In Flash Professional CS5 Essential Training, author Todd Perkins explains the fundamentals of Flash Professional CS5, the industry standard for creating animations and interactive applications for the web, desktop, and mobile devices. This course starts with the basics, such as using the drawing tools to create simple animations, and progresses to automating animation with tweens and adding interactivity with ActionScript. This course also covers how to add sound and video to projects, enhance realism with effects like easing, and publish a project to a variety of platforms. Exercise files are included.
Once you've designed your application and you're ready to export it to the web or to the desktop, you need to know how to publish your application. So in this chapter, we're going to talk about how to publish an application you've created in Flash. The first thing you need to understand is that a SWF file doesn't appear alone on the web. So you don't browse to MyFile.swf on a website, but rather a SWF file is embedded within an HTML file. You can do that embedding in Dreamweaver or another application, but you can also use Flash to create the HTML file for you.
To adjust your publish settings, go to File > Publish Settings, or you can use the Properties panel. In the Properties panel, you can click the Edit button next to Profile. This opens up the Publish Settings window. From there you can go to Formats. Just choose which file format you'd like to export to. The default is just Flash and HTML. Each time you check a box, you'll see the tab appear next to the Formats tab. In each tab, you can control the settings for that particular file type.
So if I click the Flash tab, I see settings for my SWF file and if I click the HTML tab, I see settings for the HTML file. Again, throughout this chapter, we'll look at how to publish Flash content. But for now, I just want you to take a way that you can access the Publish Settings window by clicking the Edit button in the Properties panel or by going to File > Publish Settings.
