Using frame keyboard shortcuts

Video: Using frame keyboard shortcuts

Whether you use Flash primarily for animation or for programming, knowing keyboard shortcuts for working with the frames can help you to work a lot faster. There are three F keys that use the shortcuts for frames. Those are F5, F6, and F7. By themselves these keyboard shortcuts insert frames. F5 inserts regular frames which you can see if I click frame 10 on my timeline and press F5, I have extended the timeline to frame 10, just for that layer.

Using frame keyboard shortcuts

Whether you use Flash primarily for animation or for programming, knowing keyboard shortcuts for working with the frames can help you to work a lot faster. There are three F keys that use the shortcuts for frames. Those are F5, F6, and F7. By themselves these keyboard shortcuts insert frames. F5 inserts regular frames which you can see if I click frame 10 on my timeline and press F5, I have extended the timeline to frame 10, just for that layer.

F6 creates a keyframe. So I can click frame 10 in the background layer and press F6 on my keyboard to create a keyframe there. That means I could change the artwork on that frame. F7 creates a blank keyframe, so I could select frame 10 on the button layer and press F7 on my keyboard to create a blank keyframe. Note that if you hold the Shift key on your keyboard when you press F5 or F6, you remove regular frames or keyframes.

So if I select the blank keyframe I have created on the frame 10 and press Shift+F6, that's the keyboard shortcut for Modify > Timeline > Clear Keyframe. So what that does is it takes a keyframe and converts it to a regular frame. To delete a frame altogether you press Shift+F5. So think of the Shift key as kind of the delete modifier key for when you are working with frames. So F5 is to insert a frame, Shift+f5 is to delete a frame, F6 and F7 are to insert keyframes and blank keyframes respectively, and Shift+F6 clears a keyframe, converting it to a regular frame.

So as you use the keyboard shortcuts F5, F6, and F7 to control your keyframes, you can speed up your workflow when you're creating animations or any type of application in Flash.
