In Flash Professional CS5 Essential Training, author Todd Perkins explains the fundamentals of Flash Professional CS5, the industry standard for creating animations and interactive applications for the web, desktop, and mobile devices. This course starts with the basics, such as using the drawing tools to create simple animations, and progresses to automating animation with tweens and adding interactivity with ActionScript. This course also covers how to add sound and video to projects, enhance realism with effects like easing, and publish a project to a variety of platforms. Exercise files are included.
When you are creating real-world projects in Flash, occasionally you are going to have to use a Flash Player earlier than Flash Player 9 so you won't be able to utilize ActionScript 3.0 or the Code Snippets panel. In this movie, we'll look at how to use ActionScript 2.0 to add some of the same functionality that you can add with the Code Snippets panel. First, you may want to change your application to publish to ActionScript 2.0. To do that, you can click the Edit button next to your publishing profile. Go to the Flash tab. Change the Script to ActionScript 2.0.
Instead of using the Code Snippets panel, you can use the Behaviors panel with ActionScript 2 to add the interactivity. So, let's say we wanted to make this button link to the Explore California website. So, I'll select the button on the Stage and then open up the Behaviors panel. That's under Window > Behaviors. In the Behaviors panel, click the Plus button, go to Web, and then click Go To Web Page. From there, enter the URL. So I'll type in explorecalifornia.org.
Then you can choose which browser window to open it in. _parent and _top are for use with frames. _self opens the site in same window and _blank opens the site in a new window. I'll leave _self checked and then click OK. That's it. I'll test the movie in the Flash Player and click on the button to launch the web site. There is the Explore California web site. So, just remember if you need to use ActionScript 2.0, use the Behaviors panel instead of the Code Snippets panel.
