Information on how to learn Flash is prevalent, but it can be frustrating to understand how to make an entire working web site using this unique technology. Here's a course that cuts through the clutter and offers practical tools for creating a dynamic web site, even for first-time developers. In Creating a First Web Site with Flash CS4 Professional, veteran Flash instructor Paul Trani simplifies the process of integrating animation, video, audio, and user interactivity to create a site that is dynamic and appealing. The goal of this hands-on workshop is to teach web site-building skills for today’s demanding interactive industry. Exercise files accompany the course.
What to consider when designing your web site? Well, the first thing you want to consider is your information and make sure the hierarchy of information is perfectly clear. Often times, the logo or name of the site might be in the upper-left portion of the screen, which is a very important spot. We know everybody can see that spot and that's pretty much where the site goes. So we know we are here on John Doe's web site. He is a designer for hire. We can easily see the navigation and it flows right into the content.
So we need to make sure the information is perfectly clear and the site flows well. We also want to keep the text legible and the font consistent because we want to have consistency not only on this page but from page to page. So they know that they are on the same site when going from page to page. We also want to keep the body copy bite-sized. So we want to keep it tight. We know people usually scan pages and in essence, don't stay on a page for longer than 30 seconds. So that's why we want to keep our body copy short.
We also want to keep our navigation consistent and clear. You can see easily see that we have a navigation bar at the top. I know those four links are basically buttons. We want to clearly differentiate these as buttons because they are in a separate area, separate from the content below. Now the content below does have hyperlinks and we want to clearly differentiate hyperlinks from the text. This is often done with an underline and with a change of color. So you really want to keep the metaphor, since its own known throughout the web.
You also want to indicate what clicking a link will do. In this case, clicking a link will open up a PDF file. So if you keep all of these web design considerations in mind, you will be able to design not only a very well designed site but a site that's easy to use.
