In Flash Professional CS5 Essential Training, author Todd Perkins explains the fundamentals of Flash Professional CS5, the industry standard for creating animations and interactive applications for the web, desktop, and mobile devices. This course starts with the basics, such as using the drawing tools to create simple animations, and progresses to automating animation with tweens and adding interactivity with ActionScript. This course also covers how to add sound and video to projects, enhance realism with effects like easing, and publish a project to a variety of platforms. Exercise files are included.
Let's look at publishing an AIR application. On this Stage I will make sure everything is deselected and then I'll click Edit Adobe AIR 2 Settings in the Properties panel. Here I have the General tab. This shows general settings for my application. I see the output file name and the file name, the name and the app ID. So I'll change the file name to Two Trees Olive Oil. Same thing for the name, Two Trees Olive Oil.
For the App ID, I'll change that to com.lynda.twotreesoliveoil. I could put in a description and copyright information if I want as well. Then I need to add the included files. I added picking.flv, which is the name of the video file that plays in this application. You can add files by clicking the plus button. You will need to add any files that are loaded into your app. So things like video files and other files that are loaded in while your movie is playing.
In the Signature section, you will need to create a certificate. You can create your own certificate by clicking the New button and typing in the appropriate information. Remember, you will have to add a password to your file and then type that in here. So I'm going to type my password in for my file. Then I'll check Remember password for this session. That way if I need to go back to my publish settings, I don't have to type the password in each time. Now I'll move to icons. To add an icon, select the icon and then click the folder icon and browse to the file.
I recommend storing the icons in the same directory as your FLA file. So I'll check 16.png, go through the other icons, and select them. I actually created these icon settings in Flash, which you can learn about in Chapter 21. So for the 48, I'll choose the 48 image and for 128, I'll choose 128.png. In the Advanced setting you can control, well, advanced settings like the width and height of the window for your application and starting X and Y positions.
I'll just click OK and then will publish the file. So we will go to File > Publish. You will have to wait a few seconds while Flash publishes your file and once it's done, you'll find AIR file in the same folder as your FLA file. So you'll see here I have Olive_Oil.air. I can double-click the file to install it. You'll notice that it installs like any native application. Before you install it, you'll see this screen. Notice that it says the publisher is unknown and the publisher identity is unknown. The system access is unrestricted.
So it looks like this thing is going to do something malicious. But it doesn't have any malicious code inside of it and what is this basically saying is that this was created by a developer that did not have a licensed certificate. So if you want to really create a desktop application say for sale, then you should look into getting a certificate from a certificate authority. So I'll click Install and then I'll just install this to my applications folder and I'll check the box to start the application after installation. So I'll click Continue and here is the app.
So it says Two Trees Olive Oil here. It looks like a native application on my computer. You'll see Two Trees Olive Oil for the application name at the top of my screen and then if I look in the dock, you can see my little icon for the app. So I will click the buttons and you can see that the app works. The video also plays. (Music playing) So it works just like any native application. If you want to uninstall yours, you uninstall just like you uninstall any native application on your operating system.
So to publish your AIR file, you set everything up in Adobe AIR 2 settings window and then you just go to File > Publish to create the AIR file.
