:36 |
to a lot of photos and you don't want to
do it individually, Batch is definitely
| | 02:40 |
the way to go.
| | 02:42 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Creating a gallery| 00:00 |
When you're out exploring the Flickr
universe and you see shots that you like
| | 00:03 |
and you want to collect them.
Ccurate them for yourself, that's called a
| | 00:07 |
Gallery, that's what Flickr calls it.
And it's actually quite easy, you can do
| | 00:12 |
types of photos that you like or
inspirational shots.
| | 00:16 |
Right now we're looking at humming birds
and I want to have a gallery of
| | 00:20 |
hummingbird shots.
So for instance, as I look at this shot, I
| | 00:24 |
go, oh, I'd love to have this in my
hummingbird gallery.
| | 00:27 |
So I go down to the Flicker three dots
here, and I go Add to gallery.
| | 00:32 |
Now, you notice that I have a hummingbird
gallery started already, and we saw the
| | 00:38 |
check mark, so it should be added.
If I wanted to create a new galley, or if
| | 00:44 |
I hadn't created a gallery yet at all, I'd
click on this link here, and I can do that.
| | 00:49 |
And then that will be added to the gallery
list right here.
| | 00:54 |
So let's see if this worked.
I'm going to go to you, go down to
| | 00:58 |
galleries, and here we have our first
gallery right here.
| | 01:05 |
There's our hummingbird shot.
Now for my personal site, the digital story.
| | 01:12 |
I use galleries extensively.
Let me show you, here's the gallery page
| | 01:16 |
for the digital story.
For the member photo of the day.
| | 01:21 |
I'll click on that, and you can see how a
full gallery looks.
| | 01:26 |
You get to have up to 18 photos in a
gallery, and they're displayed as
| | 01:30 |
thumbnails, and then you get the larger
shots.
| | 01:35 |
All in a sequence there, go down like
that.
| | 01:38 |
And if you want to go to a particular
shot, you just click on the thumbnail and
| | 01:41 |
it'll take you right there.
Really flick, so those are galleries and
| | 01:47 |
those are your own personal archives.
You can become your own museum curator
| | 01:52 |
right here on Flickr with the shots you
think highly of.
| | 01:57 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Viewing your archives| 00:00 |
If you use Flickr over an extended period
of time, you'll accumulate a lot of photos.
| | 00:05 |
And you might not have them all in sets or
collections, but you do have them in
| | 00:08 |
archives that will help you find the stuff
that you took way back when.
| | 00:13 |
So, you're going to go over to your three
dots, go down to Archives, click on that
| | 00:19 |
and look at this.
All of these photos going , this is like
| | 00:24 |
the way back machine, so, I'm going.
Okay, I want to find that shot I think I
| | 00:29 |
took it in the summer of 2009.
And I think it was July.
| | 00:34 |
Go to July, click on that, and there's
that shot of me that I was looking for,
| | 00:38 |
right there.
Just click on that right there.
| | 00:43 |
All those shots from that set.
And those are in the archives.
| | 00:47 |
Very easy to get to under your three dots.
Chronological order, everything that you
| | 00:52 |
have added to Flicker over time is right
here on this page.
| | 00:57 |

|
12. Participating in the Flickr CommunityAdding a comment to a photo| 00:00 |
I'm going to talk a little bit about
commenting on photos.
| | 00:03 |
Not our own photos, but photos by other
people.
| | 00:06 |
Let them know what we think.
And this is a big part of social
| | 00:10 |
networking and Flickr and all that good
stuff.
| | 00:13 |
So, let's go to our Flickr home page,
because if we do that, we can see what our
| | 00:18 |
contacts have been up to and here we go,
so we have a nice big photo here from the
| | 00:22 |
digital story.
So, if I want, right here on our homepage
| | 00:29 |
with our contacts showing, I can comment
on this photo without even going over to
| | 00:33 |
the digital story site.
Just go down here to my little comment
| | 00:40 |
thing and say okay that looks good.
So I'll go ahead and post that comment
| | 00:45 |
right there.
And you see now we have a one, so this is
| | 00:48 |
the first comment for this photo.
The photo just went up shortly and we're
| | 00:53 |
first on board.
Now, if I wanted to, I could also just go
| | 00:58 |
over to the site, and here we are in what
I call the big picture view.
| | 01:04 |
And I could click on the comment here
although, clicking on the Comment icon of
| | 01:08 |
course just takes us to right here.
But we'll do it anyway.
| | 01:13 |
I'll go ahead and post that.
So, that is the old-fashioned way of doing things.
| | 01:22 |
So we'll go back to our home page right
now.
| | 01:26 |
But it's nice to comment on people's
stuff, and I think all of us appreciate
| | 01:29 |
feedback, and even if the person has a
question about, well why did you choose to
| | 01:33 |
shoot it from that angle, or what is it
about this lighting that attracts you.
| | 01:40 |
Most of the time the photographer will
respond to you.
| | 01:42 |
So if you want to have a conversation
about an image that you find interesting,
| | 01:45 |
or you're just trying to figure out what
the photographer was thinking, comments
| | 01:49 |
are a great way to do that.
| | 01:52 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Viewing recent activity on your photos| 00:00 |
If you want to see recent activity, what's
going on with your site, especially in
| | 00:04 |
terms of what other people are thinking,
we have a link for you.
| | 00:08 |
Go to You, go to Recent Activity, it will
bring us to this page here.
| | 00:15 |
And you get to see what's going on.
So, one person marked a shot as a favorite.
| | 00:21 |
Couple people commented on shots.
And then, in terms of action going on with
| | 00:26 |
contacts, people adding you as a contact,
things like that, that all shows up here
| | 00:31 |
on the recent activities page.
You get to see it all collected in one
| | 00:37 |
neat place, and again that's under You >
Recent Activity.
| | 00:42 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Marking a photo as a favorite| 00:00 |
If a photo resonates with you, if you like
it, and you want to keep it with your favorites.
| | 00:05 |
Very easy to do.
Just as you're looking at the image.
| | 00:08 |
Again, we're on our Flickr homepage where
our contacts and images are showing.
| | 00:13 |
We can mark it as a favorite right here on
this page.
| | 00:16 |
Just click it right there.
Only one person has marked that as a favorite.
| | 00:20 |
And then if I go down the page here.
If I want to instead of just marking it
| | 00:27 |
right here, if I want to maybe find out
more about the photo.
| | 00:32 |
See what's going on here or maybe see what
some other folks have said.
| | 00:35 |
Okay yeah.
And you know what?
| | 00:38 |
I like this shot a lot.
I'm going to add it as a favorite also.
| | 00:42 |
Click on it right there.
And we get added to the list of fans.
| | 00:46 |
So Favorites are a terrific way of letting
the photographer know that you like the shot.
| | 00:52 |
And then just by clicking on that link,
you can see all the shots that you have
| | 00:56 |
marked as favorites.
Very handy, very nice.
| | 01:01 |
And I like looking at my favorites.
I go back and I go, Oh, yeah, I remember
| | 01:05 |
when I saw that shot a few years ago and
really liked it and get a nostalgic
| | 01:08 |
feeling about it.
It's fun and its great for the person
| | 01:12 |
receiving the favorite too.
| | 01:15 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Adding contacts| 00:00 |
If you feel like you want to get a little
bit more activity on your Flickr page, the
| | 00:04 |
best way to do that is add some contacts.
Get other people involved.
| | 00:09 |
Usually, when you add someone as a
contact, most of the time they will add
| | 00:12 |
you back.
So, I'm going to go up to Contacts, go to
| | 00:16 |
Add Contacts.
Now, Flickr will make suggestions for you.
| | 00:23 |
It'll add friends for you, and you can
pick those.
| | 00:27 |
Also, if you want, you can pick up people
from your existing contacts list from
| | 00:32 |
Gmail or Yahoo!, Facebook, Google, or you
can send invites.
| | 00:39 |
Just add their e-mail address, their name,
check the box.
| | 00:42 |
Look, they even give you a little boiler
plate here.
| | 00:45 |
I would probably change that boiler plate.
I don't know, just a word of advice there.
| | 00:50 |
But anyway, you can invite people to come
on over and become your friend here on Flickr.
| | 00:56 |
And by doing so, like I said, if you add
people as a contact, they will generally
| | 01:00 |
add you back.
And you find that of course, under
| | 01:03 |
Contacts > Add Contacts, right here.
| | 01:06 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Knowing when someone adds you as a contact| 00:00 |
In the previous movie I talked about
adding people as a contact.
| | 00:04 |
Well, how do you know when someone adds
you?
| | 00:06 |
Right?
Well, the easiest thing to do is just go
| | 00:09 |
to your Flickr homepage, just click on
Flickr right there, bring you to the homepage.
| | 00:16 |
And in this big column here, you get to
see all sorts of activity including, look
| | 00:20 |
at this as I scroll down here, people that
added us as a contact, right here.
| | 00:26 |
And what's really neat here is, remember
if you listen to the previous movie, how I
| | 00:29 |
said that if you add someone as a contact,
they'll probably add you back.
| | 00:34 |
Well, Flickr encourages that (INAUDIBLE)
to get a big Add button right here and if
| | 00:38 |
you want, go to their photo stream first
before you add them.
| | 00:43 |
Which actually, I suggest, I do this
myself.
| | 00:47 |
I like to see what kind of pictures
they're taking because, if I don't like
| | 00:50 |
their brand of photography, remember it's
going to be showing up here big as life on
| | 00:54 |
my page.
So, you might want to take a look at their
| | 00:58 |
shots first by clicking on the photo
stream then, if you like their photography
| | 01:02 |
add them back as a contact.
That way you'll know that the photos that
| | 01:06 |
you see on your homepage will probably be
stuff that you're interested in.
| | 01:11 |
But you can follow that activity right
here just click on the Flickr icon, bring
| | 01:15 |
it to your homepage and you can see all
the good stuff that's going on including
| | 01:18 |
folks that have added you as a contact.
| | 01:21 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Managing FlickrMail| 00:00 |
Flickr has its own built-in email system
and we are going to take a look at that
| | 00:04 |
and answer the burning question, what does
this little number mean up here by my icon?
| | 00:11 |
That actually means the number of unopened
pieces of mail you have waiting for you.
| | 00:16 |
So if you're wondering what's going on up
there, it means that you have two pieces
| | 00:20 |
of mail waiting to be read.
And to do that, you just mouse over, and
| | 00:25 |
you go over here to Flickr mail.
And it brings us to the mail area.
| | 00:33 |
This is old Flickr view we're in right
now, not the new look and you have a
| | 00:36 |
couple different areas.
You have your inbox.
| | 00:40 |
And then the breakout contact
notifications.
| | 00:43 |
Which I actually appreciate.
because the inbox is going to be when
| | 00:46 |
other Flickr members send you notes.
Or Flickr themselves send you a note.
| | 00:53 |
That'll be here.
And then the contact notifications are
| | 00:56 |
exactly that.
This is just where you are being notified
| | 00:58 |
that people have added you as a contact,
which is nice to know.
| | 01:03 |
And then, if you set mail, which we
haven't, that'll be right here, and here
| | 01:07 |
we get a little dash of that Flickr humor
that we like so much, so that's nice of them.
| | 01:15 |
A little smiley face and everything.
And then, once I open up a piece of mail here.
| | 01:20 |
Look at this, the number goes down.
We're going to return to our message list
| | 01:25 |
and let's read our welcome message.
Look at this.
| | 01:28 |
They brought us a basket of fruit, we just
moved in.
| | 01:32 |
Just like that and now we're done.
So that is mail here in Flickr, and just
| | 01:37 |
remember that it lives over here with your
buddy icon.
| | 01:42 |
In that if you see number up there that
just means that you've got mail
| | 01:47 |

13. Participating in GroupsWhat are groups?| 00:00 |
So, if you like hanging out with other
people who have similar interests as you,
| | 00:05 |
you might enjoy the Groups aspect of
Flickr.
| | 00:09 |
Now you get to it up here under
communities.
| | 00:12 |
And I'm going to show you, I'm on digital
story right now, so I'm going to show you
| | 00:16 |
my groups lists there.
So, I have created a group which we'll
| | 00:20 |
talk about in an upcoming movie.
And then I'm a member of a number of groups.
| | 00:26 |
And think of these as like birds of a
feather.
| | 00:29 |
Here, you have some insights about me.
Things that I'm interested in.
| | 00:32 |
Micro four thirds.
Canon Powershot 9D.
| | 00:36 |
Low pro stuff.
And yes, puppies, I admit it.
| | 00:40 |
Fill flash.
All that kind of stuff.
| | 00:42 |
These are things that I'm interested in,
so I joined these groups.
| | 00:45 |
And I can add photos to these groups, and
I can look at what other people are doing.
| | 00:51 |
So, again it's a community of shared
interests and I think they're kind of fun.
| | 00:56 |
And we're going to explore a little bit
about how to join a group in an upcoming movie.
| | 01:01 |
And then also if you want how to start
your own group so you can start your own club.
| | 01:06 |
Let's get to that right now.
| | 01:08 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Joining and contributing to a group| 00:00 |
So if you want to join a group, how do you
do that?
| | 00:03 |
Well, I think first of all, you have to
find a group to join and, fortunately,
| | 00:07 |
there are a lot of groups here to chose
from.
| | 00:10 |
Couple ways to do that, you can Search
Groups right here and also, under
| | 00:14 |
communities, you search groups.
So let's search, I am going to search for,
| | 00:24 |
let's say, Macro Photography.
We have some filters, so I can search from
| | 00:32 |
within my groups, but since I don't have
any yet, really, I'm just going to search
| | 00:36 |
All Groups here.
So there is a group called Macro
| | 00:42 |
Photography, Macro Magic.
So, lot's of groups here.
| | 00:47 |
And you can go to a group, and explore it.
Let's see what's going on here in Macro Photography.
| | 00:53 |
So you can take a look and go wow I like
these shots.
| | 01:01 |
So if you decide that this is the kind of
place that you want to hang out then you
| | 01:04 |
can join this group.
Click on the Join This Group button right here.
| | 01:11 |
(SOUND).
Now sometimes thee will be rules and
| | 01:15 |
regulations or criteria.
That'll say, you know we don't want you to
| | 01:19 |
upload more than five shots a week, or
something like that.
| | 01:23 |
If there are such rules then you will get
that when you click on the join group button.
| | 01:28 |
They'll share that with you.
This group here, they're what we call a
| | 01:32 |
totally open group, and basically all you
have to do is join.
| | 01:36 |
Now if I want to contribute to this group,
I'll show you how to do that.
| | 01:40 |
It's really kind of fun.
We'll go to the Photostream and let's, so
| | 01:45 |
I want to contribute this right here.
So now I just pick my shot.
| | 01:54 |
I go over here to the Flickr three dots
and I want to Add to a group.
| | 02:03 |
I scroll through all the stuff here.
Here's my Macro Photography.
| | 02:07 |
This is the group I want to add it to.
Click on that, and we're done.
| | 02:12 |
Let's go to my Groups List, Micro
Photogrpahy.
| | 02:18 |
There I am, look at that.
Now we'll see what the other Macro guys
| | 02:25 |
say about my shot, right?
(LAUGH).
| | 02:28 |
So, just like that, I am now part of the
community.
| | 02:31 |
I get to see what other folks are doing.
I can contribute.
| | 02:34 |
It's birds of a feather.
It's a lot of fun and seriously, I highly
| | 02:38 |
encourage it.
| | 02:39 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Starting and administering your own group| 00:00 |
If you want to start your own group, it's
easy enough to do.
| | 00:03 |
We'll go up here to Communities.
Go to Create a Group.
| | 00:09 |
Now you have to decide, what type of group
do you want?
| | 00:12 |
Now, generally speaking, most of the
groups on Flickr are public, for anyone to join.
| | 00:17 |
That's kind of the idea.
Here there's a great way to meet the
| | 00:20 |
photographers, but you can create an
invitation only group, or a Private group.
| | 00:27 |
So its up to you, you got these different
options.
| | 00:29 |
We're going to go ahead and Create a
Public group.
| | 00:33 |
I have to give it a name and what's it
about.
| | 00:39 |
Our Group safety level.
Well, I think kittens and puppies is
| | 00:42 |
probably safe for everyone.
So, we'll leave that, and go to next.
| | 00:49 |
Now, non-members, so people who haven't
actually joined the group yet, what will
| | 00:53 |
they get to see?
And generally speaking, I like them to be
| | 00:56 |
able to see everything.
Both the discussion that's going on.
| | 01:00 |
Each group has a built in forum, and then
also the photo poll, which is all the
| | 01:04 |
contribution from group members.
So we're going to leave both of those
| | 01:08 |
boxes checked.
If you feel differently then uncheck accordingly.
| | 01:14 |
And then you just get to name the
different functions of the group.
| | 01:18 |
The Admin, the moderator and the member.
And then once you do that click All Done.
| | 01:24 |
I'm actually not going to do that right
now.
| | 01:27 |
And once you do click All Done, you will
have created a group, and it will after a
| | 01:31 |
period of time look something like this.
Where you have contributing photos.
| | 01:38 |
You have Discussion, where people can talk
about stuff and comment.
| | 01:45 |
And then of course, when you click on the
More Photos, you get that nice, more new
| | 01:50 |
style view of things.
So that's under Communities.
| | 01:55 |
You go to Create a Group.
And you can start your own birds of a
| | 01:59 |
feather, and it's a lot of fun.
| | 02:02 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
|
|
14. ExploringExploring the Explore page| 00:00 |
We're going to explore the Explore page.
Now, Explore is up here on the top Nav bar.
| | 00:06 |
And if you mouse over it, you'll see that
there are sub categories, which also when
| | 00:10 |
you're on the explore page show up right
here.
| | 00:14 |
But if you just click on Explore itself,
this is where you end up, right here.
| | 00:19 |
And I find this a great place for
inspiring photography.
| | 00:25 |
You know, whenever I just want to look at
pictures that I think are neat, or to get
| | 00:29 |
my creative juices going, this is where I
come and I check it probably once a day.
| | 00:36 |
It's a, it's a nice thing to do during
coffee, stuff like that, maybe during your break.
| | 00:41 |
And just come and look, and these are
photos contributed by Flickr members and
| | 00:46 |
curated by the Flickr editors.
And it's just a fantastic place to see
| | 00:50 |
what's going on in the world of
photography.
| | 00:54 |
Now, in upcoming movies we're going to
take a look at some different areas of explore.
| | 00:59 |
And, I think all of them really are worth
our time.
| | 01:03 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Perusing The Commons| 00:00 |
Under Explore, we're now in the commons
area, and before the internet, you would
| | 00:04 |
have to go to somewhere like the Library
of Congress, get access to the archives,
| | 00:08 |
to see photos now that are just waiting
for you right here in this environment.
| | 00:15 |
So this is a collection of the world's
public photography archives and you can
| | 00:20 |
see a number of the participating
institutions here, and as you scroll down
| | 00:25 |
the page, you get samples of some of the
stuff that's available.
| | 00:32 |
And it's really something else.
And if you're doing research, you can
| | 00:35 |
search through these archives for images.
A lot of the shots, for example, here,
| | 00:40 |
let's click on this one.
They have added notes or they have tried
| | 00:45 |
to identify people or elements in the
photo.
| | 00:50 |
And then, if you scroll down the page you
can get more information about the
| | 00:54 |
comments itself.
And they even have FAQ.
| | 00:58 |
So again, this is something that is a real
luxury these days.
| | 01:02 |
We can just sit in our living room and
explore the world's photography archives
| | 01:07 |
right there on our laptop or our iPad.
And this is the Commons area.
| | 01:12 |
It's under Explore, right here on Flickr.
It's truly amazing.
| | 01:17 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Looking at the Getty collection| 00:00 |
Here we are on the explore page.
Now let's jump over to the Getty collection.
| | 00:04 |
This is stock photography area of Flickr.
So Flickr members can contribute to the
| | 00:11 |
Getty collection of course with approval
and then you can also peruse this
| | 00:16 |
collection and license images for various
uses for products and newsletters and
| | 00:22 |
advertising, and all that kind of stuff.
And they do a pretty good job of
| | 00:29 |
explaining what's going on here.
There's a fair amount of information.
| | 00:34 |
And they give you some sample galleries
and recent additions to the Getty collection.
| | 00:40 |
I'll click on one right now.
So, for example, you know, this, this was
| | 00:44 |
contributed by a Flickr member and a
member of the Getty liked it.
| | 00:49 |
And they worked out an agreement as far as
licensing goes and now it's available for
| | 00:53 |
you and me to license through the Getty
collection.
| | 00:58 |
So it's worth taking a look at, again,
this is a stock photography area.
| | 01:03 |
It's different, then for instance when we
were in the comments and that is you know,
| | 01:07 |
publicly held photograph.
This you would license the images from
| | 01:12 |
Getty if you wanted to use them for a
specific purpose.
| | 01:17 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Exploring the galleries| 00:00 |
In an earlier movie, I talked about
creating your own gallery and creating a
| | 00:04 |
collection of images around a topic or
that you find inspiring.
| | 00:08 |
Well, when a bunch of people do that, you
can imagine that there's probably some
| | 00:12 |
pretty interesting stuff out there.
So, one of the things that we have under
| | 00:16 |
Explore is Galleries.
And they'll do a featured Gallery and then
| | 00:22 |
you can scroll down the page here and
these are all galleries that have been
| | 00:26 |
curated by Flickr members.
Some pretty neat stuff.
| | 00:32 |
Beautiful sheep gallery.
(INAUDIBLE) That's kind of fun and if you
| | 00:36 |
see something you like, Just click on it,
and here's the familiar gallery format.
| | 00:43 |
There can be a maximum of 18 photos in
here.
| | 00:47 |
Look at that.
So if you're a big fan of sheep.
| | 00:51 |
Then this is the gallery specifically for
you.
| | 00:54 |
So this is a fun page.
I actually really like to see how people
| | 00:58 |
have curated their own galleries based on
certain topics.
| | 01:04 |
And every time you refresh or hit the More
Please, you'll be presented with different galleries.
| | 01:08 |
And it just goes on and on and on.
And the next thing you know it's two in
| | 01:11 |
the morning and you need to go to bed.
So, this is the Gallery feature under
| | 01:16 |
explore right here you go to explore and
you can get to it right there.
| | 01:21 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Charting the World Map| 00:00 |
You want to see what's going on in the
rest of the world?
| | 00:03 |
Let's go on our tour here.
We'll go to explore and choose the World Map.
| | 00:08 |
We can either choose it here or right here
in the Nav bar.
| | 00:12 |
And what we get is exactly that, a map
with pictures from all these different places.
| | 00:18 |
So, we can see what's going on India,
right now, and then let's go up to Norway.
| | 00:27 |
Now ,they're showing us by interesting,
but we can filter it by recent, so you can
| | 00:31 |
see photos that are a bit more current.
Go to Japan.
| | 00:38 |
That's what happening in Japan, right now.
But you'll notice as we're looking at the
| | 00:43 |
map here, that for instance, we don't see
anything going on in Greenland at the
| | 00:48 |
moment, or Iceland.
Now, Iceland is such a beautiful place,
| | 00:53 |
there's got to be something going on here.
So, we'll go down here and search the map.
| | 00:58 |
And let's see what's going on in Iceland.
ha, as I suspected.
| | 01:05 |
There's plenty going on in Iceland.
Look at this stuff.
| | 01:09 |
See, now that is.
That's spectacular.
| | 01:15 |
So, if you're not initially presented with
stuff that you're interested in then all
| | 01:19 |
you have to do is use the search the map
link right here.
| | 01:24 |
You can also search for specific items
too.
| | 01:27 |
As they say here architecture, forest et
cetera, in the location click go and then
| | 01:32 |
see what's going on in other parts of the
world.
| | 01:36 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Accessing the App Garden| 00:00 |
If you want to see what's growing in the
App Garden, as Flickr calls it, go to Explorer.
| | 00:06 |
And here's the link right here to App
Garden, and it will bring you right here,
| | 00:10 |
and there is all sorts of interesting
stuff.
| | 00:14 |
I just had to stay right here, because I
discovered this app here in the App Garden
| | 00:18 |
horse lover's camera that let's you add
horses into your photos in the view finder
| | 00:22 |
for you to take the picture, or add them
(LAUGH) after you take the shot.
| | 00:29 |
And you know what, (LAUGH) I think this is
spectacular.
| | 00:32 |
As you go down the list here, you will see
all sorts of stuff.
| | 00:36 |
There's a lot of interesting apps in here.
Some deal with things like analytics,
| | 00:42 |
social tracking, good old photo stuff.
So, it's a place where developers hang out
| | 00:48 |
and present their applications, a lot of
them are free or very affordable.
| | 00:53 |
And if you're interested in that kind of
stuff, just something a little different,
| | 00:56 |
or if you're a horse lover, then this is
the place to come and check it out.
| | 01:02 |

| Finding cameras with the Camera Finder| 00:00 |
Here's in area in Explorer that the nerd
in me really loves, and it's called the
| | 00:05 |
Camera Finder and it's right here in our
menu.
| | 00:11 |
And you can see what's going on because
all cameras, you know, identify themselves
| | 00:15 |
in photo metadata and flickr collects data
and then it presents it to us on this page here.
| | 00:22 |
So you can see the most popular cameras in
the flickr community at the moment, and it
| | 00:27 |
has been for some time now, the iPhone 4S,
number one camera with flickr users.
| | 00:33 |
Going all the way down, we have the DSL,
the most popular DSL is, 5D Mark II.
| | 00:40 |
You can also see by category, point, shoot
cameras, camera phones themselves.
| | 00:46 |
And then, as you go down the page, you can
drill down and see what else's going on
| | 00:50 |
and get a complete listing.
So this is pretty neat stuff.
| | 00:55 |
Now, once you sort of absorb the data
itself, if you want to see some of images
| | 00:59 |
that people are doing with these devices,
you just click on the link.
| | 01:05 |
Get a little information about the camera
itself and then Flickr will present to you
| | 01:10 |
some photos.
All this with a camera phone, who would
| | 01:14 |
have thought a few years ago?
So this is a terrific area, it's a Camera
| | 01:19 |
Finder and it's part of Explorer.
And you can look up your camera and see
| | 01:24 |
what other people are doing with the same
tools that you're using.
| | 01:28 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Reading the Flickr blog| 00:00 |
Flickr maintains it's own blog.
Now, primarily, they use it to highlight
| | 00:05 |
photos and tell stories.
Sometimes, they'll talk about new
| | 00:09 |
features, in fact, when Flickr announced
it's redesign, it was a post here on the blog.
| | 00:16 |
Here they're talking about what's new in
the commons area, which we looked at a
| | 00:19 |
little bit earlier.
But you can just take a look, I'll just
| | 00:22 |
give you a just a taste of what's going on
here.
| | 00:26 |
As they find some photos or some work by a
particular photographer that they think is
| | 00:30 |
super interesting, they might feature it
on the blog here also.
| | 00:34 |
So, it's a blog that visually, it's a very
high quality blog.
| | 00:39 |
There is some news mixed in and might be
worth a peak every now and then.
| | 00:44 |
The way that you get to it, now, we
sort of have lost our Nav bar here.
| | 00:48 |
So, I'm just going to hit the Back button,
so, I can just show you how to get here.
| | 00:52 |
Is under Explore, and it's the bottom item
right there, Flickr blog.
| | 00:57 |
And that will take you to it.
| | 00:58 |

|
15. Tips and Advanced TechniquesSingle-key keyboard shortcuts| 00:00 |
If you spend a lot of time in Flickr, it
might be worth becoming familiar with the
| | 00:04 |
keyboard shortcuts.
Now, I've talked about a few of them as
| | 00:08 |
we've been working through this title.
For example hitting the Arrow key to move
| | 00:12 |
from one shot to the next, I'm hitting the
right arrow key right now.
| | 00:17 |
Or to hit the L key to go into Light Box
mode and then the L key again to come back out.
| | 00:27 |
However there are a whole bunch more and
if you do the Question mark.
| | 00:32 |
In this case I'll do Shift+Question Mark,
It will show them to you right here, look
| | 00:37 |
at that.
And there's a lot of them.
| | 00:40 |
So you have shortcut keys for adding an
image to favorites, fav this photo, for example.
| | 00:47 |
Now there's one little bit of business
that you have to do.
| | 00:51 |
You have to make sure that this box is
checked, Enable Keyboard Shortcuts.
| | 00:57 |
And there's another place that it's also
available.
| | 01:01 |
Is if you go to your Settings, and you go
to Sharing and Extending.
| | 01:06 |
Right down at the bottom of the page here,
Keyboard Shortcuts Enabled.
| | 01:11 |
And there's an Edit button there where you
can change that.
| | 01:15 |
Okay, so that's pretty nifty.
We'll go back to the Photo stream here.
| | 01:20 |
But once you do, they are always available
to you, and again while you're in Flickr
| | 01:25 |
just hit the Shift+Question Mark to bring
them up.
| | 01:29 |
And now you can navigate Flickr just like
a seasoned veteran.
| | 01:34 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Printing your Flickr images| 00:00 |
Looking at your pictures online, on your
computer screen, on your iPhone, on your
| | 00:05 |
Samsung Galaxy is fun and they look great.
But sometimes you just want a print that
| | 00:11 |
you can just hand to somebody and say,
here, here's a photograph that I made.
| | 00:16 |
While you're in Flickr, you can just order
prints directly from this application.
| | 00:22 |
Go over here to your Flickr dots, and at
the bottom of the menu here, look at this
| | 00:25 |
Order Prints and More.
Now, Snapfish is the partner with Flickr
| | 00:32 |
for printing so, I can order my 4 by 6
prints, my 5 by 7 prints.
| | 00:39 |
It will calculate the price for me.
Now, if you watched the movie on the
| | 00:44 |
cropping tool, that's where that comes in
handy.
| | 00:48 |
Because you can crop your Flickr images,
save them as separate shots, so that when
| | 00:53 |
you order 8 by 10 print the image is on
the paper exactly as you want.
| | 00:59 |
Because the proportions for 8 by 10 and 5
by 7 are very different.
| | 01:04 |
So, that's where that constrain parts of
the cropping tool come in very handy.
| | 01:08 |
Also, if you want, you can order all sorts
of other goodies.
| | 01:12 |
Photo books, calendars, photo cards,
collages, canvas, all right here.
| | 01:18 |
Just add it to your cart and you go
through the normal check-out procedure and
| | 01:22 |
then in the mail, and I mean, the regular
mail, your stuff will appear.
| | 01:27 |
So, yes, you can still go analog, even
though we have this very high tech digital
| | 01:32 |
app right here on our computer screen.
| | 01:36 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Viewing your stats| 00:00 |
So, over time there are statistics
associated with your Flickr site.
| | 00:05 |
And, they will share them with you, which
is more than I can say for some other sites.
| | 00:10 |
Now, the way that you get to that, is you
go up to You, and you go to Stats, and
| | 00:14 |
here's what you see.
Now, they're not automatically enabled.
| | 00:20 |
You have to have them activated, but it's
not a big deal all you have to do is just
| | 00:24 |
click on the Yes, Activate me, and they'll
let you know.
| | 00:29 |
I think when I did it for digital story it
was like within a half and hour I heard
| | 00:33 |
from them and they'll give you all this
information and actually I can show you.
| | 00:40 |
Here are the Stats for the digital story
site, so you can actually see what's going on.
| | 00:45 |
You can see View counts which is what
we're looking at right here.
| | 00:49 |
So you can see whats going on today,
yesterday with photos and videos.
| | 00:55 |
Your all time View counts, Photostream,
Sets, Collections and Galleries.
| | 01:01 |
Let me scroll down here, and you can see
what's most viewed today, this is looking
| | 01:07 |
at today.
Refers, there's a lot of good stuff here.
| | 01:15 |
All available to you, and especially after
you've been using your site for a while,
| | 01:18 |
it's very handy and it just.
Kind of let's you take a look at trending
| | 01:24 |
and get a nice analytical review of the
shots that people like.
| | 01:29 |
And not only views and fave, often are
being favored things like that.
| | 01:34 |
So again, you have to enable it.
And to get started with it you just go up
| | 01:39 |
to You, go to Stats, enable it and then
it''ll let you know.
| | 01:43 |
And then you can see what's going on with
your site from an analytical point of view.
| | 01:48 |

| Seeing what's popular on your Flickr page| 00:00 |
In addition to looking at Stats, you could
also just see what's popular.
| | 00:05 |
They have a Popular category for your
site.
| | 00:08 |
We're on The Digital Story site right now,
and I'm going to go up here, and I'm going
| | 00:11 |
to go down here to Popular.
And then they rank the photos by views,
| | 00:18 |
and how many people count this as a
favorite, and comments.
| | 00:25 |
So that one had 63 faves.
It's really interesting, again, when
| | 00:31 |
you're looking at your photography.
You know you come to it with I think
| | 00:35 |
certain preconceived ideas of what's good
and what isn't.
| | 00:39 |
One of the things that I like about Flickr
is that you can see what other people
| | 00:43 |
think is good.
And sometimes it helps you just sort of calibrate.
| | 00:48 |
And I'm not saying that you need to shoot
for what's always popular.
| | 00:52 |
But I think it helps you understand the
types of images that you take that
| | 00:56 |
resonate with other people.
So for that effect, I think it's worth
| | 01:01 |
taking a look at this page every now and
then.
| | 01:04 |
Just to see of all the shots that I've
published on the site, you know, these are
| | 01:08 |
the ones that seem to really resonate with
folks.
| | 01:12 |
And some of them are surprises.
I know when I put this one up recently, I
| | 01:16 |
did it more as kind of a travel log photo
and people really liked it.
| | 01:23 |
And it actually ends up on the popular
page and what they liked about it were the
| | 01:27 |
soft colors.
And that's something that hadn't really
| | 01:31 |
occurred to me.
There we go, so, this is where you're
| | 01:34 |
looking at your images from other people's
perspective can be very image.
| | 01:40 |
So, that's Popular and the way to get to
that as I mentioned at the top of the
| | 01:45 |
movie is this right here, new year three
dots, and it'll be in your popup menu.
| | 01:52 |
After you've had some shots up for a
while, take a look and see what other
| | 01:54 |
people, are liking about your stuff.
| | 01:57 |

| Reviewing your Flickr profile| 00:00 |
A lot of what we've been talking about is
other people's work and what's going on in
| | 00:05 |
the Flickr universe.
So, let's just focus on you for a minute
| | 00:10 |
and I'm going to show you a spot where you
can see all things you.
| | 00:15 |
We'll go over here, and go down to profile
right here.
| | 00:19 |
It's under the Three Dots menu.
We're on our Photostream page right now.
| | 00:25 |
Click on Profile.
It's all about you here.
| | 00:28 |
Look at this.
So, you can manage your profile, have all
| | 00:31 |
the links on the settings from that.
You can see photos of you, and this is
| | 00:36 |
where people have tagged, this case me.
Here is some of the information that I am
| | 00:42 |
putting out to the world.
Favorite photos from other Flickr members,
| | 00:46 |
some of my contacts and of course you can
always see more.
| | 00:50 |
And give us more, more, more.
Some of the groups, calories, you know,
| | 00:54 |
they kind of put it all on one page.
I don't have any testimonials, wow, all
| | 00:59 |
this time.
Testimonials probably aren't as popular as
| | 01:03 |
they once were or people just really don't
have anything to say about me, which is okay.
| | 01:10 |
So, this is my profile page.
So, I think it's convenient, it's a nice
| | 01:14 |
place to sort of manage a lot of stuff or
reveal a lot of stuff, just to make sure
| | 01:17 |
that it's current and it's the way that
you want.
| | 01:21 |

| Editing your cover photo| 00:00 |
So when you set up a new Flickr account or
your account gets moved to the new look in
| | 00:05 |
Flickr, as we've all experienced now,
Flickr will add a cover photo for you.
| | 00:11 |
That is, something to get you started, but
at some point you might want to add your
| | 00:15 |
own cover photo.
And you notice that when I mouse over the
| | 00:19 |
cover photo here, I get this button right
here to edit cover photo, and I click on that.
| | 00:25 |
And I can either choose an image from my
existing photo stream, or I can upload a photo.
| | 00:31 |
I'm going to go ahead and I'll just go
ahead and choose one right here.
| | 00:36 |
Now once that it has been selected, we can
drag the image into position here just
| | 00:42 |
like this.
And once it's the way that we like we can
| | 00:47 |
go ahead and save it.
And now we have a new cover photo, and you
| | 00:53 |
can change this on a regular basis, it's
very easy to do as you just saw so you can
| | 00:58 |
even go with your mood.
So for instance if you want to go, I'm in
| | 01:04 |
a fall color mood today, and I want to
change my cover photo just go here and
| | 01:08 |
we'll scroll down.
You can experiment.
| | 01:13 |
In this case, you can just position it so
it works out nicely where the leaves just
| | 01:16 |
work right around the name right there.
I go oh I like that.
| | 01:21 |
Click Save.
And there you go.
| | 01:23 |
Now one thing that I've discovered, this
seems like abstract photos work very
| | 01:28 |
nicely for this.
And especially where you have soft areas,
| | 01:32 |
that's the type to go against, like the
shot right here.
| | 01:35 |
So that is changing the cover photo.
It's easy.
| | 01:38 |
You can pull from your photo stream, or
you can just pull from images right off
| | 01:43 |
your computer.
| | 01:45 |

| Grabbing the embed code| 00:00 |
So as you're working with your images.
And you decide that, hey, I would love to
| | 00:05 |
embed a shot in an HTML page.
It could be in a blog or a business website.
| | 00:11 |
whatever it happens to be.
You can actually do that.
| | 00:14 |
If you go down here to Share.
You know?
| | 00:16 |
First go to the image that you want to
embed.
| | 00:19 |
And go down here to the Share Button.
And we seen this before.
| | 00:24 |
We've talked about on the socials.
And you can just grab the straight link to
| | 00:27 |
the page, but that's not what we're after,
we want some HTML code.
| | 00:32 |
Click on that, choose the size of the
image that you want embedded.
| | 00:37 |
500 pixels, 640 wide, 800 wide.
Whatever works best for you.
| | 00:42 |
We'll go with 640 right here.
And then Flickr will generate the code for you.
| | 00:49 |
So you just highlight it by clicking on
it.
| | 00:52 |
I just use the copy command.
So I'll just do keyboard Cmd+C and copy it.
| | 00:59 |
And now I have it on the clipboard and I
can go to my blog and embed that code.
| | 01:06 |
What's interesting about doing it that way
is that the image will show up on the HTML pages.
| | 01:14 |
If they click on the image, it will take
them, in this case right over to your
| | 01:18 |
Flickr page where they can get a closer
look at it.
| | 01:23 |
And they can use all the wonderful Flickr
tools to further enjoy the shot.
| | 01:28 |
So that's the Embed code.
And it's under Share.
| | 01:32 |
And it's great for sticking stuff on HTML
pages.
| | 01:35 |

ConclusionNext steps| 00:00 |
We've certainly covered a lot of ground in
Flickr.
| | 00:04 |
So, what now?
What's next?
| | 00:06 |
Well, a couple things I'd like to leave
you with.
| | 00:08 |
One is, I really want you to explore the
world of Flickr.
| | 00:12 |
And it can be exploring groups and finding
other photographers who have similar
| | 00:16 |
interests to yours, and joining those
groups and sharing photos, and looking at
| | 00:20 |
those photos.
Or it could be exploring Flickr even on a
| | 00:26 |
grander scale.
Where you use the Explore page, and you
| | 00:30 |
look at video, and analog images, and the
world map and just really find these great
| | 00:35 |
shots that inspire and educate you.
But really the most important thing is to
| | 00:42 |
upload your own work to Flickr, do it at a
level that you're most comfortable with.
| | 00:48 |
But get to those photos off your desktop
computer, and get them out into the world
| | 00:52 |
where other people can enjoy them and give
you feedback.
| | 00:57 |
And at the end of the day, I think that's
the part about Flickr that excites me the most.
